    == What I need is all the instructions, and they need to be correct, or I’ll have to look for another solution because BuddyPress is not the one for me or the website I’m working on. ==

    @wendy-cockcroft we are all volunteers here trying to help others. We understand if you want to look for another solution which requires less technical know-how or something which does not require you to have the willingness to learn new skills. Check out WP Symposium or Mingle plugins.

    == Please be aware that when you go WP Multi-Network and then go BP MultiNetwork, you would be expected to know or to learn how to make some changes in database ==

    @mercime Sorry I did not notice that in the documentation. I am in the process of having some custom development work done on the site so paying for professional help is not a problem.

    BP Multi Network is a very specialized, somewhat complex plugin that is probably only supportable by the developers. I wonder if @wpmuguru or @johnjamesjacoby would be willing to provide support?

    @elangley Please be aware that when you go WP Multi-Network and then go BP MultiNetwork, you would be expected to know or to learn how to make some changes in database. At this point, you might need to hire a developer. But if you’re game to proceed on your own, please remember to backup your database and server files before going through these processes which require more technical expertise than basic installations. That way, you could revert to previous installation if something goes awry.

    Confirmed that the two plugins have broken layouts in IE. You’d have to bring this to the attention of the plugin developers. Note however, that these two plugins have not been updated since mid-2011

    The installations instructions are not very clear for BP Multi Network, for instance,
    deactivate BuddyPress on your sub network(s).
    Edit your database and remove the bp- settings for the subnetwork from wp_sitemeta and wp_X_options where X is the blog ID of the main site in your sub network.

    Edit your database? Not sure I would know what to do there…

    Problem with this is that each BuddyPress site is different. Such a guide would be almost useless.

    @mercime thanks for the response. To answer your questions:

    WP version = 3.3.2
    BP version = 1.5.5

    Hosted w/Hostgator

    I went through the Installation Wizard, step-by-step and confirmed everything. I performed and confirmed each step several times.

    Site URL: boostego

    WP Theme = Themefuse: Sportedge

    I did not install and activate the BP Template Pack plugin to make the theme compative with BuddyPress. I’m not sure of what the steps would be to “fix the HTML structure of the BP template files”. Could you please elaborate? TIA..

    When searching these files, i cant find the exact code you wrote. for instance in activity, i found

    `

    <div id="post-” >

    `

    instead of

    `

    `

    so I think i’m still lost here….?

    #134890

    Thanks, Hugo, but this is what the problem is; I want to do a thing I never have a problem with anywhere except with BuddyPress and it’s a simple thing I want to do.

    Since I understood precisely ZERO amount of your post I can’t do anything with that information. This is the problem with BuddyPress: if you’re not a coder, you’re screwed.

    Is it not possible at all to give me instructions I can understand or provide me with code I can copy and paste into the appropriate files? The advice I took was from this website. I followed them to the letter. I copied and pasted the code. The website is a disaster.

    What I need is either clear instructions that I understand and can immediately implement or code that I can copy and paste. I also need to be told *where* the code needs to go and whether or not anything else needs to be in that particular file. I’m a noob. I know that. But I’m a noob that wants to learn and I can’t learn when I’m a) confused and b) frustrated.

    I have either received a) half of the instructions I needed to do this or b) the wrong instructions from the beginning.

    What I need is all the instructions, and they need to be correct, or I’ll have to look for another solution because BuddyPress is not the one for me or the website I’m working on.

    Hi again Paul,

    I noticed that you’re not able to sign up with usernames such as “activity”, “groups” or “members”. It seems like BuddyPress stops users from being able to do this to stop any conflicts. I’d pretty much only need to add “about”, “login”, “terms” and “contact” to the list of ‘outlawed’ usernames as these are the only pages I need on my site right now.

    Hope you can help.

    Wendy BuddyPress customization isn’t for beginners you do need a degree of dev experience definitely a basic understanding of PHP / CSS/ and markup.

