In reply to: Ridiculously long usernames being generated
Tux Kapono
ParticipantThank Roger,
It took a month to get a response from the developer, thus me trying to figure it out in the meantime. Their answer:
“Yes, this is in fact because i’m generating a random username for users
(since we don’t want them to use it anyway.) But you can modify the code,
which is somewhere in the gantry framework – buddypress plugin folder, and
generate it from the display name or whatever. I just wanted to make sure
there were no invalid characters in it.”July 27, 2012 at 2:56 pm #138045frank tredici
MemberMainly to help anyone that looks here and tries to take away that `bp_core_signup_user` is the solution…well, it isn’t.
In my plugin I simply replaced:
`add_action(‘user_register’, ‘rebuildAuthUsers’); // rebuild the authorized user list anytime a new user is created through WordPress`with:
`add_action(‘bp_core_signup_user’, ‘rebuildAuthUsers’); // rebuild the authorized user list anytime a new user is created through BuddyPress`It did not intercept the registration process and launch my function.
Still digging…

MemberAwesome @aces…I think we are getting closer…Do you know where I insert
<img src="http://my.BuddyPress_site.com/wp-content/themes/my-theme/images/mystery-man.jpg" />?Do I place it all by itself in my
functions.php file? If I do (being a PHP coder) I know a stray html tag will show that image on every page. I need to somehow wrap it around ado_action()or andadd-action()or anadd-filter()or anadd_filters()— I believe, as I learn more about hooking in WordPress/BuddyPress.Thanks for guiding me on what to most out there is such a simple replacement to the out-of-the-box Mystery Man image graphic.

ParticipantThanks @djPaul
I also read another recent thread: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/bbpress-2-1-and-buddypress-1-6-beta-2/?#post-134036 and commented there. It seems likely that there are a few bugs to be sorted out to get this working.
A particular thing I had missed that might help someone else to get bbP2.1 forums working a bit at least with BP1.6RC1 is that, as well as diabling BP Group Fourms I had untick “Discussion Forums” in WP-admin> settings> buddypress> components (which I find counter-intuitive).

ParticipantThanks for your comments here @jeaz, @newpress and @PaulGibbs They really helped me out and confirmed that I wasn’t just being really stupid! Yes, I concur with you, I’m getting the same issues you raise above with WP 3.4.1, bbPress2.1 and BP1.6RC1
It’s looking like the new forums will be excellent and useful, so many thanks to all the developers. But at the moment the forum admin between BP and bbP has a some limiting bugs and is also confusing to me. I’d like to help out by testing but, for me at least, I feel that it is best to wait until the developers have another crack at the integration first.

That might just work out perfectly, however I do have a further gui integration question for you.
With a simple WP page you have a menu bar with items on it (pages, catagories, etc) Of course those can also have sub entries below them when you mouse over them.
If I go with a multisite i be able to have a menu entry on the main site thats, lets say; ‘Buddypress’ (for lack of a better example, and then on mouseover have drop down items for ‘groups’ ‘forum’ ‘activity’ ‘friends’ etc. and clicking them takes them to the appropiate spot on the subsite?
I’ve never seen a menu item that links to a page on a subsite. If this can be done, and I can find a coding example then that’ll work perfectly for my needs.
Thanks for your input, I’ll make sure to read up on those links tomorrow.edit: i just glanced through those pages and I have alot to read, are you aware of anyway to integrate stats across a network of WP sites onto the main one visable in the main dashboard?

MemberWhat about by changing your WP site to the multisite and activate BuddyPress on a sub site? In order to not appear as a separate site, you can set it as a sub directory rather than a subdomain.
WP Multisite:

ModeratorYou can add meta to updates and filter that way. Google “add meta BuddyPress activity” it’s been discussed before. You will need php skills for this customization

KeymasterIf this is pure bbPress question, you’re best to ask on bbpress.org, as that where those experts are. Or do you mean that you think BuddyPress is affecting bbPress’ log in process?

ParticipantDo you mean something like the walled garden technique?
I use (bp version 1.5.6 ): https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/code-snippet-make-site-privet-parse-error/#post-130982
Then I use the following to hide feeds from logged out users
`
function bp_remove_feeds() {
remove_action( ‘bp_actions’, ‘bp_activity_action_sitewide_feed’, 3 );
remove_action( ‘bp_actions’, ‘bp_activity_action_personal_feed’, 3 );
remove_action( ‘bp_actions’, ‘bp_activity_action_friends_feed’, 3 );
remove_action( ‘bp_actions’, ‘bp_activity_action_my_groups_feed’, 3 );
remove_action( ‘bp_actions’, ‘bp_activity_action_mentions_feed’, 3 );
remove_action( ‘bp_actions’, ‘bp_activity_action_favorites_feed’, 3 );
remove_action( ‘groups_action_group_feed’, ‘groups_action_group_feed’, 3 );
}
add_action(‘init’, ‘bp_remove_feeds’);

Member@aces. I am looking through your response. Where do I define the location of my Mystery Man graphic inside your code solution?
I have it located at `../wp-content/themes/my-theme/images/mystery-man.jpg`

ParticipantIt’s not quite the same thing but with bp version 1.5.6, I use the following in bp-custom.php:
// see: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/1-5-group-avatars-using-mystery-man-default#post-109448 function my_avatar_defaults() { global $bp; // change 'identicon' to anything listed here: // http://en.gravatar.com/site/implement/images/#default-image $bp->grav_default->group = 'identicon'; $bp->grav_default->user = 'monsterid'; } add_action( 'bp_init', 'my_avatar_defaults' );July 26, 2012 at 8:33 pm #138010Toby Cryns (@themightymo)
Participant@mercime – We are using group forums. We are, however, rewriting the urls using the forum slug constant in wp-config.php.
It is weird, because this is only happening on our DEV environment. It seems to be working fine on LIVE.
Any other thoughts? Possible avenues to explore?

@mercime
Participant@dreamlarp basic troubleshooting is changing to bp-default theme. I suggest that you double-check that all the BP components are in working order using bp-default theme before installing/activating a third-party theme.
Could also be a plugin issue, one that has not been updated for latest BP version. There are a variety of factors which could trip up a smooth installation. First thing is change to bp-default theme and work from there.

Participant@beggers best place to ask is at the WordPress.org forums and to search plugins there. There was a plugin that “bridged” the two (WP/phpBB) way back.
Right now I see the following

– https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/phpbb-recent-topics/
– https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tags/phpbb -
