    Hi @andy

    you said

    Also – something to consider. If WordPress was completely object-oriented, fully MVC, and the most beautifully designed code imaginable – 90% of developers would not be able to understand it.

    would you please tell me when you say 90% of developers who exactly are you referring to ? because I know there are projects like Ruby on Rails that have had a good turned out between developers even though they implement lots of design patterns like MVC, Active Record and so on.

    Also this does not stop at only open source projects, iPhone development framework (cocoa) follows MVC ( and other design patterns) and now there are kids as young as 10 years old that are developing for this platform.

    Also I understand this debate is about MVC vs non-MVC design pattern but I would like to point out that a framework is not just MVC. It’s a collection of many design patterns as significant as MVC that helps the developers to build something in shorter amount of time.

    in Anahita, MVC constitutes the overall structure of the application, but in a closer look, we are using other design patterns that makes the code smaller and more flexible. Without them, I doubt having an MVC architecture would have made that much of a difference.

    Thank you,

    I have WordPress MU version 2.8.2 installed. I have BuddyPress 1.0.3 installed. I have bbpress 1.0.1 installed. I had been running 2.7.1 with 1.0.3 for a few weeks till yesterday morning. Something went wrong and i wasn’t able to login to the main site or any of the domain mapped blogs. Everytime I tried, it would accept the username and password and then freeze at a white screen. Trying to access /wp-admin/ on any of the domains or the original site caused the same white screen. I realized there was a problem and deleted all of the files (after making a backup). I then used svn to install 2.8.1 and 1.0.3 in the same directory that the other one was installed in and ran the upgrade scripts on the same database. All was well. I re-added my plugins and all was well till a few hours later. At that point, I was unable to login again and since then the whitescreens have continued.

    I have received emails from users who have been unable to login as well. I updated svn to the latest trunk and called the update script. There were no changes. There is nothing that appears relevant in apache httpd logs.

    WPMU is installed at http://wpmu.zyrot.com/ buddypress is running on the default blog #1 http://wpmu.zyrot.com/ and bbpress is installed on http://wpmu.zyrot.com/forums/

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi everyone!

    I’ve just realized that the database table named wp_sitemeta crashes after regular intervals for my bp+wpmu installation. The site becomes unavailable and users are shown the ‘FATAL Error’ message.

    Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Is there any buddypress setting causing this problem?

    Yes I posted there too, I also posted on wp job forums. So let’s see what we will get. I think this is not only my problem. It is really strange that wordpress insists on having one domain per installation.

    Let me share that with you, because i’m not able to re-design our dev env.

    Here is what i want to have:

    We have wpmu-buddypress on x.com.

    Can you make the SAME website work on any subdomain of x.com? (*.x.com)

    – Install a WPMU+BP

    – make an x.com

    – make the same website visible on any sub-domain *.x.com

    – leave 2nd and further level sub-domains intact. (**.*.x.com)

    thanks..

    Changing these settings will also not go back and change any existing avatars, so it’s best to set this one time and forget about it (until you update later.)

    I recommend copy and pasting those define’s into a bp-custom.php file so that way BuddyPress upgrades won’t reset those values for you.

    #49650

    As of WPMU 2.8.1 this will work, but with 2.7.1 if you changed an email address, it didn’t get changed in wp_signups, so even if you changed the email address, you still could not reuse the original one you used to sign up. Be careful right now using 2.8.1 as there are several ways that it’s not playing friendly with BuddyPress.

    A user-switching plugin is probably the easiest and safest bet, in my opinion.

    Hi,

    I’m trying to get buddypress to just show usernames, not real names.

    I know the code for fullnames:

    <?php bp_user_fullname() ?>

    But what is the tag for just the username?

    thanks!

    Hi,

    Is there a way to disable wpmu-domain linking?

    It makes us very very inefficient.

    Here is why;

    We have wordpress MU on .x.com we setup dev.x.com. As you know for a perfect staging environment we need user sandboxes run from *.dev.x.com.

    Currently each and every developer has to ‘install’ wpmu before they start working on it, since we work with buddypress, it requires us to spend 8 hours per developer/intern to setup their sandbox.

    Obviously, we set up wpmu to use x.com/user type of blogs.

    I’d very much appreciate if you can tell me how I can change domain names without caring about what wpmu will think about it.

    If this requires some hours of work, we can hire you to do it, just let me know.

    Best,

    D

    Are there any plugins for Joomla that would allow me to show who is online in buddypress? I can use RSS for pretty much everything else, but I would like to show on our Joomla site who is logged in.

    Thanks,

    WPMU 2.8.1 and BuddyPress 1.0.3 have a few issues at the moment. Would be best to use WPMU 2.7.1, or wait until 1.0.4 is released.

    If you need to use 2.8.1, then as much as I usually never like to say so, you might be better off using the latest trunk version. I’ve been running it for a few days now fully integrated with no issues that are obvious or apparent.

    My recommending to use the trunk always comes with the assortment of warnings that it might be broken in some places or unfinished in others, so be careful of that too. Trunk versions aren’t really meant for public use, but it seems everyone is becoming more comfortable doing it recently.

    Also, for group forums to work, your hosting package must allow for XMLRPC, as well as having them both turned on in each *press platform. More than likely something is out of alignment somewhere and even though you swear it’s not, it really is. :)

    To begin with, I would start by following these tutorials:

    https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/bp-103-and-bbpress-which-version-plugins-cookies

    http://theeasybutton.com/blog/2009/07/17/integrating-buddypress-wordpress-mu-and-bbpress/

    BTW, regarding user mapping, the only setting I changed was WP Admin one, mapped to bbPress Key Master. The other four settings remain untouched.

