In reply to: BuddyPress group forum now shows up as bbPress forum

ParticipantI have found two other posts in this forum ( @HorrorUK‘s post and @mt78‘s post) that have the same problem — which is when an existing group’s forum setting is toggled (disabled the re-enabled):
- topics and replies in that forum no longer show up in that group’s forum
- get ‘There was an error when creating topic.’ message when trying to create a topic in that group’s forum
- the group’s forum now shows up under site wide forum listing
The conflict seems to be stemming from the combination of bbPress and BuddyPress’s discusssion forum component. When an existing group’s forum setting is being re-enabled, it would seem bbPress is used to re-create that forum. This would explain why the group’s forum end up showing under the site forum listing ([bbp_forum_index]). However, when trying to post topic to that forum, BP’s doesn’t quite know where the forum is and therefore unable to process the request.
I would like to hear someone from the BuddyPress development team’s thoughts on this.

ParticipantHow did you do the database cleanup? You used phpAdmin or another tool? And what table? Thanks a lot!

Participant@modemlooper sorry for being a noob, this is my first attempt to work with WordPress Networks and BP.
After adding a new subsite (Community), it looks like the new plugins should be installed via /wp-admin/network/plugins.php. I think my next step is installing BP and then activating it on the subsite (only) then follow the BP installation?
I went commando and am trying this on the live site (under construction enabled), that’s why I want to make sure I am taking my steps wisely.
Should I still follow this article after installation?

ParticipantAfter you cleared the database and recreated groups and group forums, have you tried disabling and then enabling group discussion forum again to see if you still can create a topic for that group? I am asking this, because this is happening to my site. I cannot afford to clear the database and recreate groups because these groups already have topics and replies. I look forward to hear your results. Thanks.
Here is my post.

ModeratorYou can do some mods with CSS but it will never be 100% perfect. If you are using a child theme you can copy over a template file from BP plugin
buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/activity/index.php
your-theme-folder/activity/index.php
If you have that file structure bp will use your file instead. You can then edit html to make it fit better. DO NOT edit CSS classes and id’s of BP markup or the javascript will break.
bbPress work similarly but you place bbPress template files in a folder bbpress

Participant@Chouf1, although both bbPress and BP use the “forums” slugs by default, they are configurable. I used the documentation in codex to configure the slugs such that no conflicts exist between group and site forums. In my case, I chose to altered BP’s default from ‘forums’ to ‘group-forums’ and allow the site forums to continue to use ‘forums’ for base slug —– which is one of the recommendations in the codex documentation.
However, just to make sure I went ahead and changed the following:
- BP group forum’s slug changed from ‘group-forums’ to ‘forums’
- bbPress’s site forum base changed from ‘forums’ to ‘siteforums’
The result is EXACTLY the same as my original post which is by disabling then enabling an existing group forum for a group causes that group’s forum to become listed as site forum with 0 topics and 0 replies. While all other groups’ forum and topics remain as group forums.
@Chouf1, have you check my site?

ModeratorOOTB BuddyPress and bbPress are not built for small screens. You will need to re-write the template files if you want a better experience on those devices. BP 1.7 will work better with mobile plugins but the content will still be squished as those plugins are just a wrapper for the content.

ParticipantIt is a single WP site
WP and BP are installed in the subdirectory wordpress (http://example.com/wordpress)
BP is in http://example.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/January 22, 2013 at 4:54 pm #151477In reply to: why is buddy press so backwards?

Participant@gavpedz maybe something’s getting lost in translation, but you can post activity status updates in the home page of the Group (activity by default) you are already a member of. If you mean otherwise, please explain further.

ParticipantI’ve just done as discribed in article but it doesn’t work. Profiles still the same for all the Network…
I’ve created the ‘bp-custom.php’ in ‘\wp-content\plugins\’, added there the code from the article in documentation ‘Segregated X-profile Fields for Multisite’ but nothing happened…
I don’t understand what means Add the following code to a functionality plugin network activated on your multisite install…

Participant@miskostanisic Is this a single WP site or a multisite installation? Are WP/BP installed at domain root e.g. http://example.com/ or in subdirectory?

Participant@remixines I will check it later today and post changes here for set up when sidebar widgets are activated.

@mercime
Participant@jimmygibbs you’d have to copy over the HTML structure from your other BP template files e.g. /members/index.php onto the /members/single/activity/permalink.php file which handles the individual activities.

ParticipantThank you Chouf1
Paste the code used by developer to “create a menu that was only accessible once the member has logged in. He managed to do that however he only had the activity, members, forum and groups page and no profile or messages , friend requests etc now. ”
January 22, 2013 at 4:18 pm #151467@mercime
ParticipantWhat would it take to make it like this: http://mysite.com/members/joebloggs/
@transmission install WordPress and BP at domain root http://example.com/ so that member’s link would look like http://example.com/members/joeblogg
In the first link you posted, either you installed WP at http://example.com/buddypress so that’s why member’s link are at http://example.com/buddypress/members/joeblogg or you made a custom menu with BuddyPress as main menu and place the Members page under BuddyPress menu

Participantgroup-forums vs. site-forums: both are using “forums”
in the core, BP use the name “forums” for group forums and this is how BP manage his integrated forum part on bbpress 1.2 (from head)
in your bbpress 2.2.3 setting you use the default “forum” in base name. Change this and you will see that your forums will run correctly.
It’s a mistake to think that a simple “s” will make a difference…See here: https://mercime.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/bp16-swforums-03.jpg?w=700

ParticipantThen I edited the Header.php file, added theses codes to the beginning and ending of the nav div area
If you can’t produce this code it’s difficult to know what kind of errors you made !

Participanthi @fitnessblogger,
use this in wp-content/plugins/ bp-custom.php
(If you haven’t this file you have to create it first)Tested on 1.6.3
`function bpfr_excerpt($text) {
return trim($text,'[…]’);
}
add_filter(‘bp_activity_truncate_entry’, ‘bpfr_excerpt’, 3, 3 );`if you want to replace […] by ‘xxx’ you use this
`function bpfr_excerpt($text) {
return str_replace( ‘[…]’,’xxx’,$text );
}
add_filter(‘bp_activity_truncate_entry’, ‘bpfr_excerpt’, 3, 3 ); `Take care with copy/pasting from here. Quotes must be single quotes at least.

@mercime
Participant@dcyweb If you click on the Register link while you’re logged in, then the default behavior is a redirect to home page. Log out first.
As for your Forums page, which forum did you activate? Group Forums, Sitewide Forums or both? https://codex.buddypress.org/user/setting-up-a-new-installation/installing-group-and-sitewide-forums/
