@Al B Here is what I feel you need to do:

    1. Click on the Group.
    2. Click on “Admin” tab in the group.
    3. This should take you to your groups settings. You should see a sub menu showing “Details”, :Settings”, “Avatar:…etc
    4. Click on settings and make sure “Enable Discussion Forum” is checked.
    5. Save
    6. Now if you click on the forum tab you should see something.

‘Tags’ are added by users it’s their decision to do so not WP support to run a specific support area for BP, in other words there aren’t support forums in two places really, it’s just unfortunate that people would ask BP specific question on WP support when this dedicated site exists.

Ok scrub my comments, WP does what bp does here for plugin support, so Yes! it is unfortunate that two places exist to support one entity.

Why not? :-) Not all posts at WP.org forums tagged buddypress have issues specific to BP. In many cases, WP.org moderators have referrred posters to our forums here. In some cases, I’ve referred posters here to multisite forums or third-party plugin and theme forums in WP.org when appropriate. And many plugin and theme devs have their own forums as well.

If your post is unanswered after 24 hours, feel free to bump your topic. 99.9% of those who help out here are volunteers/developers living in different time zones.

== define ( ‘BP_ENABLE_MULTIBLOG’, true ); how would this appear to work? ==
Didn’t see your earlier post https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/bp_enable_multiblog/

== does each blog have its own setting? ==
No, there’s only one instance of BP for a multisite installation by default.

== newly invited members (using “Invite Anyone” plugin, only appear as users in Network Admin and not on any blog. Is this a bug? ==
No it’s not a bug. It’s supposed to work like that for multisite even without Invite Anyone plugin. Can’t find the WP trac ticket that changed from user listed per site (old WPMU days) to sitewide user list (in WP 3.0).

Wow. I’ve been using the google approach, but just assumed that their search functionality had to work. Virtually every CMS site I look at has a search box on it. If it truly is a element that can’t be fixed….what about integrating at least a Google search box on the site. Hmmm.

    Thanks @foxly for the update.

I’m having the exact same problem. Before this solution by @r-a-y worked:

    https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/autocomplete-private-messaging-not-working/

But now it’s not working anymore. Any help would be much appreciated!

    – Check database and see if seven tables for bbPress were automatically generated during the forums installatio process – https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/installing-group-and-sitewide-forums/3/#bp-forums-db

    – Check the bb-config.php file created during the group forums installation process at root of your WP installation. DB information correct there?

    – Check wp-admin menu BuddyPress > Pages = is the Forums page associated with “Forums”?

    – Re-run wp-admin menu Settings > Permalinks and click Save.

Search on buddypress.org has never worked properly and probably never will work properly. This is because proper, natural-language search is a hard problem that the developers behind WordPress and Buddypress don’t have any experience with.

The most efficient way to search buddypress.org is to go to Google and type in

    “site:buddypress.org whatever you’re searching for”

OK, so the search functionality doesn’t work then. Bummer. Kinda hard to look for other posts (and thereby eliminate redundant posts) w/out that ability. Hmmm…. Anyhow, thats @peeld.

I’m reopening this topic because @nanchante2 solution works, but there are other things which could be improved.

That solution allow us to go to forum topic when click in reply button. However, I wonder if there’s any way to reply directly inside stream page and that reply been shown also on forum topic.

    thanks!

I’ve no idea what it was. For the third time, I deleted everything, all the way down to deleting the subdomain, then re-created the subdomain and reinstalled everything. Forums are finally working. Sanity is restored. Thanks!

    WP 3.3.1 and BP 1.5.3.1 — Check
WP and BP installed at domain root — Check, sub-domain root
Changed to bp-default theme / deactivated all plugins — Check
    Linux server

Re: group/stand-alone — I installed stand-alone so that I could get some data for the DB. I thought if I just imported some existing data it might change something. I installed bbPress stand alone, created a topic or two with a post or two, exported all the data to a SQL file, changed then prefixes of the tables, and inserted it into the buddyPress/bbPress tables, then deleted the stand-alone installation. Through phpMyAdmin, there were clearly records in the tables; buddypress still said there were no forums, and I was still unable to create any forum post. I’ve since also deleted all records from the wp_bb_XXX tables.

Current forum setup: “Forums for Groups” installed (under “Forums” tab at buddypress admin); Sitewide forums NOT installed; NO other plugins; default theme; everything is as Plain Jane as humanly possible. Still, same errors on submitting new forum topic: either: “This group doesn’t have a forum set up yet.” or “Please pick the group forum where you would like to post this topic” (which of course I did).

    Sanity check:
    – WP 3.3.1 and BP 1.5.3.1?
    – WP and BP installed at domain root?
    – You have changed to bp-default theme and deactivated all plugins except BuddyPress?
    – You want group forums so you don’t need the stand-alone forums installed and messing up with installation. Or are you trying to make the stand-alone forums work as group forums?
    – Linux or Windows server?

Still just trying to keep this current.

In short: I can’t get forums working. Nothing I’ve tried works, not even suggestions (rather, the suggestion — thanks @mercime) here. It’s a rather fundamental element that is not working, and I’m about to give up on it and go look for alternatives.

Solved my issue… had to start from a totally fresh install, but went a bit more step-by-step with the install to ensure that the forums were working.

Terribly inconvenient, have to work on restoring a bunch of things now… but overall, I would say it is worth it for the group forum function.

-A little off topic, but if you all are into the Occupy Movement and want to stay informed about the happenings in Minnesota, feel free to join me at occupymn.org

I guess I shall slowly master BuddyPress. I’m thinking the issue that I was having was due to my changing of the root file names in the process of making it live in place of an older site.

My recommendation is to always have lots of backed-up information just in case you need to start fresh with new software! :p

    Thanks all for your suggestions.

Now onto the next task… custom admin bars that do not show posting options immediately. :)

I want the forum feature that Yahoo has. Where you can post a comment, but another user has the ability to reply to an existing comment.

    Take for instance this: http://sports.yahoo.com/tennis/news?slug=afp-tennis_aus_open_nadal_federer_20120115

I’ve had this issue for some time now – they’ve told me they’re working on it, but my posts on the topic typically get deleted ;)

I just went to another directory, installed stand-alone bbPress but configured it to use the same DB as by bbPress installation. I pulled all the data from the stand alone tables and dumped it into the wp_bb tables. Still, even when browsing tables, buddyPress says there’s no forum.

    Thanks for your help.

The DB password was different in the bb-config file. I commented out the old one, put the one from the wp-config file in and there was no change. I’ve since commented out the second password and returned it to the original that the installation created in bb-config.

All seven tables are there. I even manually inserted info into the DB under forums and it doesn’t see a forum exists.

You’re welcome. If I recall “reports” from WP.org forums well, I believe you also need to increase your memory limits from 32MB to 64MB at GoDaddy if it’s allowed on your plan. Good luck.
