If you create a hidden group, only group admin and invited members of the group can access these pages.April 2, 2011 at 7:15 pm #109393In reply to: A global forum?
@mercime
Participant== I prefer keep local forums with the global fourm running along. ==
Actually, @sbrajesh‘s Global Forums plugin can either integrate the groups forums or run separate from the group forums.

If you don’t need to install BuddyPress and make sure it works for all WP and BP upgrades including BP plugins, then you can stay in that setup.
If you do want BP in your setup, backup database and server files and save to hard drive then reverse the process you went through “giving WP it’s own directory”, you can then reinstall WP at domain root.

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘}’ in xxx/public_html/wp-content/plugins/bp-custom.php on line 9
Make sure it has been wrapped around “ at the beginning and the end.
But I want it to display their usernames instead of their RealNames.
Use this plugin: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-usernames-only/
April 2, 2011 at 3:36 pm #109375In reply to: Remove Groups
@mercime
ParticipantIf you are going to use an external forum software, then you can just go to dashboard > BuddyPress > Component Set up > Groups – Disabled. Note that if you go this route, you would have to create a plugin to integrate your forum software with BuddyPress.
If you want to use the internal bbPress forum which you install via BuddyPress > Forums Setup , then you have to keep the groups enabled because the default forums are connected to groups. https://codex.buddypress.org/buddypress-site-administration/buddypress-forum/ In this scenario, you could rename and use Groups as the Main Forum sections like https://wordpress.org/support/ and adjust navigation in BP Admin Bar, Main Navigation and Item Navigation accordingly.

Participant<i> How can I make it so it displays the users by nicknames, not by their names?</i>
That is what Buddypress does currently. It displays their “RealName” rather than their Username across the site.
<i> how can I add Activity and Members links in the adminbar?</i>
Add this to your bp-custom.php:
function pages(){ ?> <li class="no-arrow"><a href="yoursite.com/activity">Activity</a> <li class="no-arrow"><a href="yoursite.com/groups/">Groups</a> <?php } add_action( 'bp_adminbar_menus', 'pages', 15 );April 2, 2011 at 1:22 pm #109367In reply to: From Latin1 to UFT8 – Issues

Participantthanks for reply,
even if I would find necessary octals for my language, it still would not solve my issue, since biggest problem is updates and, of course, I can not ask my users to use octals in their updates.at the moment they will have to refresh page after every update, maybe some other solutions?
can plugin “RS activity refresh…” solve this issue?
maybe I should completely switch off javascripts for updates?April 2, 2011 at 11:27 am #109365In reply to: [Resolved] Speeding up buddypress

Participantok, good to know.
So exactly what does database caching do? I know it sounds obvious, but what things are cached and what is left purely dynamic? Is it only for logged in or out users? Or both?
Sorry for being vague, but again, it would be great if there was a definitive doc on this (being WT3 and BP).
April 2, 2011 at 8:58 am #109355In reply to: Can you multi-site BuddyPress?
nsbp001
ParticipantI am interested in this thread. I would like to have 3 BP networks with three separate brands and three separate URLs, but them all using the same database. That is, a user signed up in site3 can see, group with, friend, email, etc a user in site 1 seamlessly.
So site1 would be subdomain.domain1.org and typing in that URL gets you to a page where you see a a theme and branding specific to domain1.org. Site2 would be domain2.org and likewise going to that site you would see a theme and branding specific to domain2.org, and likewise for site3.
The independent branding is important, but the ability to have cross site networking is important as well.
On solution I thought of is the following:
Set up BP network with users subdomain.domain1.org/domain2 and subdomain.domain1.org/domain3. Then use the Domain Mapping plugin to map domain2.org to subdomain.domain1.org/domain2 and domain3.org to subdomain.domain2.org/domain3.
Then I would want to continue to be able to make new users like domain2.org/names and domain3.org/names.
Or is this all possible using the Multi-domains plugin?

JamieWade
Member@mercime Yes I was talking to PCWriter about this issue. The strange thing is, the admin bar displayed once the site was firts set up, and was there for about a week then it went? I used Softaculous on cPanel to install WordPress to my site, then I downloaded the BuddyPress plug in from the WordPress admin. Here is the website in question.

Keymaster@nexla Sorry, I honestly am not sure what it is that you’re trying to say. Unless I am totally losing it, you started this topic in regards to the BuddyPress global constant in the title. I provided a solution to that in BuddyPress trunk and a screen shot of it in the works. Is there something I’m misunderstanding?

ParticipantI mistakenly posted above, we are using “database” caching. Object caching did not work for us and caused many problems with others seeing other users names appear when viewing private messages as well as other object cache related issues.

Participant== Now buddypress won’t work, its driving me insane ==
The last time I tested https://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory a year ago and installed BP, it just didn’t work. Since you just created your site, why not start from scratch and install WordPress in domain root?

Participant== I added the extra bit still no joy ==
Hmm, I know the code works. I assume you revised the whole wp_nav_menu code in your functions.php with the whole code I posted above.
– Post content of your footer.php here.
– Did you create a new menu in Appearance > Menus – Choose Footer Menu from Theme Locations and clicked on Save after creating the links?== if you click that you will get a 404 error, ==
– Deactivate all plugins except BuddyPress then re-run Settings > Permalinks – Save.

1. Create a child theme of bp-default theme – then style it to taste

@redsavior Buddypress docs is a whole differente deal, adds wiki-like functionality to BP
