Participantplease don’t jump into old post !
You want to modifify this phrase:
Registering for this site is easy. Just fill in the fields below, and we’ll get a new account set up for you in no time. who sit on the register page.
The string is in bp-templates/bp-legacy/buddypress/members/register.php line 22
and in the pot file of bp 2.0.2 at line 1236.The pot file is a working copy for translators, not the file to modify to get any customization.
To do this you have to use poEdit, or a similar software.
poEdit only read the pot file, then he create a po file on the fly and when you save this po file, poEdit generate a mo file.This is a compiled file, not human readable, who is used by the gettext php module to translate the strings he find in the buddypress code.
Pot files are provided by the plugin authors. It’s a simple text format file with a specific syntax.
The po file is also a text format file, but written differently, as it contains the original string in english AND the translation of this string in a foreign language.
And the mo file is the system file who have to use on the server.register.php is a template file, so if you have to change only this phrase, you can make a copy and paste it into your child-theme and modify the wording directly in the file. Not orthodox, but it works.
If you have other question about translation or wordings, feel free to open your own topic, give your bp version, theme name and used language on the installation.
Topic closed.

danbp
ParticipantIt seems to focus on Members random page.
Ya, but only seems. The codex is not a ready-to-use answer to any kind of problematic or the solution for anything, but a guide who explains how things can/should be done with BuddyPress.
That’s why you’ll find essentially examples who can be used to extend or achieve your projects.Codex pages are written by volonteers (like you tomorrow ?), and none of them is able to know or to write about any given issue, situation, need.
It certainly would be an awesome codex, if every BP user would share some snipppet or simply some experience, by adding his personnal how-to…
Hold on ! You have to try, experiment and realize yourself. The other face of freedom and open source, i guess
If you have questions, do not hesitate. Like the codex, this forum is yours. 😉

ParticipantThat’s not it. I’m in members-loop.php. That (as I understand it) is the file that controls what people see when they go to the default members directory in BuddyPress (the page that shows you everyones icon, their name and when they were last active). I want to add the users email addresses to this screen. At one point I found a line of code and pasted it between:
<div class=”item”>
<div class=”item-title”>
“><?php bp_member_name(); ?><?php if ( bp_get_member_latest_update() ) : ?>
<span class=”update”> <?php bp_displayed_user_email(); ?></span>
<?php endif; ?>
</div>
and
<?php do_action( ‘bp_directory_members_item’ ); ?>
<?php
/***
* If you want to show specific profile fields here you can,
* but it’ll add an extra query for each member in the loop
* (only one regardless of the number of fields you show):
*
* bp_member_profile_data( ‘field=email email’ );
*/?>
</div>which made the email addresses show directly under the names of the site members. I can’t find that code again.
Thanks

danbp
Participantoh I see: you are very picky ! 😉
The only way to be notified is this setting page (under the condition you activate BP’s private message component). And as you can see, there is no possibility to forward message.
On front or on back end.As an admin on our site, I am left with tons of unnecessary work when I need to forward messages to my mods from a user.
I’m a little stuned why you receive user messages if they want to contact a mod in fact. If you do unnecessary work, i would suggest you find a better handling method first. But i maybe wrong and this point is more subtle as i understand it here.
Anyway, this is your really specific BP usage. And so far i know, it is not a very common usage. BP cannot respond to absoulte any user usage. No software can do so.
As site admin, i never encountered any problem to contact the site members. And i never needed to create a friendship first to contact any of them. This action is only used when you want to invite members to join a private group.
So if you think you’re right, you’re free to ask for an enhancement on the Trac. If the devs will consider your demand as justified, you can begin to hope to receive satisfaction one day.
If not, or if you don’t want to wait, you’re free to develop your own solution.Of course i disagree with this opinion:
It was most certainly not designed with efficiency on mind.IMHO it’s better as nothing. Imagine one second that BP had no messaging system… The actual maybe rustical, incomplete or not responding exactly to your need, but would you be efficient enough to find another free and so powerfull software as BP is ? 😉

