ParticipantHave you tried deactivating BuddyPress, deleting the contents of the /wp-content/buddypress/ directory, and then reinstalling and reactivating?

ParticipantI’m searching around the forums and not seeing anything specifically related to my problem, but I’m thinking this has to be something simple. For whatever reason, after installing the new version of WPMU (2.8.5.2), it’s not recognizing any of the buddypress functions.
I’m quite befuddled.

ParticipantJust as an update, I activated the default buddypress theme, and all appears broken with my new buddypress install. It is giving me the same “call to undefined function” error regarding bp_page_title().
If anyone has any idea why this might be, I would greatly appreciate any advice. I tried to follow all instructions. I don’t think I have any “buddypress dependent” plugins installed, so I didn’t figure it would affect things that I deactivated buddypress first.
Any ideas why all the bp functions are suddenly not defined?

ParticipantIs the plugin you’re referring to this one?
http://premium.wpmudev.org/forums/topic/security-signup-question
If so, it states that it is not updated to the newest version of WPMU and that there are no plans on updating it. Also, again if this is the plugin with which you are having issues, then you will more than likely not get much support on the BP.org forums. Since this is a premium plugin, the developers of it should be doing the support. In other words, you are not going to have someone solve the issue here for free when someone else is making all the money.
If it is a free, GPL plugin you’re having issues with, please provide the link here. Also, contact the developer and make sure that it is compatible for use with BuddyPress in general and that it has been update to the BP 1.1.x series.

ParticipantMichael beat me to it. I think that’s a far better solution than duplicating the entire header.php file just to make one tiny change. Also, Google would give more weight to an h1 tag for your company name than an alt tag for your company name.

I’ve a new install hosted on H-Sphere. The site isn’t live yet but I have tried to install buddypress links but the problem persists after deactivating this. You’ve got me thinking though as I read something on a post about WPMU plugins with ‘-‘ in the name causing issues, maybe the .htaccess was modified. Can I copy and rename htaccess.dist?
Cheers

Participantyou can also use css to accomplish this like so for your h1#logo a element…
text-indent: -9999px;
background-image: url(http://blogs.nyu.edu/blogs/jr197/japan/Newsweek_logo.gif);
width: 335px;
height: 78px;
In this case, the text-indent will move your h1 title link -9999px out of view. The
second line calls your image logo as a background property; in this case, I just used
a Newsweek logo. The last two lines define the dimensions of your logo.

In case you haven’t discovered the documentation section (I hadn’t), there’s a great how to guide on building child themes:

Participant@ stwc: Thanks for the advice about child themes. Sound pretty easy…
I definately don’t think the system is flawed, far from it. Can just be a challenge when think you’ve got something, then it changes
(but no complaints!!)More so asked the question to help understand why the change was made.
Big thanks to everyone that takes the time to help out those that need it!!

ParticipantDoes your site work when using the default buddyPress theme? If so, you should contact the developer of the Shouty theme and ask when it will be upgraded to work with BP version 1.1.x.

ParticipantAre there any errors in your server’s error logs? Do you have any plugins activated besides BuddyPress? If so, deactivate them all and see if the issue resolves. Also, please continuing using the default theme as we troubleshoot this issue.

Although WPMU now tells me everything is installed and working I’m not able to register using the buddypress frontend. I found a reference in a forum suggesting that any plugins with ‘-‘ in their name can cause the error I’m seeing.
From my log:
Request exceeded the limit of 10 internal redirects due to probable configuration error. Use ‘LimitInternalRecursion’ to increase the limit if necessary.
I’m still getting this after deactivating buddypress-links though so may be more of a buddypress general support quesiton. Any ideas?

So, I guess we can assume that you are also on the same server as the OP which would mean that you have the exact same server log files. Of course not. Have you actually checked your server’s log files to see if there are any errors?
We spend a lot of time helping others so we expect people with issues to spend a little of their time providing us with details about their own, unique operating setup.

Jeff Sayre
ParticipantSome member profiles on my site are starting to become garbled …
The way you state the issue, you make it seem as if members’ profiles that were once correct are being changed into a “garbled” set of strings. However, if what you mean is that new registrants profiles appear as garbled strings, then I would assume it is spam as well.
First thing to do is upgrade to the latest WPMU and make sure you are using some form of anti-spam protection–Akismet, captchas, etc. Also, spammers many not be the only unwanted entities targeting your site. If you are not using the latest version of WPMU, then you are greatly exposing your site to attacks from more malicious parties who target older versions of WP, exploiting any recently-announced security issues in older version.
Next, you will want to upgrade BuddyPress to the latest version. Once you’ve done that, you will need to update your theme to work with BuddyPress. you can either do that yourself or contact the designer of your theme to find out if the theme you are using works with BP 1.1.2.

ParticipantHi and thanks for the Answer!
The volonteers are working in different cultural institutions. E.g. schools, Goethe Institut, german broadcasting, museums,…
I search for a way, that it is possible to seperate e.g. the users. So for every new generation of volonteers a own Group of volonteers. But it shouldn’t be a normal group of buddypress.
It’s a good idear with the tags. But there are volonteers who go abroad for 6 months and others for 12 months. So these who are abroad for 12 months are going to get mixed with those who start half a year later.
I need a way to seperate every half year the users into Groups like “Went abroad in Sep 2009” / “Went Abroad in March 2010”,…
Sure, it would be nice if everyone could stay in contact to each other. So if the new have questions they can ask.
Hmmmm… I siply don’t have an idear what to do.

Thanks a lot of following answers!

ParticipantIt is bad practice to edit the Buddypress Default theme that ships with the plugin itself, because the next time you update, all of your customizations will be lost. That is, obviously, a bad thing.
To make a child theme, just create a new folder with your FTP client at the same level as your bp-default and bp-sn-parent. Call it bp-whateveryoursiteiscalled. Copy the contents of bp-default to it. PRESTO, you have a child theme! Select that theme in your dashboard, and any changes you make will be live right away.
Now you can copy whatever files you want from bp-sn-parent to your new child theme (preserving directory structure, if I’m not wrong) and edit them (ie, in this case, header.php). Any files you do not copy and change will stay ‘stock’. And next time a new version is released, you can upgrade with confidence and any changes you make will persist.
Child themes are a godsend.

Participantit changed because we do not have just “amateurs” who play with the engine… a majority of BP users NEED a better system, for a wide range of reasons.
if you can not duplicate a folder and modify one css file to make it different depending on your needs, instead of complaining that the system is flawed, ask someone to help you. you will learn a lot if you try.

ParticipantIf you want a quick workaround and don’t want to alter the theme files, you could always do it this way…
Goto Pages, and then you need to make two new Pages. One for your Homepage and one for your Blog. Call them whatever you like, for instance – Blog and Home. Now head over to the Settings, then click on Reading and then you’ll see “Front page display”. Simply select the page you created for your homepage as “Front page” and the page you created for your blog as the “Posts page”.
Now goto your blog and you should see that you now have a homepage setup with a static page which mimics the buddypress default blog page, but more importantly, if you goto the url for your blog, i.e. http://subblog.yourdomain.com/blog, it will also mimic the buddypress blog too.

ParticipantIs there an easier way than creating a child theme??
I’m a code amateur and am not sure how to create a child theme…
In previous versions of BP, you could just copy over the ‘social network logo’ file and hey-presto, the ‘custom’ logo would be on the live site.
Why has this changed in BP 1.1.2?
