ModeratorIt’s not an easy fix. You need various plugins to block spam but as stated above people are earning pennies to sign up to blogs. Best defense is a strong offense. Do as much as you can. Spam is a fact of life when running social sites.
Install my BuddyPress verified plugin and you can easily manage your spam accounts. I’m adding a feature in the next update that will deactivate an account automatically if that account posts too much if they are too new.
Core BP committer Paul is adding askimet filtering to the activity stream. Everyone knows spam is an issue and it’s being dealt with as best it can.

ParticipantI have tried everything A to Z to stop spam registration. They all work for a while, but as the site grows it is overwhelmed. I think David100351 is correct people fill out the registration and hand it to bot drones. If anyone has successfully got this under control for a big site let me know as it makes it more work than it is worth.
WordPress is brilliant with anti-spam but have not had the same results with Buddypress. I am thankful for all the work people have done with BuddyPress and know they will say it is an MU problem, but I just want to use BuddyPress without spending so much time fighting spam. Anyone else tried wangguard?December 15, 2011 at 8:26 pm #126420In reply to: Auto generating blank member profiles

MemberYou may also want to look into a plugin that will allow you to use the same e-mail address all accounts, unless you really want to create either 1). 300 E-Mail Accounts or 2). 300 Forwards.
You can check the plugin below out. It should suite your needs.

I almost have it down, but I’m still working on it. I am developing it as a plugin of sorts, though I never planned on releasing it, so it’s not entirely compatible all around. I can send you both what I’ve got so far and I’d love to collaborate with either of you to turn this into a real plugin.Basically, I set up a value for groups to see if the group should be moderated, then if they are moderated all new posts get the meta value of pending. I then filter the activity stream to exclude activities which have that meta value, unless it’s an admin, in which case they get a link to approve it.
All is pretty well, though I’m still struggling with filtering the activity in the most efficient way. You can download what I’m working on here: http://pastebin.com/239ZjLLq. You can also add this to style posts that need to be moderated.
`.activity-list li.pending {
background-color: #FF9;
}
.activity-list li.pending .moderation {
float: right;
}`Remember, it’s a work in progress and may not work out of the box on your install. I’ll answer any questions if I can though. Like I said, I’d really like to collaborate and make this a useful plugin.

MemberI’m coming across the same barrier… Pulling the group image at different sizes is fine, however when you try and modify the group avatar size from the group admin perspective, it get’s a bit tricky. Try and upload and small icon for a group and you will notice it puts the little logo on a black background and resizes it akwardly.
Looking for something to hook onto to modify this setting and I can’t see anything pertaining to size in the BP template set
`
<input type="submit" name="upload" id="upload" value="” />
‘delete_group_avatar’, ‘component’ => ‘groups’, ‘wrapper_id’ => ‘delete-group-avatar-button’, ‘link_class’ => ‘edit’, ‘link_href’ => bp_get_group_avatar_delete_link(), ‘link_title’ => __( ‘Delete Avatar’, ‘buddypress’ ), ‘link_text’ => __( ‘Delete Avatar’, ‘buddypress’ ) ) ); ?>
<img src="” id=”avatar-to-crop” class=”avatar” alt=”” />
<img src="” id=”avatar-crop-preview” class=”avatar” alt=”” /><input type="submit" name="avatar-crop-submit" id="avatar-crop-submit" value="” />
<input type="hidden" name="image_src" id="image_src" value="” />
`
Any thoughts on how to modify size, right from the upload process?

ParticipantGood. See if you have the bb-config.php you should have at the root of your WP install and check if necessary DB information is correct in bb-config.php

I know it’s a feature, but my current admin doesn’t have buddypress support… Wouldn’t that be a topic here?