ModeratorI ended opting for Graphene, there are some compatibility issues, but it is so flexible, I must have tried about 30 different themes before settling on it.
I reckon all in all I’ve assessed about 500 plugins to arrive at what I have got. Comparing to other social networking sites I think I’m pretty comparable to pay for options such as Ning, some aspects are seriously lacking though. User profile customisation and on site social networking options being the biggies.
I wired my landing page to be the activity feed, with a blog summary slider, and then used a right sidebar to do a lot of the customisation with widgets. For the members profile pages I added a second left sidebar with more personal widgets like friend and group recommendations.
Image and video sharing was another issue, I think I’ve just solved that though. I figured it was ket not to have basic users having to access the admin bar to add images to galleries etc but they also needed to be able to create galleries that the whole site could see.
Currently I’m at the stage where I keep finding features I never knew I had lol.
What I would really like, is a USP, a feature that other social sites do not have. Not sure what that is exactly and it may be that the total collection equates to that but I still feel it needs something. Maybe insertion of slide shows into blogs without the short codes etc, so normal users can do it.

Also using BuddyMenu 2.2.0 to utilize shortcode for community homepage
I am using BuddyPress with OptimizePress 2.0 and creating a community page.
I have enabled the members to create groupsEverything works well except for the fact that members cannot see public groups or a group directory.
From the Groups Menu the Sub-menus are “Memberships” and “Invitations”
In the “order by” drop down there is no way of finding anything either.I want new members to be able to access the group directory and join the public groups I already created with the admin account.
Any suggestions?

Ok … Probably I was tired and I wrote all in a very confused way in my first message … 🙂I do have both pages, Register and Activate …
But I do NOT see them in the menu. I can not add them in the navigation because I see, for instance: groups, members and activity (and in fact I build navigation menus for that 3 pages… But I do not find there that 2 pages …Now, after you gave me the urls, they actually works. But I didn’t find a way to build navigation menu. Once I have URLs now. I will try to build navigation menus as url-menus.
But, I am still confused …
Because I do not even find a way to shouw a LOGIN FORM …
Is here a BP Login Form I can show in a page (other than the default http://www.sample.com/wp-admin, of course!)Thanks again.

Zane
ParticipantSmall update with regards to bluehost. I have been exchanging emails with them regarding this email. For your reading enjoyment.
First Bluehost tries to accuse me of spamming
Hi, it appears your emails have been reported by multiple providers
(such as yahoo or comcast) as containing spam, this in turn has flagged
our outbound email filter. We have removed your domain from the filter
for now. To prevent this, I would advise the following:If you are sending email via email lists or a third party ad vendor:
BE sure you are not using any purchased lists
Be sure 100% sure the emails you are sending to are emails that those
people want to receiveBe sure you are using a double opt in when adding to your email lists
Be sure you are not sending to ANY spam traps- a spam trap is created by
multiple providers, it is an email that is never given out and found
only in source code. If a spam trap receives an email from a domain,
this is a clear indication that domain is using an email list that was
not created by people opting in, which is against the terms of service
and is considered spam.Further more, be sure you are following our complete terms of service
concerning Sending email:We do not allow the sending of unsolicited mass emails to others. We
have zero tolerance for accounts which contain material that has been
promoted through unsolicited email (spam) or mail fraud schemes, or
which contain pages that promote or condone the sending of unsolicited
email.All emails sent from our servers or sent from another server that
advertise a site that is hosted on our servers are required to stay
within these rules:(1.) You are required to follow all rules in the Can Spam Act
(additional information at:
http://business.ftc.gov/documents/bus61-can-spam-act-compliance-guide-business
)(2.) No purchased lists. Everyone that you send emails to MUST HAVE
CONTACTED YOU DIRECTLY and asked for the information you are sending.
Affiliate opt-ins are not a valid method of opt in.(3.) The list must be double opt in. This means that the recipient must
request to be added, and then you must send an email asking them to
confirm the request.(4.) You must have an automated opt out link; Email based opt out
(mailto: links) are not acceptable.Quoting from the above link:
Please see our Terms of Service at
https://www.bluehost.com/antispam_policy and
https://www.bluehost.com/acceptable_use_policy#spam for additional
information.If you are sending email individually:
Change all email passwords and check all devices/computers for any virus
or malwareConfirm with everyone that uses email from your domain that they are
following the spam rules as stated aboveIf you are sending email through a script or a contact
form/tell-a-friend script:Be sure you have or add a captcha feature on all contact forms or
tell-a-friend scriptsCheck your websites content for any malicious or suspecious files that
should not be thereUpdate all your Websites scripts including themes and plugins
Once you are have confirmed you are following or now applying all of the
above information, you will need to wait for your domains reputation to
become clear. We have no time frame on how long this takes as our
outbound filter relies on information from other providers to determine
this.In cases of a compromised script/email:
Change all your passwords to your emails
Update all your email scripts
Check for malicious files hidden within your sites
Secure all devices that access your account.
We hope this information helps you.”

