MemberI came to this thread and read all the way through hoping I would see the answer at the end of the rainbow. eborg9 totally has a point and boy he sure had to work to make it. eborg9, I feel your pain.
Case in point, I am using BuddyPress for an alumni group. They won’t know what to do with a username other than use it login (would be nice if they just used their email addresses). Usernames are displayed all through my BuddyPress site and there is no way to turn that off. This is counter intuitive for my audience. In fact, for my site they need to see each other SITEWIDE by “first name + last name in school” (aka: maiden names for women). This shouldn’t be so difficult. I’m surprised there isn’t a plugin to modify the Sign Up form and to edit the profile output. I would pay for such a plugin and I know others would. Does one exist that is for sale? I don’t expect to find one for free.
My site members shouldn’t have to navigate to a members directory and do detective work to figure out to discover another members identity if they belong to an open community established so they can communicate.

Participant@Ishimwe Do you think asking for help is something wrong ?
Yes you may argue here that i used a wrong way but can you get the scenario here. I posted that kind of Language after 3months !!!
Ok second fact you said i should appreciate others’ efforts ( others should include both Buddy press developers and its users) … but you are considering only one side here .Lets for time being say i am a nerd i don’t have any knowledge about PHP or rather any kind of programming and what CMS are build for ? to simply solutions for non programmers. So what i am appreciating here is ‘ TIME & Energy ‘ of people who are not as good as you in programming so i am telling them there are these kind of problems in this system instead of getting to know about it after putting your time and energy look if you can solve them and then only decide to use this CMS . .. whats wrong with that approach ??Again if the solution provided by you solves the problem as i have not tested it but if it does then don’t you think my this post which is actually all over Google if you search anything even close to buddy press will help buddy press users ( both new and present ) who are facing same problem ?So my coming here to vent about buddy press is actually going to help people than otherwise i guess !!

ParticipantFor the most part. You’d have to mention specific features and functions to know whether it matches all of the features you’re thinking of or not. There have been many people who have moved their ning network over to BuddyPress. Although, it depends on which features of Ning you think are important.
The BP Media plugin should cover most of the photo and video needs, but you’ll have to check it out to see if it has everything you want.

ParticipantJeff, what’s the solution then? Or how do we prevent this in the future? I read the ticket, but I’m at a loss. I’m encountering this problem right now, and I had to go into phpmyadmin to correct all the user_nicename fields to remove the -2 at the end. do we simply ask people not to put spaces in their usernames?

Participant@junebob I agree it’s unfortunate, but this isn’t an error on other BP intalls. Just BP.org. Not to mention that most BP installs don’t have a million users the way BP.org does. I’m sure boone will eventually fix this too on BP.org.

MemberI just installed BuddyPress 1.2.6, and the plugin states that it is compatible to 1.2.4. Will it still work, and if not, what must I modify ? Also, do I need to have bbpress plugin installed also ? That is not mentioned in the readme.

MemberSo, looking through the forums, it appears you guys have been trying to find a solution for over 2 months for this. Is it really that complex? I can’t imagine any other bug that could be worse on buddypress, considering uploading an avatar is one of the first things new members do, and many people don’t like using external apps like gravatar.
It doesn’t really give a good first impression of buddypress.November 15, 2010 at 11:07 am #98276In reply to: wp 2.9.1 + 1.2.rc3 install – missing stylesheet

ParticipantContinuing from this thread: need-to-display-real-names
This thread might provide you with useful background on user names: Is-it-possible-to-create-a-community-where-people-can-use-thier-real-names
There already exists the ability to set and use ‘Display Names’ is that not sufficient for your requirements.
