Not only is ‘where’ mentioned in the post above there is a link to a discussion in greater detail on the WP forums, please read first before asking ‘where’ if things are still unclear.

I had to repost this, as my original topic stripped out a lot of the information
    ———————————————————————————

    Hi all,

In the activity stream I’m trying to get the permalink from the activity header.

The activity header is in the following format by default:
    – (username) replied to the topic (topic name) in forum (forum name)
    – (username) started the topic (topic name) in forum (forum name)

I’m trying to get the (topic name) which is a hyperlink. Any idea how to do this?

I’ve tried bp_activity_get_permalink( bp_activity_id() ); but it only grabs the ID of the current topic, and it doesn’t come in the form of a hyperlink.

Also, is there a way to strip out (username) and (forum name) into separate variables?

    Can anyone please help me?

    Hi @djpaul,

Does uses 1.7-beta1 bp-custom.php for slug translation?

    – My bp-custom.php working correctly in 1.6.4 BP but not working correctly in 1.7-beta1.

These slugs are translated just for user profile, not group profile. It is OK?

    define ( ‘BP_MEMBERS_SLUG’, ‘clenove’ );

    define ( ‘BP_FORUMS_SLUG’, ‘klubovna’ );

    Thanks for idea, help.

Did you glance at the current forum topics or search?

There is a very similar question , please read that thread first and see if that helps at all.

    hi @tvanes,

if you use 1.6.4 and bbpress 2.2.4 as plugin as standalone forum , there are no more bbpress tables as in previous BP versions. And the interacting between BP and bbP is poor.
If you use BP 1.7 beta and bbpress plugin 2.3 beta, there are no tables too. But the interacting between BP and bbPress is much much better.

But unfortunatetly, you have to wait a little for both stable version to get somehow what you want…

Did you try posting on bbpress.org? That’s the best place for this query.

    Thanks @mercime,

But I understand how it’s suppossed to work. However, I removed “Forums” from the Setting->BuddyPress->Pages Tab. Now I have this:

    No forums now.

So what do you do now in BuddyPress 1.7? There should probably be an option to add forums like the initial install has?

You can do responsive but it’s not so easy with content such as profiles and forums. Because of social sites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest etc. users are expecting something dedicated and streamlined.

@bphelp it depends on who the host is, find a good one and you’ll be just fine (webhostingtalk forum is the best place to start looking for a quality host that is affordable). you can find shared hosting that is *better* quality than some VPS out there, you have to do your homework! shared, reseller, VPS, etc. these are all labels and you have to scratch to get at the real stuff underneath as well as the host’s reputation and service history

    @ubernaut
I reject completely the notion that counting visits is acceptable. This is hosting we are talking about! just because a few hosts have started calling themselves by a new tag ‘wordpress’ does not mean they are doing anything different or special. It is still just plain old hosting.  And as I said, you don’t need ‘staff’, you can get a freelancer to set up your site and plugins for $50 or so depending on the complexity. And once it is set, it is set. Instead of paying monthly, you pay once for that as it should be. And then you pay a reasonable fee for hosting monthly or annually.

ps dreamhost? seriously?!? c’mon! do yourself a favor and drop by the forum I mentioned. You’ll thank me for it. There are smaller and medium size hosting co. you’ve never heard of but they are the BEST and they have the rep to prove it (as well as great prices).

You probably don’t want bbPress activated network wide, unless you’re confident you want forums on every single site in your network. (hint: unlikely)

If you’ve already network activated bbPress, and if for some reason bbPress’s roles are in each of those subsites, you have some cleaning up to do. bbPress 2.2 and beyond do not save roles in the database anymore, so bbPress’s roles won’t float into sites they don’t belong in.

Roles are per site, and each site can have their own plugins active. Plugins like BuddyPress can sometimes be Network activated. BuddyPress does not add roles anymore; it used to with BuddyPress Forums in 1.5 and before. If this is a site from before BuddyPress 1.7 betas and bbPress 2.3 betas, some of the role integration is more complicated than it needs to be, and it’s addressed in 1.7/2.3.

We’re moving away from database capabilities exactly because of the confusion you’re experiencing. There’s no proper UI to display roles and caps in a way that makes much sense. There are plugins out there that try to help, but in my experience many of them provide medium functionality with high complexity.

Basically, you’ll need to do some digging, figure out what’s wrong, which could be an unlimited combination of things based on your configuration and needs…

@singfa sure you are silly 🙂 for not mentioning your setup details lol! It would be helpful to know what you have installed that may be a culprit!

@singfa setting up a group is a prerequisite to creating a group forum. The group has to exist first before a forum can be created for it.

    Hello,

I have the same problem on my new installation. I used a couple of buddypress themes and i have the same error when i want to create a new topic on my group forum.
Anybody can help us with this issue ?

Well as has been made clear on so many threads on this sort of requirement it aint part of BP core so BP and this forum can’t really be a lot of help.

The concerns you note above are all to do with third party plugins, you have roughly two options, fix those that are broken, approach the plugin author with request for features/commission additional work be done.

Other than that little more can be said.

@bphelp I did that. But it didn’t work as I had thought. It only restricted access to Forums and Activity Streams.
Pages like Members ad Groups were still visible to visitors.

Anyway, the function I found in the previously mentioned topic works. So my goal is achieved. Yee. 🙂

Thank you both leading me in the right direction!

@hnla On second thought never mind, you can close this topic. I guess I just wish the admin in dashboard/appearance/menus was a little different, like I said its more of a WordPress thing than a BP thing. The part on the left says “Theme Locations” I think it would be more appropriate and less confusing if it said “Select Theme Menus” I know how to create custom menus but I have noticed that some new users get confused and I think the reason is because “Theme Locations” should be renamed to “Select Theme Menus” Anyway sorry for babbling about something that is probably not even relevant to this forum. Apologies!

Neither one seems to be working completely. Only restricts access to forums page.

Yes I made a plugin that does that its been tested up to WP 3.5.1 and BP 1.7 beta 1. Its pretty simple so far, as its still in development. All you need to do is read the readme.txt for instructions about sitewide forums if that is what your using then activate it. Here is the link:

This will prevent access to BP pages from non logged in visitors and redirect them to the registration page. Make sure to read the readme.txt for instructions for sitewide forums

I am noticing my private intranet that I am setting up on buddypress is acting similar as of today (possibly yesterday). I initially saw a message saying a group was not set up for forums, but saw that the checkbox was already checked in admin. I then tried to enter a new post. My bb_posts table is still populating with the new posts, but I am getting the same error as listed above in the buddypress default theme and the posts are not populating in any part of my sites forum content.

These types of posts get replies if someone feels they want to help. They are not problems with BuddyPress core but customizations.

Your code example uses the activities loop which is not best way to find forum topic counts. Because you want to specify a date range you might have to query the db directly. Look at this function that returns total topic count for a user

    Thanks @mercime

I’m pleased that the latest versions install so easily.

What I don’t understand is why a user sees no groups or Forums when accessing them through the BuddyPress menus The Forums are all but useless when accessed this way.

    domainnane/forums seems to be useful
domainnane/members/membername/forums/ does not seem to be useful
    Ditto groups

Obviously, I’m missing something or failing to understand the bbPress/BuddyPress Intergration. Then again, groups are nothing to do with bbPress so I’m very confused.
