    Found this bug tracker post: Ticket #2317 (closed defect: fixed) (https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/2317). It might not be fixed now. Has anyone experienced the same issue. My WP3.0 is network enabled.

    @alanchrishughes; That makes sense to me, and I think that’s the way social networking will go soon, though it’s in its infancy right now. I think the very concepts of ‘forums’, ‘groups’, ‘blogs’ and so-on will merge, and fade into history soon enough.

    I like the information filtering provided for user in the activity streams. For example, ‘All Members’ shows all activity, while ‘My Friends’ or ‘My Groups’ shows only what has been posted by friends, or in groups you belong to. That’s simple enough for almost anyone to grasp, and easy to use. When that sort of thing is extended into “What sort of information do you want to see, and how do you want to see it?” we’ll be making further progress. Currently, something like a forum is not easy for most people to grasp and use, and very restrictive for developers.

    @nuprn1 Most of my plugins will have that issue, so they will need an update for 1.2.5 also. :sigh: haha

    @erich73 Fixed thanks

    @hnla @jeffsayre almost had me hunting giraffes. That would have been bad because they’re too cute to hunt. :)

    @peterverkooijen said; “There is also zero privacy/security in Buddypress”. Care to expand upon that Peter? Our site isn’t ‘open for business’ yet, but when it is our members will expect some privacy, ie., profile stuff set to private and private group posts actually being private. Are you saying it can’t/won’t be properly private?

    Actually, it is possible to do this kind of verification. There’s just no UI for it.

    Look in buddypress/bp-xprofile/bp-xprofile-classes.php, method BP_XProfile_ProfileData::save(). There is an action hook ‘xprofile_data_before_save’ that happens (you guessed it) before the save. You could hook a custom filtering function to this action and validate your data that way.

    Welp… this morning, I attempted to remove this plugin via the admin panel but I started getting the “some files appear to be missing or out of place” error again so I went into my FTP and deleted all the W3TC files that weren’t automatically removed and I got my admin panel back, but my site’s front-end was displaying a blank white screen. So I wound up restoring yesterday’s backup after all. If anyone has any idea as to what caused this issue, I sure would like to know your thoughts on the matter.

    No, they’re not possible. Xprofile is an underdeveloped mess with low priority in the roadmap. There is also zero privacy/security in Buddypress, so storing social security numbers is asking for trouble.

    I did that but I still cannot go to and add menus.

    What I did;

    1.open up functions.php file and add
    add_theme_support( ‘menus’ );

    2. replaced
    “ul id=”nav”
    With

    ?php wp_nav_menu( array( ‘sort_column’ => ‘menu_order’, ‘container_class’ => ‘menu-header’ ) ); ?

    and I still can not add menus.
    where did I go wrong?

    Would love to see a quick example :)

    😆 Fixed zebras. Don’t ask.

    I think a thanks is in order to JohnJames for sterling and grueling work in getting 1.2.5 ready and for facing down that rabid pack of zebras

    Initially, and I would be surprised if anyone has yet to really take the plunge, one has to take the child theme route as trying to code presentational files from scratch with apps such as this would defeat even the best frontender, naturally one starts with the existing default theme folder structure, there’s nothing wrong with it and it’s how BP works, however with that copied over most of us with any experience are going to start very heavilly changing the markup (that is not critism of bp-default, which aint half bad )

    There has to be a point where theme files do not suffer any changes, not that is in terms of hooks, functions, variables etc, the odd class not a huge problem as this is really not a core issue but a presentational frontend matter, and if I do not pick that change up no matter I deal with something like that my self or simply pass it by, look at the default theme in passing and realise it’s got a cool feature I lack :)

    It’s a point better perhaps discussed at the dev chat? I raised an agenda topic along thses line as I know from experience if aspects like this are ignored for too long they never get dealt with – yes we have all written comments such /* ought to be improved */ or /* stop gap until better method found*/ and /* ought to be moved to…*/ I still come across them in work I and collegues have written and wince . In BP core files there are comments along the lines of /* must remove markup */ and indeed there is too much markup dotted around core files.

    @nuprn1 thanks I’ll take a look at winmerge, sort of feel I’m missing a better way of using SVN but as I’ve said it’s been a while since I’ve used it and Tortoise and trying to get my head around it’s confusing series of commands is a lot of trial and error – no I’m I’m not about to rtfm :)

    That’s coming next, or have at it yourself if you’d like. First I need to get some coffee. :)

    @alanchrishughes; What we’ve done – and it’s making sense to a few testers so far – is to ditch the forums and just use groups. So people know, for example, that they can create a cycling group, or a business group, or a flower arranging group. They understand that they can post messages in their group, and invite others to join in, accept new members, etc., and also that if they want things in the group to remain only there then they can make it private.

    Apart from the varying negative reactions I see from people regarding forums and blogs, one of the things which puts people off with forums is the layout style. They don’t want to ‘go into’ a new area and then have to sub-navigate, as they frequently become lost and end up hitting the Home button and starting again. Or worse still, the browser’s Close button, because it’s just another minor stress in life they can do without. Seeing an activity stream, and then entering a group knowing that it’s much the same thing, but either publicly displayed or kept private, they can handle. (Funnily enough, one tester said today when looking at the activity stream, “This is a really great idea…a local forum”).

    Personally, I’m very much pulling away from all the “Oh how cool is this?!” side of technology, as you may notice from other posts I’ve made. It’s not because I’m ready for pipe and slippers yet, nor because I don’t like it all, but simply because those who are or become site and software developers are usually far removed from those they’re developing for, yet they don’t realise it. ‘Screen blindness’, perhaps. Developers are producing highly complex helicopters, while what most people really want are bog-standard 4-gear cars. Some are even happy with a horse and cart! (Afterthought; I guess the trick is to produce the complex helicopter, but make it so simple to fly that all you need is a steering wheel and 4 gears. I know; the analogy falls down hard if stretched further!)

    @johnjamesjacoby; I don’t suppose this is the place to report an issue, so I’ll make it a question. When creating a Group, the tags are lost and have to be re-input after the final step. Is this fixed?

    I completely agree with you about trying to simplify terminology and usage for non-techies, that is exactly why I dislike this groups concept. The irony of what you just explained about how people don’t understand forums and how they are a bad idea, is that buddypress still uses forums and the word forum itself, buddypress even goes one step further and adds another arbitrary layer of confusion called groups over top of the forums.

    I agree people are more familiar with the word and concept of groups, but when they are groups of things they don’t understand, it is not helping anything. If this were my project I would start at the highest level with a “Talk” or “Discussion” or even the old “Message Board” section and then inside of that create groups to divide and organize the individual conversations/threads going on inside each group.

    FWIW – winmerge is a great tool if you have to update a custom theme/etc. (Guiffy is not bad either)

    Thanks for the documentation, JJJ. Maybe this could be a new page on the Codex?

    Changes to bp-default won’t happen very often, and if your theme is a child of bp-default, then you inherit these changes automatically. If not, then it’s your choice to adopt these changes or not.

    I get what you’re saying, and it’s a valid concern. The ‘zebra’ class was added only because the JavaScript that was doing the striping was striping things all over the place that it shouldn’t have been. The only way to get it to stop reliably was to tell it exactly which tables it should stripe, hence the zebra class was born.

    If you have problems or questions about it, ask them here or in IRC and I’ll try to help.
