ParticipantI am running into the same problem. Does anyone have a possible solution or a plug-in that will fix this? My other wordpress sites on the same host work fine, so I am leaning toward a buddypress issue. Thanks in advance

MemberHey,
I’m now running WPMU (2.9.2) + Buddypress (1.2.2.1) after two updates. Before the update I was always able to upload avatars and my users, too.
Now uploading avatars is impossible. I cannot find the uploaded pictures. They are not in the directory of “wp-contents/blogs.dir/1/files/uploads”.
The folder of blogs.dir has 777-permissions and also safe-mode is turned off.
Any suggestions what the problem is?
Thanks in advance.
Greetings

ParticipantI do not know how OpenSSO flies with BP. I looked and sorry, my memory and reference are slightly outdated; “OpenSSO” the project has become OpenAM and lives on, here as of last month, per Oracle swallowing Sun, then spitting out OpenSSO the project but keeping OpenSSO the name (classic).
I have had and have seen BP running with LDAP and with SSO between BP and MediaWiki. Here obviously we have BP and “external” bbPress with SSO even if it does still have the “Help I can’t post! the first time” issue. I have not personally used a plugin to this effect, but @boonebgorges or someone else may have wrapped up the like.
As for “BP Federation” I suggest it be more than BP – BP, rather BP – WP. WP sites with no interest in running their own BP could affiliate, conjugate, federate with an umbrella BP.
True, a system running BP after WP 3 will be able to host sites but each will necessarily be limited in some regards v. independent WP sites, just as one is now limited by being a blog site within a MU. With BP Federation, my thought is WP sites could have their cake — being independent — and eat it, too — affiliate with a parent BP — without needing to run BP themselves. Is that like having cake, eating it, too, AND sharing some with a friend? OK now I want cake. BG

KeymasterEnsure your WP install is set to use the same timezone as your server. Test with a new message, not an old one, because in some areas the timestamps are cached and so won’t reflect any changes to the timezone (i.e. the Activity Stream is an easy example). If you still find an inconsistency, please report this as a bug on https://trac.buddypress.org/

ParticipantYes, yes. Federation Style.
OpenSSO integrated with WP seems to be a good start.
Do you know if that is working with BP as well?
Also BP-FB Connect and WP-FB-AutoConnect
could possibly be extended to BP-Connecting.
But the plugin I was thinking of, I can’t seem to find anymore.
It was meant for a dual sign on to BP + other platforms.
Anyone know it’s whereabouts?
I’m up for a federation.
Any ideas and collabs on this are welcome.

Participant“and share the users” … nig3d and Jeff, are you thinking along the lines of “BP – BP Connect” or “BP Federation” as in https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/bp-bp-connect ?
@Avatar Jeff, I’ve seen OpenSSO integrated with WP but which dual sign on plugin did you mean?

ParticipantOne of the users of my site also reported this error:
Warning: Variable passed to each() is not an array or object in /home/jewsbych/public_html/wp-content/plugins/forum-attachments-for-buddypress/forum-attachments-for-buddypress-bp-functions.php on line 461
Works like a charm otherwise.

ParticipantThere are many people who would gladly donate time and money to help Erwin with this. Not sure if you saw this, but Andy is about to make this much easier:
Andy Peatling (6 days ago): I’m working on a new version of this site that will automatically create a group for every new BuddyPress plugin that appears in the repo. This means plugins will get all the functionality of BP groups – a forum, activity stream, a list of members who are interested in the plugin, etc etc. I’m also going to add a donate page, which should help out a bit.
This has been held up a little right now because I’m trying to get the new upgrade/install wizard done first. This will allow BP to use WordPress pages instead of hacking with root components. It’s all bits of the jigsaw that need to be put in place before I can continue. Hopefully by the end of the month I should have at least the first iteration of the site close to completion.

Ultimately, this is Erwin’s baby, so he’s free to develop this at his own pace and according to his own specifications.

ParticipantWe are also thinking along the same lines.
There was a good discussion on this a while ago from Burt Adsit.
But I can’t seem to find it anymore.
Now there is discussion on duplicating group functions…

Participanton the /groups/index.php theme file a hook is above the item-list-tabs (subnav)
<?php do_action( 'bp_before_directory_groups_content' ) ?>seems easy enough tag something against the groupmeta and display a group or two on that hook.
*edit – this is on the Groups component page – not the forums directory.
if you need a forum index, i’m working in that feature right now

ParticipantI was thinking about this as well.
It would be good to look into the possibilities more.
Do you have links for what you had so far?
I was thinking if anything it may work with the dual sign on plugin.
Let me know your discoveries, perhaps we can collaborate to see if we can make this happen.

Participantyes, correct assessment, but there is a potential solution, if i am right. first about BP: the default theme used to be “widget” ready or friendly, meaning that you can decide what goes in there from the Widget Admin area. This latest version brings essentially major changes in the codes that organize user behavior, but not so easy on the theme side. In fact, there aren’t any themes, may be 2 or 3, that are BP1.2.2.1 compliant and easy to just deploy. However, the Buddypress creators and developers say that you have to create what they call a child theme and then make whatever changes you want from there, probably including making the first “Activity” page as your landing page. Now, one very smart developer released this base theme, http://freebpthemes.com/onsite/sense-sensibility/ If you have bandwidth, time and some technical capabilities, I would recommend having a look.
Now WordPress(MU) may allow u to pick your activity page as the landing page. In your WP Admin section, scroll down to the Settings area (left column). You see “Reading”. In it, it will let you choose “Front Page Display.” You may try to select “Static Page” and open the drop down menu for Front Page and select the Activity Stream page. Then save. By doing, I suspect, since I did not try it, the Activity Stream page (Facebook-like section) will be what your visitors will see when they hit your website.
One think you may want to consider. The Activity Page puts any acvity across your site on that page. If you have a lot of people, that could be overwhelming. There is, however, one plugin u should find on this site called: BuddyPress Friends Only Activity Stream. It essentially should show only activity from the memeber’s friends. Again, I did not try it, but I plan so.
Good luck

ParticipantI have the same problem. I only have the buddypress plugin installed.
Here is the funny thing: on a test site on my local machine everything installed and works perfectly.
On my web site is installed the same way I have the problem.
If you use firefox and firebug to inspect the code you will see there is a / missing from the img src line.
I have tried the buddypress default theme and a few more, same problem.
I have all the folders on my web site set to 777 to be sure there were no unreported writing errors.
the key lies in that line of code but I don’t know how to fix it.

MemberI also struggled trying to find a way to add groups. As it turned out, it was as simple as adding a blank page and naming it “Groups”.
I click “Groups” in my menu bar and BOOM, there it is. I am using the theme “Pressplay” at http://rlives.com. Maybe this will help another newbie like me!

ParticipantThere is a long way to go, but now that bbPress is tightly integrated in BP, forum support is emerging. Etiviti (rich!)’s new “Forum Extras” plugin that is a big leap toward bringing classic bbPress plugins into the BP environment, and it’s getting better every day. Forum attachments is another great plugin that brings a classic forum feature into the BP environment.
There are some core limitations of bbPress that will keep it from being as “powerful” as PHPBB, such as the ability to merge threads, but whether those features are critical or even desirable is open to debate. (Moderators love that feature but I am not sure users do.)
I hope it’s not true that forums are “minimized on purpose” around these parts, because what you have built is a perfect fit with forums. Forums are the heritage of web-based “social networking”, and there are a lot of important social interactions that still lend themselves quite well to the forum structure (such as this thread you are reading right now, for example).
Like that hybrid commercial on TV right now: Forums were social before Facebook even existed or YouTube uploaded its first video.
