ParticipantI’m totaly agree with you Marcella!
All those imbrication of css, js and php was really a pain in the ass for me… I spend hours and hours trying to find out what was the script that was doing a conflict with my template…
I’m sure that the buddypress team wanted to do something easy… They idea was: “just change the thing you wanna change on the default theme” but when you wanna change everything and you wanna add some functionality you realise that you are completly lost on what is doing what from where…
@ Paul Gibbs: Im’not really agree with you… the default theme needs to showcase the basic functionality of buddypress… and juste the basic functionality… and if you want to had other functionality you can download other themes from the web…May 16, 2010 at 11:55 pm #78421Marcella
ParticipantTo me it’s more troublesome for the designers and developers to get rid of js function in a child theme that inherits everything from the default.
As a designer / developer surely you know what can happen with progressive enhancement. P2 is a fine example of what a developer knows. I mean the new 2010 WP theme doesn’t come with js does it?
I like to grab it, dig in, or build from scratch. Now with the default theme inheriting a whole lot more it sometimes is a pain.
Why am i complaining this is one heck of a free meal. :p

KeymasterThe default theme needs to showcase everything that BuddyPress can do. Like you point out, it’s down to individual sites to decide what BuddyPress features to use, which relates to what javascript will be required.

Participanta little unrelated but does anyone here ever wonder why the default theme has so much js?. i understand it’s pro and progressive but really don’t think this sort of function is needed at the base theme. It’s kinda confusing because your not sure what’s core and what’s not sometimes.
I believe it’s up to the community to serve whatever js they like.

ParticipantHello Boone.
Thank you for your kind help. I’m new to BP and i am still trying to understand in depth how it works. About your suggestions there are a few things that do not work exactly as you said (at least for me).
1. Admin has to approve all new sign-ups and make the new Member part of 1 (and only one) Group. Only after this action by the Admin, an activation email is sent to the new Member. As an alternative to this process, a new Member could only sign-up after the Admin sends him an invite to a particular Group.
I need the Admin to review the sign-up request, add the new member to a particular group and then send a confirmation to the new member. With the suggestion you made (wp-invites + bp-group-management) all works well, but the member gains access to the website as soon as he signs-up. When he logs in for the first time he is still not part of a group, because most probably the Admin didn’t have time to do this. For me it’s not important if the system is set in a way that it has to be the Admin to invite new members or if is up for the new members to ask to join. As long as the new member gains access exclusively after he has been added to a group by the Admin.2. If the Groups are set to private they still appear in the group directory. I changed them to hidden and now they can only be seen by it’s members, which is perfect for my needs. But since that now i’m left with one empty tab in the groups directory (all groups), is there a way of making it disappear by editing some file? If so, which one and where?
3. Members can only see the list of the other Members of his Group
For now, even with all groups set to hidden, the members can have access to a list of all members. Is there a way to make them have access to a list of only the members of his group?4. How can i prevent members to exit the group or groups they are part of? Maybe by editing some file?
Again, i appreciate all the help that you can provide.
Thank you.May 16, 2010 at 3:02 pm #78370In reply to: BuddyPress as a school network

KeymasterYour second, third and fourth requests can be taken care of by making sure the groups are set as Private. That means that they don’t show up in public listings, and their contents are only visible to members of the group.
In order to make sure that people can only be part of a single group, you’ll want to hide the Send Invite screen for all users, or at least for non-admins. You could either do this through CSS, or by modifying/reproducing the functionality defined at bp-groups.php groups_setup_nav().
As for the first question, there are WP plugins that allow you to restrict membership to invited members. A ten-second Google search turned up this: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-invites/, for example. I imagine that this would work fine for BP as well. The most straightforward way to populate groups would then be for the admin to use a plugin like BP Group Management http://teleogistic.net/code/buddypress/bp-group-management/, which allows admins to place people manually in groups, bypassing the invitation process.

ParticipantThanks for the tip Shaista,
I followed your instructions and it worked for me. My blog is in a sub-folder. Now avatar upload and crop works ok.
Seems a pain that we have to change the core BP code though!