If you have any other questions please reply to this ticket, chat us, or call our technical support line which is open 24/7.
My response to the bluehost response above
I send no emails from this account. I don’t have any email accounts
associated with this domain. I only use one email forwarder to send any
email sent to admin@site.com so I am not really sure any of
your analysis below holds any ground. Please provide any information to
back up your summary? What email account was sending messages?There is a bigger issue at hand here. Look at the buddypress FAQ. Why
do you think that out of every web host they only call out bluehost?Your resolution was the same resolution that was put in place a month
ago. How do I prevent my account from getting flagged again? Please
find out what it is about buddypress that is causing bluehost to
incorrectly flag accounts as spam accounts.Bluehost continues to stick to the assumption that my account is spamming
Thank you for contacting Technical Support. We understand that sending out emails is vital to any business. Since you are on a shared server, all email you send out uses shared mail servers. Our filter system is in place to prevent our mail servers IP from becoming blacklisted by third party companies. When this occurs, it will block the ability of all of our customer accounts to send out emails. The process then becomes long and complicated once it has been flagged. In order to prevent this we have put in place several services to prevent this from happening.
We don’t solely check blacklisting services to see if a domain and or IP address is being blacklisted. One of the spam prevention tools that we have in place relies on reports from other email and internet service providers; such as yahoo, comcast, broadband and others. The reports were generated by those who receive the emails and are marking them as spam or junk. We do not have the ability to view who specifically flags the email. Due to this, we can only rely on the reports from these major providers that report them to us. As we do not have control as to if they flag it or not, we cant control if your domain gets listed or not.
I would recommend checking through the lists that you send out and remove any email addresses that you get bounces from. You can then remove that email address from your list. Over time people may forget that they had signed up for your list and are simply marking your messages as spam/junk. It might be a good idea to email your list and have them opt-in again to your list. You can then remove those that do not opt-in to ensure that that those on the list are legitimate.
If you have any other questions please reply to this ticket, chat us, or call our technical support line which is open 24/7.
My response
I don’t think you are reading my email responses. I do not send emails
from any account on this domain. The only emails that are sent are
registration activation emails. How is my domain getting black listed
if I am not sending emails?Their response. Apparently my email forwarder to my own account is also somehow sending spam email to other people and buddypress is responsible for spam.
Hello,
You send e-mail via buddypress, you also send mail via the forwarder. These both contribute to the blacklist you’ve now been added to.
My response. I request information on what about the activation emails is causing my site to get blacklisted
I have only received one email via the forwarder and that wouldn’t put me
on a black list. Therefore the activation emails must be what is putting
me on the blacklist WordPress installations get registration spam all the
time but they do not get the sites blacklisted. What is it about
buddypress that is triggering the blacklist?Their response. It is top secret.
Hello,
We release no specifics on the exact criteria incorporated to flag the contents of e-mail messages to prevent our filters from being defeated. Generally, quantity of messages sent, specific reports of spam e-mail from third parties, internal links or keywords associated with known mass mailing agencies, or a combination of all of the above can lead to the domain’s reputation being reduced to the extent that it requires intervention.
My final response tonight
Very well,
The net sum is I do not send email from this account. The only email sent is activation emails sent by wordpress/buddypress. I have had the typical spam troubles dealing with fake registrations from spammers and I assume those spam registrations are flagging the spam filter. I have never had this issue with wordpress spam activation emails flagging one of my accounts as spam so it is clear that SOMETHING about the buddypress activation emails is to blame (it is the only variable that has changed). This fact is reinforced by the fact that buddypress calls out bluehost.com’s failure to address this email in their FAQ https://codex.buddypress.org/legacy/faq/
[quote]BuddyPress isn’t sending out emails (eg. activation emails, email notifications). This appears to be a problem with certain web hosts (Bluehost primarily). Members of the BP community have had success using]/quote]
I have provided a copy of the activation emails my account is sending on my previous ticket for analysis. I have changed nothing to the default buddypress activation emails.
Please invest some time in identifying why this very popular wordpress plugin is triggering spam filtering by bluehost email. I am happy to make any modifications to my code to resolve this issue and I am sure the buddypress community would love to remove this section from their FAQ. I appreciate your support addressing this issue. Thank you for your continued support with this issue. I have invested a lot of time and effort into this project and I would hate to see it die because bluehost continues to flag my account incorrectly due to an error in the spam filtering software on bluehost’s end. Thank you.

