ParticipantI think we agree, then, for the first time ever: that Andy &co should be focussing on fixing problems (usability and otherwise) and the dev community can extend core where they like.

ParticipantBtw, I really didn’t mean to dig on *anyone* –> I think WP and BP is BRILL, to say the least, but I do get frustrated @ how spammy it all can be. THAT SAID, I should just keep my mouth shut from here on out (ha), since I’m not really contributing to the solution.
SO.
@foxly I still need to read through all your suggestions, but the few I did read seemed spot on.
I do think it’s important to note: this thread becomes documentation for would-be spammers. Sad to say, as @andrea_r has noted many a time, when it’s documented, the evil-doers will read it and then find a way around. So how does your solution work in spite of the documentation herein? Or do we need to take some of this offline, into a more hushed conversation, i.e., email (gasp!) or some other less porous document? Google docs?
May 10, 2010 at 2:50 am #77414In reply to: I don’t know where to ask this question O_O
@mercime
ParticipantYou should ask this question in the Alpha/Beta forum https://wordpress.org/support/forum/12
@Andrea_r has posted relevant info about setting up a Network in WP 3.0
https://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network
Note : Subdomains work by using wildcard subdomains. You must have this enabled in Apache, and you must also add a wildcard subdomain to your DNS records. Some hosts will not support this, so you may need to ask your webhost before enabling this feature.
Which means you do not and should not add the subdomain physically to your server. The subdomains generated by WPMU and WP 3.0 are virtual subdomains.May 10, 2010 at 2:23 am #77413peterverkooijen
Participant@stwc (“My great worry these days is that the dev community is being compelled to fix problems with usability of core BP, as much or more so than extending what’s there.”)
That is my hope. Don’t extend. Fix problems first.

ParticipantHeh. I’m not disagreeing with you in principle, but taken in the context of Buddypress itself, that’s pretty ironic, with forum comments (and everything else) showing up in Activity streams as well as where they were originally posted.

(and in this specific case, it shows up inline, thread-indented on the Activity item and indentically inline, thread-indented on the forum comment itself, and that’s pretty intuitive — may not be best-practices UX, but I’d say it’s better than the default scenario. My great worry these days is that the dev community is being compelled to fix problems with usability of core BP, as much or more so than extending what’s there.)

ParticipantHello, I am having the same problem – WP 2.9.2, BP 1.2.3, BP Default Theme, BP Widget Theme, BP Columns Theme. I discovered the issue, completely uninstalled everything, fresh install of just BP and the themes, and none of the links in My Account or Notifications drop-down work.
1. Which version of WP/MU are you running? WP 2.9.2
2. Did you install WP/MU as a directory or subdomain install? directory
3. If a directory install, is it in root or in a subdirectory? root
4. Did you upgraded from a previous version of WP/MU? If so, from which version? No. Fresh, clean install
5. Was WP/MU functioning properly before installing/upgrading BuddyPress (BP)? e.g. permalinks, creating a new post, commenting. Yes.
6. Which version of BP are you running? 1.2.3
7. Did you upgrade from a previous version of BP? If so, from which version? No. Fresh, clean install
8. Do you have any plugins other than BuddyPress installed and activated? No.
9. Are you using the standard BuddyPress themes or customized themes? Standard BP
10. Have you modified the core files in any way? No
11. Do you have any custom functions in bp-custom.php? No
12. If running bbPress, which version? Or did your BuddyPress install come with a copy of bbPress built-in? Installed bbPress from within BP UI
13. Please provide a list of any errors in your server’s log files. Didn’t check.
14. Which company provides your hosting? HostmonsterMay 10, 2010 at 1:39 am #77409modemlooper
ModeratorIt made the forum replies go all weird. Anyhoo people should not be able to comment on something and it show up elsewhere, thats bad UX.

ParticipantYow, I this is a very satisfying thread. I’ve been so frustrated in the past by cursory deflections from long-time WP gurus (I won’t name names, ha), when it’s been clear for a long time that WP (and now BP) has very weak defenses, and yet seems to have the type of community that could build something very robust and strong. That being said, I have also thought that BuddyPress, by it’s linked nature, provides a greater threshold for working on this type of problem. To use a buzzword, it’s “synergy.”
I’m glad somebody has finally taken up the mantle.
(Sorry for ranting for a moment there, but it’s true!)

Participantthis should be a standard-feature at any website after all.
There are 2 Password-Boxes in BP, and I agree there should be also 2 e-mail-boxes so that the user gets his e-mail-address entered correctly. It would be even more important to have 2 “e-mail-boxes” than 2 Password-boxes at the Sign-up page.
Because the user is anyway able to change his password when he forgets about it.But having the user entering his e-mail-address wrong (like having a typo), then this user will never return to the website again.
Hope to see this implemented in BP.

ParticipantGood on you, foxly. There are a lot of significant problems with BP (made more apparent by the new design we’re using here on buddypress.org, which will, hopefully, mean that they are addressed more quickly), and it’s great to see someone from the dev community step up with substantive proposals to address one of the most glaring ones.

and throws in a different workflow for people to get used too
Don’t see how — it consolidates rather than adds, the way I’ve got it set up. *shrug*

MemberEhm, I am a non-developer (or developer to be) who loves WP and Buddypress, but can’t understand why there is no WYSIWYG (including the option to post pictures and embedding code to the forum posts). Did any of you get a chance to create a plugin, or code to add in some .php file to make this happen?
A forum without this is dull and as @gian-ava said, only usefull for ‘professional’ purposes. Please develop the fun part as soon as possible.

ParticipantIt’s a page… not a post. Not Buddypress content (not in Groups, Forums, Activity, etc). Just a simple Terms of Use static page that I would also like non-registered people to view.
