    @djpaul

    Do you mean the “auto group join” plugin?

    Someone please build it so that I can stop seeing this argument recur on these forums every few weeks. If I didn’t have seven thousand other things to do I’d do it myself but hey – I just took all the thinking out of it by drawing a map :)

    i’m wrapping up a buddypress group forum extras plugin which brings in some bbpress plugins to the bp-group forums (sigs, bbcode or shortcode, quote)… this might be tempting; especially the support forum plugin. i’ll look into it.

    Some people are just refusing to understand the BuddyPress Groups concept. If you want something that acts as a site wide discussion forum, create a Group. As Boone’s suggested, it’s not hard to auto-add new and existing members to it; he’s even listed what a plugin would need to do for it.

    or just install BBpress on WP ;)

    Parts of the necessary plugin:

    1) Upon activation, create “General” BP group, with forums enabled

    2) After creation, have a script add all existing members

    3) Hook into registration so that new members join the group

    4) Write a function that filters the content of bp_has_groups everywhere it appears to remove the General group from all group listings

    5) Sit back and watch the (free and open source) jack roll in

    Someone please build it so that I can stop seeing this argument recur on these forums every few weeks. If I didn’t have seven thousand other things to do I’d do it myself but hey – I just took all the thinking out of it by drawing a map :)

    I would hope BP doesn’t simply ape Facebook as it’s model?

    Look at Ning as an example of how another SN does things; they have a single dedicated site forum if you want that and I think to some extent it’s easier for users to grasp that concept?

    @r-a-y

    In a perfect world, it would be nice to have both, fully-integrated. In some communities, there are some forum subjects that apply to everyone…for example, Support Forums.

    It would be nice NOT to have to join a separate “support” group to participate.

    I do buy that group forums are the way of the future…but i see a need for non-group forums as well.

    Bug alert!

    Tweetstream conflicts with Forum (bbpress). Specifically, users cannot edit their forum posts/comments (or at least comments) when tweetstream is active.

    Peter, I set up a vanilla WPMU/BP setup that duplicates the error; contact me for private link.

    I agree. I’m about to contact the tweetstream author because there is another bug now. It is a conflict between Tweetstream and Forum posts.. When enabled, the tweetstream plugin prevents authors from editing their posts/comments.

    thank you! @peteranselmo

    I am looking forward to it ;)

    re group access levels – generally it could do too,

    is there a way to block access to groups/forums – until users log in?

    as I understand. this setting is not about public/private group though

    maybe i am wrong. i do not know, i am quite new to BP

    It’s like Facebook.

    There are no open forums in Facebook, is there?

    The idea that you must be in a Group to post to the Forum seems incredibly odd to me. All the above workarounds and solutions are messy, no? Why can’t we just have the forum behave like a forum, allowing anyone who has an account to post a thread?

    Am I missing something here?

    I’d love to know the answer to this, too. I want my members to be able to use the Forums, but I don’t want them creating hundreds of groups just so they can post a thread.

    (I don’t really understand why you have to be in a group to post in the Forum. Am I missing something?…)

    Thanks in advance!

    Best,

    Justin

    @kriskl

    Thanks for the feedback, I’ve had someone else suggest that as well. My thinking is that documents are currently consistent with the group access levels. For example, if you can seen forum topics and members of public groups, you should be able to see documents. If there’s group content you only want group members to see, then it should be a private group.

    I see your point for encouraging outside users to sign up, I’ll consider adding an option for that behavior.

    @pjnu, Yes, it won’t be an issue anymore. Thanks for your patience.

    @modemlooper that will brake all the overlay magic…in release 0.1.3 (later today) css should be right for all browsers, if not please open a thread in wordpress.org forum with tag bp-album ( https://wordpress.org/tags/bp-album?forum_id=10 )

    @tosh my memory was wrong, I forgotten to put is_site_admin in some points, fixed in 0.1.3.

    Thanks for the recommendation! I’m going to have to read up on that. I’m still very new to BuddyPress, but I really like it. As a quick test, I copied/pasted the loop from the example Activity Stream Loop, and it seemed to work just fine. So, with some “tweaking”, I think it’ll be what i need.

    BTW – round here I don’t think bumping is too taboo, but the 13 hours between Friday night and Saturday morning are generally not a very busy time on the forums :)

    LOL! For the first part: good to know! For the second, well, the fact that it’s a “busy time” for me is only further proof I need to get out more! :D

    Thanks again!

    Not sure why bp_blogs_get_latest_posts() isn’t working for you, but you might try as a more future proof alternative (bp_blogs will be phased out) the activity loop https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/custom-buddypress-loops/the-activity-stream-loop/

    So you’d have something like (off the top of my head – probably won’t work without tweaking!)

    <?php if (bp_has_activities( 'action=new_blog_post&max=5' ) : while ( bp_activities() ) : bp_the_activity(); ?>
    // use the activity loop functions to display information
    <?php endwhile; ?>
    <?php endif; ?>

    BTW – round here I don’t think bumping is too taboo, but the 13 hours between Friday night and Saturday morning are generally not a very busy time on the forums :)

    I know bumping isn’t good forum etiquette, but… any ideas on this? Again, other functions and features of BuddyPress are working just fine. But, I can’t seem to get this function to work. I’d really appreciate any help or insights! Thanks!!!

    This is related to the strict mode of mysql. https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/there-was-a-problem-posting-your-update-please-try-again

    BP 1.2.2 works provided you run a script to fix an existing table.

    Here is the link that helped me solve this problem:

    You are doing a great job. Tweetstream is great! I finally figured out the problem with not posting when creating a new topic. Did you read that? https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/tweetstream-twitter-plugin-beta-testers-needed/page/7#post-42356

    This site uses “Deep integration” with a standalone bbPress install. In the near future, this website will change and forums/groups will follow the regular BuddyPress model. The only reason this is like it is currently is because of historical reasons and the fact that the site’s theme hasn’t been updated for a long time.

    If you want a site wide forum, just create a group and call it “site wide discussion”. Easy as that.

    Wonderful! I was just asking about the same thing yesterday: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/join-all-public-groups-at-once and glad I found this plugin. Experimenting…

    Every time you post something new your post gets bumped to the top of the forum. I am having this same issue so I will bump your post for you so you don’t get in trouble. Still haven’t found the solution to my problem or yours.