ParticipantSo in my case I find the problem of why “upload avatar” doesn’t work.
It’s because of the BuddyPress Template pack plugin. When I use the bp default theme everything works perfectly.
When I use any wordpress theme that I made compatible with BuddyPress using the plugin bp Template pack I find exactly the same problem: Avatar Upload, private message, register… all of that doesn’t work… as soon as you click on the button “Submit” or “Crop” you go back to the same page and nothing happen?! It’s like the information wasn’t given at all…
There is a conflict somewhere that I can’t find!
Any Ideas???[EDIT] Ok I solved the problem!!!
Ok so if none of the solution you have in this topic works for you it’s probably because you have a conflict between a js script in your default theme and a js script in your wordpress theme… take a minute tu disable all the js action in your wordpress theme ton test if it’s coming from there…May 15, 2010 at 1:14 am #78237nessradio
ParticipantOk so now I know exactly what is goin on!
I’ve got a problem with the BuddyPress Template pack plugin. When it’s activated some of the form (upload avatar, resgiter, send privat message…) doesn’t work.
Any ideas?May 14, 2010 at 8:21 pm #78215nessradio

ParticipantGo to admin side of your blog then click from left menu Settings -> Miscellaneous Settings
Set “Store uploads in this folder” to “wp-content/uploads”.
Set “Full URL path to files” to the REAL FULL PATH of your uploads. e.g “http://yoursiteblog/wp-content/uploads”Go to wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-core/bp-core-avatars.php
Then change bp-core-avatars.php line 389Replace:
if ( !$path = get_option( ‘upload_path’ ) )
$path = WP_CONTENT_DIR . ‘/uploads’;With:
if ( !$path = get_option( ‘upload_path’ ) )
$path = WP_CONTENT_DIR . ‘/uploads’;
else $path = ABSPATH . $path;Note: Take care for quotes you must remove and again add by yourself, otherwise you will get Warning: Division by zero …
Hope it will work perfectly for image upload and crop issue.May 14, 2010 at 3:04 pm #78155nessradio
ParticipantI’ve got a similar problem and I tried all the solution present in this topic but none of them worked…

ParticipantTo be more precise:
– When I upload a pic to change my avatar: I see my pic with the crop function but as soon as I click on “crop” it brings me back to the upload page. When I go to the upload file on my FTP I can find the pic I just uploaded.– When I upload a pic to my album: When I click to “Upload picture” it brings me back directly to the same page without doing anything and when I go to my upload file on my FTP I can’t find the pic I tried to upload.
– When I send a private message: I compose the message with all the information. When I click on “send” it brings me back to the “compose” section… it’s like I never wriht one. When I go to the “Sent Message” section I don’t see any message sent…
any idea of what is goin on?

ParticipantI am also unable to create any groups on my installation. Details:
1. Ubuntu 10.04 fresh install dedicated to WPMU+BP only, on a corporate intranet.
2. WP-MU 2.9.2, BP 1.2.3, + LDAP user authentication.
3. Site blog uses BP default theme, user blogs use Kubrick.
4. No other plugins enabled.
5. From “groups” tab, click on “Create a Group”, which takes me to “site/groups/create/step/group-details/”. After entering Group Name and Group Description, clicking on “Create Group and Continue ->” just takes me back to /group-details/, Step 1, as if I had hit the refresh button instead of “Create Groups and Continue”.
6. Have verified that after every attempt, the wp_bp_groups table in the MySQL database is empty.Any ideas?
EDIT: forgot to mention, WPMU is set up for subdirectory blogs (“blogs.corp.lan/blogname”). User account authentication, blog creation, etc., work just fine, as well as BP user activity, mentions. But user private messages don’t work (separate issue, it appears).

I’m guessing that I need to move some buddypress files so hostgator can find them or is this like in certain programs where I have to locate them manually for them to be recognized? Thanks any help would be great.

ParticipantRay! I have just installed your oembed plugin and it is working fine on my forums on buddypress!
Is there any way to resize the youtube video size which embeds through your plugin?
Perhaps some way of centering it on the forum page?
here’s the link:

ParticipantSound Great Ray,
I noticed it in private messaging, on the sidebar that tells you you are logged in and when posting a comment. If we could leave the name on the registration form that is fine but I just want the username displayed on all front end stuff that the user can contribute to.
The main reason for this is to stop people from pretending to be other users.
I really appreciate this and if anyone notices where else the names need changing then let us know! Cheers RAY!

KeymasterI just talked things over with Andrea; I’ll be releasing a plugin shortly with the code snippets posted above.
I’ll add private message username overrides as well. Is there any other place where display names are used? However, I do see some benefit with leaving the “Name” field on the registration page. The name gets displayed on a BP profile – eg. http://testbp.org/members/andy/profile/.
Also Twitter does something similar; they add the “Name” field to the sidebar of each profile.
FYI, first name, last name and nickname fields are not added to the registration page unless you manually created them as xprofile fields. Look at testbp.org’s registration page for an example: http://testbp.org/accounts/