    In reference to the header I thought that was sorted out in the other thread? In which case it oughtn’t to be raised again as it’s a bit misleading, if however it is still an issue post back on the other thread.

    I noted that your child custom themes functions file had the BP enqueue function along with it’s wrapper function:

    `<?php
    if ( !function_exists( ‘bp_dtheme_enqueue_styles’ ) ) :
    function bp_dtheme_enqueue_styles() {}
    endif;
    ?>
    `

    That doesn’t look right, I would remove that unless the child theme actually handles loading styles somewhere else as this will prevent BP loading any styles – which may be the intention, mercime may be able to confirm that this is correct.

    As for the headers sent error this may be due to having white space in the file after php tags are closed, that is after the final ‘?>’ you might have an actual carriage return which acts as actual parsed data if that’s so it needs to be backspaced out.

    @Hugo I don’t think @kramugs was being particularly helpful.

    @kramugs I’ve deleted that link, could you briefly explain what you think the solution is and then how the link helps – as it stood the link looked to have no relation to the topic in hand especially given the query appended ‘?=african mango’

    #134881

    Thanks, Mercime. After that, what can I do to fix whatever is causing the problems? So far I’ve found BuddyPress to be a profoundly frustrating experience because the instructions for customizing the theme are too vague to follow correctly.

    All I want to do is add a header banner that doesn’t repeat and make sure the registration page works as intended. How can I do that? When I followed the instructions given me, I ended up with a mess.

    I’ve had to revert to the default for now. Is it really that hard to a) add a new header image at 401 x 80px and set it to *not* repeat?

    Oh and I can’t open a development tracker ticket because the link above this post (https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/newticket/) gives me this page:

    @mercime,

    In my initial testing I was having trouble getting BP Multi Network, the name of the plugin you are referring to, to work. I will start from scratch again and run some more tests though..

    Sorry, I was doing work on my site and took the BP theme down. It’s back up. Tried removing Buddypress and reinstalling it, but it still recognizes all of the old settings. Here’s my forum page: http://www.mrhensler.com/forums/ Clicking on any of the forums yields nothing.

    Got it!
    go to yoursite.com/wp-admin/admin.php?page=bp-page-settings (Or buddypress-> Pages in CMS)
    There you will see an option of creating a new page for Registration…
    just click on it and you will be sorted..
    Thanks

    I wasnt trying to delete anything apart from pages within wordpress I wasnt using. I had originally installed a shopping plugin but the pages still stayed on and I thought I was deleting the registration page for that but it was for the buddy press theme.

    I never went into my FTP and deleted any files only deleted the page from wordpress back office.

    Now I get a message saying that The following active BuddyPress Components do not have associated WordPress Pages: Search Page, Register. Repair

    When I got to the buddy press page to repair it I cant?

    just download buddypress in your Hard Drive and upload (ONLY) registration.php
    nothing to re-install again!

    Thank you for your prompt response! I appreciate it. The only problem I have with my site is that it looks fine in all browsers but the internet explorer?! I have installed BuddyPress Sliding Login Panel and BuddyPress Activity Stream Bar plugins which everything looks nice and fine in any other browsers except in internet explorer in which both plugins expand vertically instead of horizontally as it should be. Therefore, my site looks very strange with the two plugins stretch out both at the top and bottom, so they cover the whole page?!

    I have now created a test user, so you could login and investigate the issue for me which is:

    Username: test
    Password: 789456

    Thank you for your help,

    If you only have one group, then you can just hardcode the group name in the member-header.php file. Copy over this file from bp-default theme https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/browser/tags/1.5.5/bp-themes/bp-default/members/single/member-header.php into your theme i.e., wp-content/themes/YourThemeFolder/members/single/member-header.php

    Open up member-header.php file and right beside
    `<a href="”>` , add `(Microsoft)` for example

    @marcacer Here’s a tutorial from Dennis Smolek to get you started for fields during group creation – https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/how-to-edit-group-meta-tutorial/

    or, if you can wait until after the group is created – https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-groups-extras/