    Hi all

    I have a client who wants to use 1 email address to manage mutiple BuddyPress logins so they can adminstrate / login as ‘different’ people easily :(

    Instinctively I feel this will take a great deal of hacking behind the scenes to allow this – has anyone got any quick and dirty ideas?

    Simply registering X free email accounts to accomplish this isn’t really an option here

    I am still on 2.71 and 1.01 so can’t help directly with version issues but have you definitely put the correct details in the Forums Setup within the BuddyPress dashboard area?

    New development. The Buddypress.org/blog/page/2/ URL no longer directs you to an error page, but instead gives you the same list of posts as on the first page.

    Also, a solution was posted in the bug tracker: https://trac.buddypress.org/attachment/ticket/854/page_2.2.patch but it did not work for me. I’m not sure if its my own stupidity in not realizing where to put it (bp-core/bp-core-catchuri.php?) but it didn’t change anything on my site. I’m still getting the “Sorry, No posts match your criteria”.

    In short: HELP!

    Hi all,

    I’m using WPMU 2.8.1, BuddyPress 1.0.3 and bbPress 1.0.1.

    I’ve installed WPMU, which is working fine, and then integrated bbPress, which is also working fine. I’ve done all of the integration settings, and mapped the following user roles:

    WP Admin -> bbPress Key Master

    WP Editor -> bbPress Moderator

    WP Author -> bbPress Member

    WP Contributor -> bbPress Member

    WP Subscriber -> bbPress Member

    I’ve then installed BuddyPress, and everything works fine; until it gets to forums! I entered all of the forum information in ‘Forums Setup’ under BP, but when I get to creating a group and trying to add forums to it I get the following message:

    Attention Site Admin: Group forums require the correct setup and configuration of a bbPress installation.

    What could I be doing wrong?

    Just launched a new BuddyPress based site for a client who was running a normal WordPress based site before hand:

    http://sharemyplaylists.com/

    The site has been set up as a music community site for people who use the music service Spotify and want to do more than ‘just’ submitting their playlists.

    Lots of issues and things we have learnt about BuddyPress, WordPress MU etc during the delelopment and hopefully now the site is launched we might have more time to get involved answering questions on these forums rather than asking them ;)

    Note that the default home theme for buddypress already links to the member profile. If you are using another theme – awesome!

    My hubby Ron has released a small plugin for BuddyPress to do something nifty.

    BP Blog Author Link will link to the author’s buddypress member profile instead of the author’s posts page. So if your blog template uses the_author_posts_link(), instead of pulling up more posts from that author on that blog, it goes to their BP profile.

    Enjoy!

    Hi cozzie,

    As Andy has stated above, the Dashboard is just a few BP loops on one page (with exception to the bbPress favorites section!).

    Read up on BP loops here:

    https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/custom-buddypress-loops/

    I actually started building my own dashboard-like page for members (kind of mirroring BP’s) and I really dig the BP loops, especially the documentation – that really helped.

    The cleanest way to get separate firstname and lastname into the database seems to be to

    1. make a two or more part name in fullname on the registration form required

    2. consistently split the input from Buddypress’ fullname field and synchronize with usermeta using xprofile_sync_wp_profile()

    How would I do that? I assume this could be turned into a plugin?:

    function xprofile_sync_wp_profile() {
    global $bp, $wpdb;

    if ( (int)get_site_option( 'bp-disable-profile-sync' ) )
    return true;

    $fullname = xprofile_get_field_data( BP_XPROFILE_FULLNAME_FIELD_NAME, $bp->loggedin_user->id );
    $space = strpos( $fullname, ' ' );

    if ( false === $space ) {
    $firstname = $fullname;
    $lastname = '';
    } else {
    $firstname = substr( $fullname, 0, $space );
    $lastname = trim( substr( $fullname, $space, strlen($fullname) ) );
    }

    update_usermeta( $bp->loggedin_user->id, 'nickname', $fullname );
    update_usermeta( $bp->loggedin_user->id, 'first_name', $firstname );
    update_usermeta( $bp->loggedin_user->id, 'last_name', $lastname );

    $wpdb->query( $wpdb->prepare( "UPDATE {$wpdb->users} SET display_name = %s WHERE ID = %d", $fullname, $bp->loggedin_user->id ) );
    $wpdb->query( $wpdb->prepare( "UPDATE {$wpdb->users} SET user_url = %s WHERE ID = %d", bp_core_get_user_domain( $bp->loggedin_user->id ), $bp->loggedin_user->id ) );
    }
    add_action( 'xprofile_updated_profile', 'xprofile_sync_wp_profile' );

    Hook it to register_post? Does this code already check if there’s a two part name? I suspect that happens at ‘if ( false === $space)…etc.’, but I don’t see an error message + redirect or something like that.

    Or is it impossible to use this code during register_post because of this line:

    $bp->loggedin_user->id

    How can I modify the code to make it work during registration? Can I just remove that line? Or run this function the first time the new user logs in? Is there a hook on_activation or something like that?

    Has anyone used xprofile_sync_wp_profile()? Can anyone share code examples? This would solve a major structural problem in Buddypress imho.

    I need to come up with a solution, because integration with most mailing lists depends on having firstname and lastname stored somewhere.

    Alternatively I can use fullname for firstname and create a second custom xprofile field for lastname, but I suspect that solution could cause lots of problems further down the line.

    There have been several threads about this, including some useful code, but also lots of loose ends and confusion:

    Securing components from non logged in users

    Make access members/groups sections members-only

    Plugin to show components to registered Users only

    Apparently a “full-featured privacy (authorization) component for BuddyPress” is in the works for a future release.