Participanti am still a bit confused as to why this idea is so difficult to achieve.
is it not common to want to flatten the hierarchy of members and just display the list at random, period? i don’t want visitors to have to use a dropdown list to choose what order members are displayed in. I want members displayed in random order, 12 to a page, period, with the search box at the top. So every time a new visitor comes by there’s a random group of 12 on the first directory page. That way, in theory, we are not showing any kind of favoritism and the folks who start with “a” don’t get an unfair amount of visibility.
i can get the 12 to a page, and the search box… but for the life of me i can’t get RANDOM.
it insists on using ONLY the active members at random, not ALL members, and frankly, our members aren’t that active – this is a directory, not a community – the members come in once, update their profile, and go away – then joe public comes by and looks for them… to find one in their neighbourhood.why is it so hard? 🙂 or am i just that dense?
i’ve tried using$query_string .= '&per_page=12&type=random';in my function and all i get are the 6 who look at themselves the most 🙂 if use type=alphabetical, i get everyone, but then…. wait for it… they are alphabetical…
i’ve tried combining types, and there seems to be a hierarchy still…please help.

Boone Gorges
KeymasterThanks for the additional details.
I don’t have access to the Vertex theme, so it’s hard to give precise instructions. But what you’ll need to do first is to identify whether the theme comes with a full-width (or one-column) page template. I’m guessing that it does. (You can test by creating a test page, then selecting the various Template options from the dropdown under Page Attributes when editing the page. Cycle through them, save the page, and view it on the front end until you find one that displays the page content without the sidebar.)
Then you’ll need to identify the theme file that is powering this template. The geeky way to do this is by looking at the source code of the Templates dropdown (page_template) and get the value of the option you’ve located. Then find this file in your theme directory wp-content/themes/vortex.
Then: assuming you’re using a child theme of Vortex, create a directory wp-content/themes/vortex/members/single/. Copy the template you found to wp-content/themes/vortex/members/index-directory.php. That should be all you need to do.
If you’re not using a child theme of vortex, this change will be overwritten next time you update the theme. In that case, the following filter should be an all-purpose solution. “full-width-template.php” should be replaced with the name of the template.
function bbg_vortex_member_directory_templates( $templates ) { $my_template = WP_CONTENT_DIR . '/themes/vortex/full-width-template.php'; return array_merge( array( $my_template ), $templates ); } add_filter( 'bp_template_hierarchy_members_directory', 'bbg_vortex_member_directory_templates' );April 2, 2014 at 9:15 am #180646In reply to: Bad Link to Profile Edit

