    Yessssss! Thanks @andrewteg! I was seriously beginning to think I dreamed the whole thing up…not sure why I could not find this page, but that is EXACTLY where I was.

    Now, since I have found what I was looking for, I’d really like to get some opinions of the plugin and see if this will actually do what I am planning for this site. I am open to all opinions and suggestions. My understanding of BuddyPress and bbPress is coming along and the site is starting to look like what I envisioned. You can see the preliminary site at http://accessories.ldjautobody.com.

    First, let me explain what I have planned for this site and, like I said, I am open to all suggestions and comments. I would like to hear what the experts have to say. Good or bad, I need your opinions. You ALL have great ideas and I respect whatever you might have to say or add. 🙂

    This blog and forum are dedicated to custom car and motorcycle enthusiasts everywhere. Car enthusiasts are passionate about their subject, and in addition to giving them a place to share their projects and discuss those among each other, I would also like to let them post some articles, hoping that the fresh content will keep the search engines hanging out on the site and help boost the rankings. I have never run a forum site or used BuddyPress or bbPress before and I’m not really sure how this all works in relation to SEO. I do, however, deal with car and motorcycle enthusiasts on a daily basis and I know that I can most likely count on them to get some very good discussions going among themselves and that is my hope for this site.

    We will also be doing some affiliate marketing from this site, and my hope is that in a perfect World, the fresh content and activity level of the site will keep us ranking well in the search engines and bring some new customers to the site. Since we are an “auto body shop”, our normal advertising is concentrated in a very local area. The affiliate site, however, will have a much broader range and we will be advertising nationwide vs. the small local area that the body shop is limited to. So my hope is that the increased activity on the site will increase the number of people visiting and also help us reach out well beyond our local area. At least, that is our goal for now!

    Thank you all again for all of your help. I am looking forward to hearing anything my experts have to add as we move forward with getting the site ready to launch. 🙂

    @wpgoddess Yes, it will be good to know what the dev comes up with revised buddypress.php. Double-check that the_title and the_content are there. Good luck.

    Ah yes – that line should only be there if you’re running BuddyPress Followers. Also, the following line:

    $wall = array_merge_recursive( $following, $friends, $me );

    Should be changed to:

    $wall = array_merge_recursive( $friends, $me );

    On my site, I have set up a separate activity stream for the Wall; if you apply it across your entire site in the way you have, it will restrict ALL activity to the personal Wall. Basically, if you want a normal activity stream AND a personal Wall, you have to set up two separate activity stream pages with different scopes (one universal, and another just for the Wall).

    @wpgoddess There could still be a way to salvage the situation with your premium theme. Open up your theme’s page.php file and Save As > buddypress.php file. Ask your theme dev that we need the_title() and the_content() in buddypress.php and that will facilitate compatibility process. Upload that revised buddypress.php into your theme folder in server. It’s possible that you might need to tweak some styling but you should be good to go.

    Tip: if you have bbPress sitewide/group forums installed, you can copy the revised buddypress.php with the_title and the_content and Save As > bbPress.php and upload to theme folder in server as well.

    Never get hung up on one theme because the one you may love the most may be junk as far as coding
    (Please don’t take offensive as it is not directed towards any individual). Try others, or hire a well known buddypress web designer like @karmatosed. I mainly do development so looking pretty is more a designers cup of tea but functionality is my thing!

    @mercime, Thanks for your advice,

    oh I missed that part on wp-config.php. I will try them.

    I have already tried to change my database LOL it’s one of my testing sites. it seems to be working. however, I haven’t tried my real one. I am kind of worried.

    Mine was secondary blog with the secondary blog instruction and now I am changing multi-buddypress. therefore I have this problem.

    Thanks for your useful tips and advice,

    Hi, I completely uninstalled the WP installation, deleted the database and started from scratch.

    BuddyPress looks awful on ThemeGoods SIRENS theme. There was no “Create Group” button, no sidebars on BuddyPress pages, the search functions at top were overlapping other content. The links on the Profiles pages were just links – not tabs. The post button and post in drop downs were hidden. You can’t write a title on discussion posts. Uugh. Just ugly. I hired an ODESK programmer with years of programming experience. He spent 24 hours trying to fix things and even wrote a child theme. He could not get it to look good. Money down the drain.

