    Private and hidden forum posts do not show up in the forums directory regardless of your logged in state. This will probably change in the future but there was not enough time for 1.1.

    There is a bug that will not allow you to post on private and hidden group forums in 1.1, this is fixed in trunk and will be in 1.1.1 which will be out soon.

    Erich, I’m guessing that private and hidden topics will be shown to the logged-in user if they have permission to view them, otherwise just public topics will be shown.

    probably I do not understand this discussion, but I would think that “private” and “hidden” Forum-topics shoud NOT show-up within the public “Forum Topic Directory” !

    Please clarify.

    Hey guys,

    New install of WPMU 2.8.4a and BP 1.1 via web plugin installer.

    Everything seems to be working brilliantly, the new installer of BBpress was so easy that I had to check the file structure in CyberDuck to even believe that it was done. That used to be such a massive pain, thanks guys!

    However, as is my way, I’ve managed to find fault with it. It seems that all the wires work well, as do the group forums – provided the group is public. The Private and Hidden group classes fail to post in the group forum. Even a Group that was built as Public and can use it’s forum, if changed to Private or Hidden loses the ability to post (in addition the posts made with the group was public disappear). If the Group is changed back to Public, forum functionality is restored, and the previous posts are visible again.

    Thouhts?

    Thanks guys!

    The current version of bp-contents is not compatible with BuddyPress v1.1. I know that Burt was making some significant improvements to his plugin, waiting for v1.1 to come out before he released it.

    I would suggest that you contact him via BuddyPress private messaging and see what he says about a timeline.

    @djpaul: I know, I know…sorry :-( I would start my page with an invisible group for beta testers this week, and exactly this feature doesnt work ^^

    Ya. I’m amazed you guys are even still on the forum. LOL. You should be out celebrating and/or taking a week off.

    madloki, he’s just released a major new version of BuddyPress 2/3 days ago. Any further release – unless there’s a genuine critical bug found, and this isn’t one – I expect will be quite a few weeks at the very least.

    Obviously a trunk code fix will happen as soon as Andy or someone else contributes a fix.

    Posted this under ticket https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/1149

    Thanks andy, is there any timeline for the bug?

    Thank you.

    That does not bother me if it does not show up on the directory. If there is a way, if you have the right permissions, it would show up in the directory, but it is not necessary.

    I will debug this. Only forum posts on public groups will show on the directory.

    Okay, I looked around the forum to see if I could find the answer first, but I could not find it.

    I am running Wpmu 2.8.4a, BBpress 1.0, and Buddypress 1.1

    I have groups set up. The public ones work fine, but when I try to create a topic for the private ones, I get an error. I suspect the same thing would happen in hidden ones too. The error says that there is an error creating topics. I look in my database and it shows that the topics are created, but there is no topic in the groups. Is it that we can’t create forums for the private and probably hidden ones?

    Is there something I can to fix this problem or am I stuck to just creating public groups if I want forum topics to show up?

    Thanks..I’ll try this (and hope it works in BP 1.1. Without being able to protect the site, as much as I like BuddyPress, its essentially worthless for use in private communities…I sure hope someone comes up with plugin for 1.1.

    Hey, I have been having the same problem! I found a partial solution to this in a previous post, but it only makes certain specified ‘slugs’ private, and not the entire site. Is there anyway we can modify this code to make it privatize the whole site?

    the code is located in bp-custom.php in the mu-plugins folder.

    //this makes directories private

    function oci_restrict_access(){
    global $bp, $bp_unfiltered_uri;

    if (!is_user_logged_in() &&
    (BP_MEMBERS_SLUG == $bp_unfiltered_uri[0] ||
    BP_FORUMS_SLUG == $bp->current_component ||
    BP_GROUPS_SLUG == $bp->current_component ||
    BP_HOME_BLOG_SLUG == $bp->current_component)){

    bp_core_redirect( get_option('home') . "/wp-login.php" );
    }
    }
    add_action( 'wp', 'oci_restrict_access', 3 );

    any help would be great!

    I am also getting “There was an error when creating the topic” however the topics are being written to the database fine. This only seems to be happening when a group is set to ‘private’ or ‘hidden’.

    When the group setting is changed to ‘public’, all of the posts in the database for that group appear and the error is not shown when making new posts.

    If the group is public then the forum posts show up in the Forums Directory, if they are private or hidden they do not – which is expected – however the tags for hidden or private posts show up in the ‘forum topic tags list’ – not to serious though.

    I’m looking for the best (i.e. most BP compatible) WP theme out-of-the-box. Many themes contain spurious sidebars,etc. My plan is to create a landing page that hands-off to a private site using just BP’s profile page.

    Is there any way of setting up privacy for users’ listings. Something like a checkbox where user can specify to have their profile public or private? By this I mean the profile will not show in any search results, groups’ members and only friend would have access to view it.

    Thanks for your help.

    On my research of possible underpinnings for a site we are intending to build I came across BuddyPress, and I’m considering it as a viable alternative to Drupal, which would have been my first choice.

    We would need the commonplace components of a social site like user profiles with custom fields, image galleries (does BP have these already ?? – I saw some mention of it in the 1.0 roadmap but haven’t yet located them in the demo site), private messaging, a forum and even more

    Nevertheless, the recent discussion over at wpmu.org about WP MU being discontinued and the low development activity on WP MU in general made me think if BuddyPress is built on a rather fragile padding.

    Is it considered sensible to build a professional grade community upon a BP foundation yet? I am aware of GigaOM Pro et al. but still need a clue of how much in-house development and sysadmining work they do to keep BP afloat.

    Any insights?

    I’m using version 1.0.3 and when I set up a group and click to invite others, nobody shows up in the list where I can invite them. I have 20 or more people who are my contacts, and the group invite doesn’t show anybody I can invite, whether or not my group is public or private.

    I have no idea why this is happening. Can anybody help?

    Thanks

    As this thread was three weeks old before you posted today, and it was already marked as resolved, please start a new thread. Most people who provide assistance will simply ignore threads marked as resolved, preferring to spend time on threads where help is still required.

    Also, Matt may or may not see that his 3-week old thread has new activity. So, if you want an answer from him as well, your best bet will be to contact him via private messaging.

    Hi guys

    I just I just installed WPmu & Buddypress and Im good to go.

    Thing is Im not sure if what my client wants can be done with Buddypress.

    Here is what he wants:

    Basically an advertising website where bands, actors etc can sign up and have there own page/blog where they advertise themselves, post links to videos/mps of themselves performing. They need to pay (via paypal) before they can sign up but possibly have the first month free.

    KInd of like myspace but without the interaction, comments etc.

    Also all members can post to a message board also although I dont see the point in this if they have their own pages, which i must mention to the client.

    I dont need alot of the things in BP like private messages etc.

    Is this all possible and any hints on getting started? I cant find a decent manual anywhere for BP.

    Any help much appreciated.

    John

    Hi – A user has created a blog and marked it as public, however, it is not showing in the blog feed.

    I accessed the site from within the BP Dashboard and it is set to private. If I select public and click on update, I get “Do you really want to do this” and nothing happens.

    I’m still running RC1 version of BP and have not updated the version of Mu either.

    [reposted now that Andy has set up the gallery forum]

    WordPress blog since 2006, bbPress forum added in 2008, and now a BuddyPress community. To start with we’re only using extended profiles and private messaging, but will layer in additional features over time.

    Very grateful for the powerful platform that Andy and team have created, and for the great support offered by Burt, JJJ, Jeff and all the others on the forum. And of course, _ck_ and others over at the bbPress forum.
