    You are using bbPress, which handles its forum integration into BuddyPress.

    Your question would be better suited there – bbpress.org/forums/

    The BBP_Forums_Group_Extension issue is known and there is a fix.
    See this ticket and link to patch.

    Ok, so I thought I was either crazy or missing something simple, but this exact same thing is happening to me.

    I ‘promote’ a member to Moderator, their avatar shows up as “Group Mod” – however, they never realize the ability to delete content within that group (except their own, of course).

    Interestingly, after this ‘promotion’ their Forum role never changes from ‘participant’ in the WP users page, and their Site role stays at Subscriber. (not sure if that is normal behavior?)

    I have deactivated all the other plugins except bbpress and buddypress, and the required theme plugins. I have tried it on two different themes.

    If I promote the user to Group Admin, they do realize the delete privileges, but that’s not what I want to do as it includes other group edit functions.

    WP 4.1
    BP 2.2
    bbp 2.54

    Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

    @henrywright

    Ok, I can confirm the issue now.

    If a group is created as private and a forum is created with it- it will be a private forum and its activity will remain invisible to non group members.

    If a private group is created and an existed forum is added to it- this forum need to be changed to private- otherwise the forum will remain public, even though the group attached to it is private- and the activity of the forum will be public.

    Same goes for a public group+ forum , that is created together and later group setting are set to private. Forum remains public- forum’s activity -too.

    Is there something to be done with the buddypress-bbpress integration to make this work?
    Creating a function that will make a forum private too- if the group it was attached to becomes private? @johnjamesjacoby

    Oh, weird. I have no search plugin installed at all. I do have bbpress installed, though. Could that be it? Could it be related to my theme? I did just change that recently, too.

    Assuming it’s purely related to my theme, is there a search plugin you would recommend? Or am I doomed to get this error message forever?

    You could use this plugin: https://github.com/r-a-y/buddypress-usernames-only

    Which extends across to the bbPress side of a BuddyPress install. Note that by default, display names are enabled in the member header on profile pages. If you prefer usernames to be shown everywhere, add the following snippet to your wp-config.php file:

    define( 'BP_SHOW_DISPLAYNAME_ON_PROFILE', false );

    This is what I use. It blocks access to all the BP and bbPress components, but allows visitors to see the blog. I’m sure you could customize it to kill access to that too.

    When you attempt to access a page you shouldn’t be able to see, you are redirected back to the home page

    /**
     * Block public access to site with some exceptions.
     */
    function hwdsb_block_access() {
    	if ( is_user_logged_in() ) {
    		return;
    	}

    	$redirect = is_buddypress();

    	$site_path = bp_core_get_site_path();

    	// subdirectory install
    	if ( is_multisite() && ! is_subdomain_install() ) {
    		global $current_blog;
    		$site_path = $current_blog->path;
    	}

    	// strip site path from URI
    	$path = substr( esc_url( $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] ), strlen( $site_path ) );

    	if ( ! $redirect && function_exists( 'is_bbpress' ) ) {
    		$redirect = is_bbpress();
    	}

    	// redirect if we match a condition and we're not on the homepage
    	if ( (bool) $redirect === true && $path != '' ) {
    		bp_core_redirect( bp_core_get_root_domain() );
    		exit();
    	}

    }
    add_action( 'template_redirect', 'hwdsb_block_access', 0 );

    Extra info: I have permalinks set to default. With default permalinks, the posts work but the member profiles give 404. If i change the permalinks to something else the posts don’t work and the member profile pages don’t work either. Also it appears i have no registration page. Its like Buddypress doesn’t recognise any of the paths. I have created Registration and Activation pages and have set them at the settings. I had it working on a previous wordpress installation that was the same, but then after a fresh installation it stopped working.

    Interesting. Might be a theming issue. Kleo is built for buddypress and bbpress, but maybe an error.
    Will have to look into that side of things.

    Your best bet is to talk to NextGen. It’s probably a known issue. If you do, tell them what versions of WP, BP, bbPress and NextGen you have installed. Ditto re your theme.

    I think creating a user role with ‘forum-only’ capabilities is perhaps your best bet. Try asking over at the bbPress support forum. The guys over there are specialists when it comes to forums (bbPress) so you may find some more joy there.

    hi @lucdkny,

    if you’re comfortable with CSS and JS, you could try this.
    The important part is the JS and your own CSS rules
    And of course, you can check this forum source code, wich uses a customized bbpress template.

    Remove both the background colors.
    Change the text color to black.

    In In bb-base/style-buddypress.css:

    #bbpress-forums p.bbp-topic-meta .bbp-topic-started-in a {
    	/* background-color: #be3631; */
    }

    In bb-base/style.css:

    #bbpress-forums p.bbp-topic-meta .bbp-topic-started-in a {
    	color: #000000;
    	padding: 2px 5px;
    	border-radius: 3px;
    	font-size: 10px;
    	font-weight: bold;
    }

    Hey @skyrant, project lead chiming in here. Apologies for @ubernaut’s response; it doesn’t come across as very helpful or inviting, nor does it point you in any directions as to where to start building this type of functionality, which is the type of helpful reply I would expect from our forums normally.

    You’ll want to look into WordPress’s map_meta_cap filter, and more specifically, our bp_moderate capability checks.

    In the old days, we used a bunch of is_super_admin() checks to only allow the type of access you desire to network administrators. This proved to be too powerful an assumption once BuddyPress started working on Single-Site installations, and so we ported (almost) everything to checking for bp_moderate instead.

    You could create a new role and grant it the bp_moderate capability. In doing so, any user with that role will have the ability to moderate the entire BuddyPress community.

    This also is a bit more powerful than we would like it to be, and in the future we hope to introduce dedicated roles and capabilities all through-out BuddyPress very similarly to the way we did with bbPress. It’s not in the immediate roadmap however, so if this is an area you’re interested in, and want to help us improve it, let’s keep a dialogue going here and see if anyone else chimes in.