    I really like the theme and want to use it for the main website. I think I am going to need to do a separate subdirectory install with a BuddyPress theme for my community. Can you advise me on the best way to go about that?

    I want Community members to be able to participate in blogs and classifieds on the main site and, of course, participate in the BuddyPress subfolder. Do I need a multisite install to enable them to be part of both installations??

    Would it be best to create a subdirectory install like community.mywebsite.com or a folder install like mywebsite.com/community ?

    Thanks for all your help!! I greatly appreciate it!

    RE Enable Multiblog – Where did you get “bp-config.php”? You should add enable_multiblog in wp-config.php just before /* That’s all, … Happy blogging. */ as posted at https://codex.buddypress.org/developer/developer-docs/using-multisite-with-buddypress/bp_enable_multiblog/ And, you should activate BuddyPress sitewide, i.e., via Network Admin > Plugins, not in individual site.

    Do not touch the database. If you want a subsite as your primary BuddyPress site, then see section on configure the BP_ROOT_BLOG https://codex.buddypress.org/user/install-buddypress-on-a-secondary-blog/

    I have found that…

    wp_X_bp_activity, wp_X_bp_friends… etc..

    X is id value.

    What if I just change, wp_2_bp_activity to wp_3_bp_activity, would it be ok to work fine?
    If it’s right, what else I should change or modify?

    Thanks,

    do you mean “define ( ‘BP_ENABLE_MULTIBLOG’, true );”?
    Yes I did on bp-config.php

    if I put it on only wp-config.php (recommanded by others), it’s not working. therefore I put it on bp-config.php..

    @hungrygolf best place to get assistance with the plugin is at plugin dev’s site forums. Did you add enable_multiblog per plugin instructions.

    You mean what it mentions here

    http://premium.wpmudev.org/manuals/the-buddypress-manual-2/configuring-the-general-settings-of-your-buddypress-community/

    ?

    And then as the admin I would be the only person who would be able to see the create group button?

    @gentlemanhog – If it works, then it doesn’t matter where it is. 🙂

    The conventional wisdom is to keep things out of functions.php unless they are theme-specific. In your case, I would say this function belongs someplace other than the theme’s functions.php file.

    Hi,

    I did this, after some digging into the $bp object after the registration form is posted. Not tested properly in the wild yet, so you might want to double check before using this. Done via WordPress 3.5.1 and BuddyPress 1.7.2.

    add_filter('bp_core_signup_send_validation_email_message', 'custom_bp_change_activation_email_message');
    function custom_bp_change_activation_email_message($message) {
    	//	Get some globals
    	global $bp, $wpdb;

    	//	Get the slug of the activation page
    	$slug = $bp->pages->{"activate"}->slug;

    	//	Get username from the signup form just posted
    	$username = $bp->signup->username;

    	//	SQL query to get activation key for that username
    	$sql = 'select meta_value from wp_usermeta where meta_key="activation_key" and user_id in (select ID from wp_users where user_login="' . $username . '" and user_status=2)';

    	//	Getting the activation key from the database
    	$activation_key = $wpdb->get_var($sql);

    	//	Make activation URL
    	$url = sprintf("%s/%s/?key=%s", WP_HOME, $slug, $activation_key);

    	//	Custom message with activation key
    	$message = "Yayy! Thanks for signing up! Please confirm your account!\n\n$url";

    	return $message;
    }

    I’ve got this in a theme’s functions.php file, but not sure if that’s the right place for it. Would it be better in bp_custom.php?

    Ta,
    Alan.

    Why not add the “BuddyBlog” plugin and give your members the opportunity to blog! It’s a great “free plugin”…I am going to add it to our own site shortly. We are in the process of creating a brand new site right now and it’s not ready to launch yet, but we are planning on including it in our site.

    Since I have not used the plugin myself, I don’t have a lot to contribute on it’s function, but from what I have heard, the plugin works wonderfully and if that’s true, it should give you everything you need. I’m sure there are lots of members out here that do use the plugin that could give you more information, but from your description, it might give you all the functionality that you need. I was also reading the “BuddyBlog” info last night and in the support blog, there is someone who actually has the code that allows members to blog, but does NOT give them ANY access to the back-end…a great function that would ensure security along with giving members the ability to blog.
