I’m building a membership site using WP and I really like the features offered in Buddypress. But upgrading to WPMU is a bit over my non-technical head.
So, anyone aware of any plugins or services that can provide similar functionality using plain old WP?

Topic: junk characters?
Hi! Since trunk r571 I have been getting junk characters on both the site and the dashboard. I will cut and paste them but I am expecting them to not show up properly.

Today I tried r654 and still get the characters. If I take buddypress off the WPMU installation, no junk characters. So it is related. I have tried multiple methods of installing BP to see if something is getting corrupted during transfer, but it happens no matter what I do.
I am using WPMU 2.7.
Can anyone help me? Is this happening to anyone else?
Also happening since trunk r654 is that any site pages with /members/ are a blank white screen.
I’m using WPMU 2.6.5 and on the bbpress forums it says the stable version of bbpess won’t work with 2.6. Over at the wpmu forums they say that the alpha version is working with 2.6. Alpha sounds scary to me, what with Buddypress still being beta. God, I feel like a Greek.
Anyway, which to use:
The latest stable version of bbPress is “Brubeck†version 0.9.0.3 or,
The latest test build of the unstable version of bbPress is 1.0-Alpha-2
I’m using trunk r654, which probably won’t be the latest by the time I post this. Can’t wait till this baby’s released and marinates for awhile. lol
And, of course, my site is nowhere near ready for prime time.

I try it out, but it doesn’t work. It looks like the bbpress-integration doesn’t work. Can you post whitch version do you use. WpMU 2.7, buddypress the latest trunk an bbpress? 1.0 Alpa, lates trunk, 0.9.3? On the bbpress-forum is a discussion why the bbpress-integration doesn’t work. It looks like a bbpress-problem. How du you resolve this?

Topic: Sitewide search
I wonder if there is a possibility of a sitewide search. I am not sure how well the WPMU PLugin “GT Search all Blogs” works… But I wonder, if there is a possibility out of buddypress without the Install of a seperate plugin (“Blogs” searches all Blog-Titles, “Groups” searches all Groups etc… is it possivle to open it to a “search all”?).
Does anybody have a clou or an answer out there??? Thanx!
I am not sure if this is being developed or discussed. To make Buddypress as popular and as easy as WP it should have EASY installation like the famous 5 min installation of WP.
To take care of things like uri like mysite/blog/hername etc all configurations should be done internally and automatically by the web installer.
I think Elgg or some commercial scripts already does that sort of thing.
Topic: A few basic questions
Hi,
I’m looking to install a nice clean NEW WPMU installation for our faculty, around 1500, along with projecting the installation of buddypress once it goes into production (I’m waiting for the added security pieces). Does anyone have recommended hardware for around 1500 faculty with some heavy, some light and some no users. I want to do the hardware request right, and not have to nickel and dime once the the server is up. I’m most curious in storage, RAM, and any other information is willing to share. I’m not interested in a hosting service. the WPMU will also be used for distributing faculty web pages through WP blogs.
Also, will there be any fee associated with buddypress once it goes live?
Not sure if this is just me or maybe an issue with gmail, but I’m subscribed to the buddypress-dev digest mailing list and it seems a lot of the messages come though as follows with no actual content. Anyone else seeing this too?

I am having some issues with my install of Buddypress. I made sure to update to the latest revision (641).
When I add a friend, I get “Friendship could not be requested”. When I try to write a message to the Wire, I get “Wire message could not be posted”. Same thing when I try to create a group. Also the blogs that I have created in the WPMU backend are not showing up in the blog list. The posts do show up in the News section though.
My wp-config.php has VHOST = NO, which I know was causing issues with 404s last week. Could this be a similar issue?
