Issue: BuddyPress developers need a common place to share code snippets.
As we discussed today on IRC, we can’t have group forums here yet (Andy needs to enable them yet) and we can’t add a new blog yet (for the same reason).
I was tasked to research possible snippet bin solutions and get back to you all with my findings.
Suggested solutions:
Here are six possible ways to solve this issue.
1. New blog on buddypress.org
A new blog on buddypress.org for sharing code snippets and solutions would be a great solution since each snippet would have a post (title, author, etc) and could take comments from other people. The posts would be searchable and archivable, and have permalinks for sharing in forums and IRC.
This would also leave the main blog to share non-technical stories and ideas about BuddyPress as a whole.
2. Group forum for snippets
Burt\\\’s original idea for this — and still a good one. This has to wait until Andy gets the group forums up and running on buddypress.org. The advantage to this is a nicely organized set of topics (one per snippet) that can be commented upon and linked to.
Right now we can post on the Code Snippet Solutions group’s wire but that is not optimal since wire posts don’t have URIs, can’t be commented upon themselves, and don’t allow enough HTML formatting to show code snippets well.
3. Post snippets to a self-hosted snippet library here on buddypress.org
We could roll our own snippet library using open source projects such as pastebin.com (you can download and reuse the code with a GPL license) or bin.cakephp.org (MIT license, I have an enquiry out about using it). It would probably run on a subdomain (like “bin.buddypress.org”) and be linked from the site itself.
The advantage to this is that we’d control the data and be able to tailor the snippet bin to the exact needs of BuddyPress.
4. Post snippets to another snippet site
There are a lot of snippet sharing sites out there, like pastebin.com, pastie.org, codesnippets.joyent.com, etc.
With this option we would simply tell everyone to use a hosted bin site (we’d recommend one and stick with it) with a certain tag or category (like “buddypress”), then paste the link to the code snippet in their forum topic, blog post, etc.
The hosted solution is not a great option, in my opinion, since we won’t have control over the look-and-feel and wouldn’t have access to dump the snippet contents at a later date if we move it to a new home — all the data that was entered by BuddyPress users would stay on that other site.
5. Codex pages
Each snippet or solution would have its own Codex page. This option is probably the least compelling since it takes a lot of effort to create and manage the pages. Also, the rigid hierarchy of contents and the way the navigation works would not lend itself to a growing, changing set of snippets over time.
6. Sticky forum post
Burt started this topic today, and it’s a great start — especially for new people hitting the site or the forum for the first time. It gives them solutions to common problems and answers to common questions right away.
This won’t be suitable long-term though as the list will be long and will get hard to scan or search. I do think this sticky post should be kept up for the top 5-10 most asked questions, though. That way it’s a kind of “did you read this stick post first?” that has pointers to common topics.
We could also extend the current forum to add a category for “Code Snippets and Solutions” as a new top-level “theme” that would encompass all these snippets as “topics” within that theme.
Please comment / vote on what you think would work best.
Alrighty. My wpmu+buddypress site is coming along and I love it. ndcom.com is the site. My brother and I have fussed around the with Toksta plugin and it works awesomely well. The webcam/mic integration obsoletes the need to type. Here’s my problem, the avatars don’t show up at the bottom. So if I’m chatting via text OR video/audio, the individual’s avatars don’t show up at the bottom – it’s the defaulted “blue” instant messenger icon. So how do I integrate avatars into the Toksta plugin so it pulls the correct avatars?
In another thread I was asking about how to keep up with all my posts in the forums as there seems to be no way to search for it. Another user suggested checking my profile activity stream, which lead me to this question.
On my personal buddypress site, I may write 20-50 articles a day, reply to a few hundred other articles, and post huge amounts of posts in the forums.
Here\’s the problem with that:
Say I am searching my activity stream for posts I made in the forums…
Well if I made the post say a few days ago, it is LONG GONE from the activity stream as it only shows the last few activities I did.If everything is stored already, just not viewable on the steam page, then a few ideas:
1. sort the activity by type of activity
– blog posts
– blog post repsonses
– forum posts
– buddy requests
– etc…..
2. Have the ability to search my activity streams
3. Only show activity for past 30 days on activity stream homepage with pagination
4. Archive all other activity just like wp does for articles now.
5. limit archived stream viewing to the stream owner only – we don\’t want everyone to be able to easily see every single thing another member has ever done, security implications galore there.Unfortunately with the new legislation in the U.S. for social netowrking sites keeping this type of data is going to become mandatory. There are countless articles about how \’social networking sites\’ are being forced to provide specific user information such as what a user posted and where they came from \’ip\’.
Frankly I have been somewhat worried about this, as the cost of a custom development to comply would cost to much. At the very least having all this information stored somewhere and available on demand would at least show that I am trying to comply.
Hello
I’m working on a plugin which provides Achievements similar to World of Warcraft or Xbox Live to BuddyPress. Unimaginatively, it’s called DP-Achievements.
I am still working on a biggish part of the UI, but I have the admin and the main logic all in place and working. What I really need help with are some ideas for Achievements. The example I am developing with is triggered when you post a message to a wire.
Obviously, this is a rather boring idea, and while I have quite a few ideas that I have thought of, I was wondering if people here had any good ideas. To try to keep any discussion I’m lucky enough to get here focused, there are two requirements for ideas:
- Has to have a clearly defined trigger mechanism.
- Has to be possible with an out-of-the-box installation of WPMU and BuddyPress.
i.e.
Good ideas: updating your picture, leaving a comment on a hosted blog/forum or wire post, register with an @gmail.com email address.
Bad ideas: log-in with an OpenID, mark your home on Google Maps or upload a picture to your photo gallery. These are bad because there is no way to log in with an OpenID, mark your home on Google Maps or upload a picture to your photo gallery **because none of these features are provided in a standard WPMU & BuddyPress installation.**
Big thanks in advance to anyone who suggests anything.
There’s been some talk about an invitation system:

(there’s lots more threads)
But there’s also a need to do confirm actions such as password resets or email changes (both are already handled by MU, I know), or cell phone numbers to receive SMS messages.
The built-in WordPress cron and ajax functions seem to offer a clue about how to create a common API to solve this issue:
Register an action and a function to be called when that action is executed.
The API could also allow you to store data to be sent to that function when it is executed.
you may know or not I installed up a new network with buddypress which is manyaklari.com for turkish people.
anyway I am personally writing some blogs under that domain today I wanted to write a new article about java and java.manyaklari.com was taken by someone else. asked him to add me as editor there and he could not find a way to do that. and I check it out. he is right I couldnt find a way to add anymore editor to my blog.
is there a way to be an editor for two sites which’s owned by other members ?
I know that several of the activation/signup emails are located in wpmu-functions.php and while I know it’s not the preferred method, I updated some of the text there.
When testing out the registration functions, I found the text for the emails with the registration information have been updated. But not the activation email, even though I changed that text also.
Is there another location for activation/signup email text? Or is there location for any of those messages in Buddypress?
