    Hello @tgoedde

If you’re using the theme BP Default, it’s quite easy actually. As this theme supports custom-header, you can simply edit the BuddyPress pages (Activity, register, groups, forum… and so on) in which you want to add a custom header.

I just tested this in my activity page.
1/ Edit the page in WordPress backend
2/ Use the media button to select your photo, it must have at least a width of 1250px (if under, the pic won’t show)
3/ Upload and choose not to insert but to use as featured image. Once done you can close the thick box window.
4/ you’ll see in the edit page / the featured image box at the bottom right with your uploaded image shrinked.
5/ Save the page. And you’re done ;)

Repeat these steps for each BuddyPress template you want to add a custom header to.

The trick to load bbPress 1.x (aka group forums) is this: `do_action( ‘bbpress_init’ );`

As it will load bbPress, you should only do that when you know you need bbPress. It increases memory use and database requests for that particular page load, though this will be mitigated to an extent with persistent object caching.

Sorry for posting this somewhat randomly but I cannot for the life of me find the ‘create new topic’ button for this forum – I need to report the fact that the pagination on the buddypress.org website is broken – can’t get past page 1! Thanks for showing where to look anyone!

What theme are you using? Does your theme have custom menu (Appearance > Menus)?

    Thanks for the info.

I think more Forums set-up info is a must and perhaps is better delivered in a bbPress codex page specifically for BP.
And provide a link on the bb-forums-setup page
Or it could go right on the bb-forums-setup page.

    A start to discussion:

@paul_gibbs, I have tried to create an action in bp-custom.php and then hook into it in the theme. The problem seems to be that from

    …/wp-content/plugins/my-plugin/myfile.php

you cannot access any functions which are defined within

    ../wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-forums/bbpress/any-function-defined-in-here.php

At the front end, the error you get is:

‘Fatal error: Call to undefined function any_function_starting_with_bb() in …/some_location/plugins/bp-custom.php on line 102’

    Developers deserve huge credit.

    Testing on a local install.

    Child theme of bp-default.

    bp multi network.

    Forums for Groups.

70+ plugins simultaneously (list at http://pastebin.com/0FmZgbrk). Mainly buddypress plugins – some old.

    All well so far

Obviously there are hundreds/thousands of other plugins – just didn’t get round to them –yet.

    a) With bp-upm (a major plugin imho) -perfect in single install, in multi-install settings do not appear in dashboard but access can be got through http://mydomain.dev/wp-admin/network/admin.php?page=bp-upm-settings. Could just be on this installation.

    b) Also haven’t really tested bp-mass-messaging or mass messaging for buddypress (2 plugins) though they both turn up and appear to be ok.

You guys and the volunteers here have normalized the expectation that anybody of average intelligence with access to a computer can create a sophisticted scalable social network in a few hours.

    How cool is that!

    Thank you.

Wow! Thank you very much! As far as I can tell that worked!

One question/concern. I did not change the following because, well, I couldn’t find them:

    /groups/single/home.php

No, BuddyPress or bbPress 1.0 doesn’t have any short codex. The short codes you refer to are part of bbPress 2.

== So why does Settings-BuddyPress-Forums still have an install button ? ==

@shanebp I agree. Will you do the honors to raise this in trac?

== And do we really need a separate bbPress plugin for site-wide forums? ==

    Yes :-)

    == I’ve assigned it to Discussion Forums in bp-settings – Pages ==

If you’re not going to use Group Forums, disable the component in BP 1.6beta1 in Settings > BuddyPress > Components – uncheck Discussion Forums and Save. You don’t need to assign Sitewide Forums Page in BuddyPress > Pages. Just add the Sitewide forums slug in the custom menu.

In Settings > Forums, if you’re using “Forums” as slug, then create a page named “Forums” then add the forums shortcode/s you prefer https://codex.bbpress.org/shortcodes/

I had this same issue and fixed it finally. I left page set to forums, but in bbpress settings, I changed “Forums base” from it’s default “Forums” to “mysite-forums” and it solved the problem. Had to do a custom menu link to link to mysite/blog/mysite-forums but it now links properly to the forums page

Now if I can figure out why my register page comes up blank….

This has been brought up in the forums before. I recall some causes to pre-filled profile fields in registration page:
    – plugin conflict with an SEO plugin and a captcha plugin – can’t recall specifically which ones but deactivating all plugins except BuddyPress, then activating plugins by batches of three helped them identify the culprit/s.
    – theme conflict where theme added options for SEO and the like

i have an instance of wordpress which has buddypress plugin. The groups forum is set up. I have the like plugin inside wp-content/plugins/ and i am using the bb_get_topicmeta from within a php file within the like plugin.

