First of all, thanks for the great work with BuddyPress so far! I’m playing around with it, and enjoying it a lot. Can’t wait for 1.0 and some real documentation, that’ll certainly me develop themes and such.
Anyway, I’m trying to drastically alter the top menu bar, preferably without hacking bp-core-adminbar.php, although I will as a last resort. I need to make these changes work across ALL themes on blogs, as well as the members part.
Can I use bp-custom.php in any way to resolve this?

I’ve setup buddypress using default theme and I see following links in the menu [the one that appears below the [Login] [Signup] button.
It appears like this –
[Home] [Blog] [Members] [Groups] [Blogs]
The second and last option, [Blog] & [Blogs] is kinda confusing. I’d like to change [blog] to something like [My Blog] and [Blogs] to some other name.
How can I do that?
Topic: Admin bar mouseover issue
I am facing this issue with firefox3
this is related to the timeout for mouseover action of the admin bar.
Whenever i try to select any menu item (say friends from my account) the menu just vanishes/closes. Its the case with the host site buddypress.org as well…
its just that the timeout value for javascript looks to be set to some greater value.
Does anybody know whr this settings can be changed?

@brandtd, this is certainly possible. As a matter of fact, this should happen as default unless you change the width of the body or html elements themselves. This is because the “Buddy Bar” isn’t contained by anything that has a relative position attached to it.

}@brian, duh I get what you’re saying now. If I can give some feedback about the Buddy Bar for a moment, I feel that it should be an all or nothing kind of deal. Either it’s always there for people to use, or it’s never there and people have to naturally find their profile area and do things from there. Toggling a whole new set of what are essentially just short-cuts and adjusting the entire layout of the screen, even if by 26px, provides for a moment of awkwardness from a user perspective. For the 3 seconds it takes for someone to think to themselves “Hey what’s that? Do I need it? What does it do? Oh gosh there’s tons of menus now? What is this stuff?”
Now if you’ve used WordPress.com or signed up for a Gravatar before, then the bar idea isn’t new. But for what I consider the core crowd we’re catering to by using BuddyPress as a social networking platform, if it isn’t uniformly worked into the design of the site from the beginning, it only serves to confuse.
Again, this is just my opinion. Not saying it’s right, and certainly not saying that there is a better way. Just saying…

<?php }?>In your header file, and attach the CSS to that, rather than to the body itself? That would then only show that buffer when the user is logged in, and once they are logged in, that buffer will push the body down (as styled by the CSS you will give it in your base.css).
Does that make sense?
Topic: Changing the word blog
Hello,
Strange request but i would like to setup a site with a more traditional diary theme.
Therefore i would prefer to use the word diary instead of blog.
I’m good with php so i can go in and edit code but before i do, does anyone know of any hooks anywhere where i could change the words around? I doubt there is.
So if not, which files should i look at to change for example, the blog directory pages, the top menu buddypress bar, profile page etc.
If you could point me in the right direction i can figure it out from there. Ideally i was looking for a way to preg_match or str_replace before it is outputted to the screen but i don’t think i could do this.

Hi wardeh. I was checking the ‘topics with no replies’ and saw you here. All by your lonesome self. How goes the battle this week?
You don’t want to turn off groups but you just don’t want the option to create more groups to be available. Well, you want group creation to be a site admin thing only. Hmmm…
I went and looked at the member theme code and finally arrived in the core code and lo and behold Andy was thinking of you! There is an unused option for the menu items. ‘site admin’ only. You’ll have to modify one line to turn off the group creation option for everyone except you.
In the file /mu-plugins/bp-groups.php at line 205. This currently reads:
bp_core_add_subnav_item( $bp, 'create', __('Create a Group', 'buddypress'), $groups_link, 'groups_screen_create_group', false, bp_is_home() );
Change that line to read:
bp_core_add_subnav_item( $bp, 'create', __('Create a Group', 'buddypress'), $groups_link, 'groups_screen_create_group', false, bp_is_home(), true );
That change adds the ‘true’ parameter at the end which normally defaults to ‘false’. It’s the ‘site admin only’ sees this menu item flag.

Topic: Bugs? & Questions
Hi – first: This Project is GREAT – exactly what I was looking for combined with a perfect timing… We are running right now a test-community just to check out BuddyPress (redmountn.ch)
No I’m afraid, that I am a green horn, and it’s my fault… But I’m posting my possible bugs and questions anyway:
1. Could it be, that IE has some Troubles with BuddyPress (I know, nobody here uses it, but the people “out there” do
)? Examples: Friend-Finder doesnt really work, The Logo in the Menu-Bar is in the wrong place, adding a friend does work, but the process doesn’t stop etc… If there is a link underneath the pulldown menu (in the menu-bar), the menu doesn’t work properly)2. Could it be, that real-time Updating doesn’t work properly…? The Activity-Feed of my Friends does updates only every couple houres (in our test-community)? The friends-activity is outdated, etc
3. Group-Pictures don’t work… (I tried it with bigger ones that 450×450)
4. Did you think about other languages? We are from Switzerland and would like to have/make a german translation. But it doesn’t make sense to change the files themeself (because of updates). Any other things planned, in mind, possible?
5. I think it’s not very userfriendly, that my landig-page after login is the backend of wordpress – my opinion it should be my graphical-profile “in” BuddyPress or something…
6. Maybe that is a dummy question – but anyway: What is a “Group” in BuddyPress? Is that a tag? How does it work in the “backend” of wordpress and can it there be changed etc..?