ParticipantNot sure if you are still out there, but I am trying very hard (not a coder, btw) to create a site that will allow the members control over who can see their postings, friendships etc.
I cannot figure out how to do it with buddypress. Every solution that has been offered has not actually done the trick, be it a plug in or adding code.
My site is a paid membership site – and restricted to members of a local “in person” social group.
The way buddypress is working, even with the “activity privacy” plug in installed is this:
there is a page called activity stream. It has 4 tabs in it:
all members
friends
@mentions
rssEverytime someone joins the site, it shows up in the all members tab
everytime someone accepts a friend request, it shows up in the all members tab
everytime anyone posts any status updates, photos, or anything, it shows up in the all members tabanyone who has a membership can view the all members tab, therefore, nothing a member does is private.
I have not tested emails, so perhaps emails are private, but so far, nothing else is.
I have tried in vain to find a way to be free of the all members tab and cannot get a solution. I am considering abandoning buddypress and trying symposium and seeing if that offers privacy.
Once the all members tab is resolved, you would also need to resolve similar issue with rss feeds, as that pumps all info out there as well, as best I can tell.
Buddypress seems to be designed as a very very public space and I fear that trying to accomplish any privacy is a losing battle.
If you find something that does work, I would appreciate knowing what it is as I am at my wits end with it.
Best of luck to you.

You can. In fact, if you’re sure you’ll never need them you can perform a 301 permanent redirect to ensure they never show. For example:
function redirect_pages() { if ( bp_is_register_page() || bp_is_activation_page() || bp_is_members_component() ) { wp_redirect( home_url(), 301 ); exit(); } } add_action( 'template_redirect', 'redirect_pages' );If for some reason you find you do in fact need the activation page, then remove

BP can be very strange sometimes. Did you copy bp-legacy over? One of the things I did to make changes in the beginning was turn files into blank pages to see what happened. Also there is a document that may help: https://codex.buddypress.org/themes/theme-compatibility-1-7/template-hierarchy/
that doc explains how BP looks for files and grabs info. I had a huge problem took a long time to find it and it was very simliar to yours (I had to find the title of members pages as it was breaking the pages for some reason, found it by copying the bp-legacy over and guessing which files they were haha, took forever, hope you find this faster than I did.)

I have my buddypress child theme files, and checked the index files and that’s where the action for the header text is, but I need the actual action that will give me “<h3><?php _e(‘Sitewide Activity’, ‘buddypress’); ?></h3>”I am looking for the file that holds actions like the following:

I assumed that would be buddypress-functions.php but I had no luck searching that file…Thanks again for your help, if I find the file needed I’ll post here in case anyone else needs to know…

This brings me back to my original question, is there a way that I can install BP, (BuddyPress) on a minimal scale taking advantage of the Membership functionality while having an individual page for each member so that each Member can upload their own content such as their images and text?
I still need to find a way to create the Tabbed set up for the individual Member pages (which is what the client really is after) later.
The immediate I need to ascertain is can I install BP on a minimal scale taking advantage of the Membership functionality only, while keeping my twentyeleven child theme in tact.

Participanti’m still having some issues with the buddypress platform. I filled the registration form and i got a success message saying the activation code has been sent to my email. When i checked my mail box, i couldn’t find the activation mail from yesterday 15:00hrs GMT till now.
Please what do i need to do to fix this issue?
Also, what’s the landing page for already registered members?I’ll appreciate your response greatly.
Regards

ParticipantYes, thanks, after much digging I did find that page.. ..and followed it to the only option that actually works for me, the link to http://blackmarketserver.com/blog/2010/07/13/pretty-permalinks-in-wordpress-3-0-and-iis6/
I removed index.php from the permalink configuration and now the custom 404 is working.
If I had the option of running linux, I would.. ..but I can’t believe this has been this way for what looks like 3 years now and not been fixed to work better with IIS. -