How am i meant to be hooked into the action?

im trying to check if there a particular meta_key is set in the topic meta table and then the code adds the topic meta key/value .

== That is what I meant when I said I installed all the components to make sure BP was compatible. ==
Just making sure what you’ve done so far.

== I added one of pages BuddyPress created, “Forums” to my header. As you can see when you click on it, its blank. ==
Did you also install Group Forums and/or Sitewide Forums via BuddyPress > Forums? If you installed both, did you make sure the slug for Group Forums is not the same slug used for Sitwide Forums?

@socialrocketship As mentioned above, based on the HTML structure of your theme, you need to change 16 template files within the 6 BP folders transferred to your chameleon theme folder in server during the compatibility process.

If you’ve previously changed any of the BP template files in your theme folder in server, replace all of them for a clean slate by deleting the 6 BP folders – /activity, /blogs, /forums, /groups, /members, and /registration – then re-run Appearance > BP Compatibility.

Download the 6 clean BP folders to your computer hard drive.

    A. At the top of each of those 16 template files I linked to above, replace
    `

    `

    with the following:
    `

    `

    Save files.

bp_get_topicmeta() doesn’t exist in BuddyPress, or bbPress 1 (aka group forums) so… no :)

    Did you mean bb_get_topicmeta() ?

I assume you are talking about bbPress 2. (aka ‘site wide forums’). You’d need to ask on bbpress.org forums for best support.

I’m assuming since you didn’t mention it, that you have WP 3.4 running with BP 1.6 beta 1
    .
Go to dashboard menu Settings > BuddyPress > Settings – Forums Settings – bbPress configuration, and make sure that you have the absolute path to your bbPress configuration file there ( for group forums located at root of your WP installation).

    Hi qylie/all,

Yes I’m talking about the activity tab.

I have investigated further as to what shows up in the Activity Streams.

Both Streams: Creating Docs and Editing Docs

    In addition to this:

On ‘All Members’ Stream: Posts and Comments on Blog

On ‘My Groups’ Stream: Forum Topics, Creating Groups, Joining Groups, Creating tasks

This isn’t a comprehensive test, just reflects the activity I have done.

What I would expect to see is that on the ‘All Members’ stream the activity of all members on the site would show, and on the ‘My Groups’ stream all activity relating to the groups that the user belongs to would show.

In addition to this, it would be good if all posts and comments on the blog show on the “All Members” stream, which is what I am seeing at the moment, even if comments are made by non-members (I haven’t tested this yet as the site is members only at the moment). If this is the case though, the tab would be better named “All Activity”, rather than “All Members”.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this, or can anyone help me make sense of the content of each stream?

    Thanks,

    Nick

Your talking about the activity tab right? Mine is completely blank. I was expecting to see the activity there to. I don’t know what activity is suppose to show up there. So far i have made several groups, forum topics, calender events, documents etc.

actually didn’t take it as criticism, it’s just a difficult area support forums for OS apps are run by volunteers, the ones that can answer questions effectively are more than often working pros so haven’t that much time for in depth help.

There are a few private forums or sites dedicated to BP you could try buddydev or bp-tricks? but not sure of the level of support those can offer.

I do understand what you mean. I felt my comment could easily be taken as a criticism, but that’s not my intent. There are definitely a lot of posts with crazy B.S. questions here, which deserve nothing more than a cursory response. By moderation I just mean dedicated and detailed responses to legit questions. It’s been frustrating for me, as I’ve received more of a response and detailed help from my Facebook friends than from the BP forums.

Again, I truly don’t mean this rudely. If I was a volunteer moderator here and had to wade through all these threads, it would be impossible to offer the level of support I’m talking about. I’m just pointing out that I think there’s a market for higher end support. Does such a thing not exist?

It’s true that a forum like that would take a lot of management, but it seems to me BP is pretty much the best solution for this type of site. And as soon as you start using BuddyPress, it becomes clear that ongoing support is going to have to be part of the equation. A monthly fee for solid, responsive tech support seems like a very viable opportunity. I’d be happy to help facilitate that if there’s anyone that agrees.

Why do you place this emphasis on moderation? We have approx half a dozen moderators which is more than enough and I’m not sure I see what you require us to be moderating?

In reality I would say most questions do get answered, however questions along the lines of “I need to do xyz but have no idea how” can tend to receive a perfunctory response if it means that something has to be coded up for them as this forum – obviously – is not a service and manned by volunteers.

Paying for BP is not an option it’s open source software, maybe someone needs to create a fee paying membership forum where users can expect dedicated help, but that starts to become a full time job for someone – forums take a lot of management and dev time to maintain.
