This thread is pretty old, especially since there have been many changes to BP over the 7 months since it was first started. But, there are some good hints about what you can do.

Please remember that the bp-custom.php file should be placed in /wp-content/plugins/ and not /mu-plugins/ as is mentioned early on in the thread. When the thread was first started, that location was correct. But not anymore.

I have buddypress on a subdomain. I want only registered members to access the site, non-registered visitors should get a registration page. Is there a plugin for this?

It appears that this might have something to do with that private/public options of blocking search engines. I signed up with a dummy account and upon registrtation selected to block, and it didn’t show on my user page. I went in and changed the option to not block search engines and then it showed. I tried that on the blog in question, but no luck.

I’ve put all my website as private. You can make that happen. But then you won’t get any traffic from google. It’s all a matter of how private you want it to be.

    Hi

A member created an account (and a profile) on the copy of BuddyPress I installed a few months ago. Today I get a frantic email telling me that their profile was showing up on Google and I was asked to remove it.

When I logged in as admin, I was able to visit their profile and navigate to “Profile/Public”. I assume that the information this member provided in their profile was supposed to be public and that they would have known when they added the information that it was public. Yes?.

I’ve typed their name/email into Google and I can see a LOT of other profiles and places where they created an account, added profiles and posted various things so I’m guessing that most profiles are supposed to be “public” and that this is normal?.

I’d also like to know if there is a built-in (or plugin) method of making profiles private if possible as well as how to deal with this particular member.

Finally, which file would I need to edit in order to change “Profile” to “Public Profile” on the sign-up page?.

Any help is greatly appreciated as I have no idea what to do now.

UPDATE: After the initial 50 or so sign-ups that occurred when the BuddyPress script went up, everything came to a screeching halt and I have noticed that accounts are gradually disappearing. Today, I looked at my public chat logs and discovered why. Members are deleting their accounts because they are concerned about their privacy and especially their profile details showing up in Google.

    Thank you, Birdy

Thanks for testing and creating the ticket, BeLogical. ^.^

No, not running More Privacy Options or any other plugins that manage privacy :)

Hi, is it possible to use something other than username is the user’s profile URL? We’d like to keep usernames relatively private and would not like them as part of any URL. In fact, we’d like to basically hide all mention of the usernames people use to log in with. Thanks!

Hi welshpixie – is there a chance you’re using More Privacy Options for WP? You might want to see the following https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/more-privacy-options-private-blogs-and-activity-streams

Could be a bug. Would someone confirm this on http://testbp.org/

    Hi there.

We recently upgraded from 1.0 to 1.1.1, running WPMU 2.8.4a. We upgraded by the book – deactivated buddypress plugin, upgraded, reactivated, etc. Everything is fine, except that any blog posts made to a private blog now show up on the sitewide activity feed. The blogs are still listed as private in the database tables and they aren’t showing on users’ profiles or in the sitewide directory of blogs. We’ve tried deactivating and reactivating the BP plugin. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

This is a followup to a post that I don’t think was resolved: http://buddypress.org/forums/topic/private-message-issue-mulitple-receipents-email-notification-empty-content#post-7103

Essentially: the link to messages in email notifications do not go to the message thread.

The reason the links are not working are possibly because of an error in the bp code.

In the function messages_notification_new_message() (in bp-messages-notifications.php),

    line 15 says:

    $message_link = site_url() . ‘/’ . BP_MEMBERS_SLUG . ‘/’ . $ud->user_login . ‘/messages/view/’ . $message->id;

This is incorrect. Instead of having $message->id at the end, it should be putting in the *THREAD_ID*.

If I change this to the thread-id, then the link successfully goes to the message thread. Otherwise it doesn’t work.

Can someone experienced in the buddypress code please confirm this? Or am I doing something wrong/mis-understanding something?

    Thanks!

Another idea is to have all non-group-specific forums belong to a sort of invisible, public group that everyone on the site is a member of. That way, anyone could post to the forum, and its topics would show up in the forum directory as you’d expect.

The trick would be to get that group not to appear on group directories, both public and individual, since the group would be nothing more than a shell for public forums and thus wouldn’t have any other content worth listing on people’s group and activity pages. It’d be easy enough to add a piece of metadata to each group that determined whether it should be listed in directories (independently of the public/private/hidden distinction). The problem is that groups are listed in lots of different places in BP, and you’d have to hijack each one of them in order to filter for this metadata. Such a plugin would be a pain to build and to maintain, I expect, as group lists are posted in more and different places throughout BP.

I am planning to create a network of student members. Can the members here (Andy?) tell me if what I am planning is possible with BP 1.1?

All the members joining the network will both teach others and learn from others. So each member would be stating stuff like (in their profile details):

I Can teach (profile question): Calculus (Beginner), Algebra (Intermediate), Physics (K-12) (subjects chosen from a drop-down or typed into a text box)

Want to Learn: Spanish (Intermediate), French (Advanced)

One of the main features of the network would be to find other people who could teach us any of the subjects we want to learn and at the same time want to learn one of the subjects that we can teach (let’s define this as ‘compatible’ students). This is where my customized search feature comes in. I would like to create a function (like a button a user can use, not a *manual* search based on the profile details) wherein the student would be able to see a list of other compatible students in the network. Is it possible to create such a customized search (or other functions like this) using BP 1.1?

One example of other functions is: Once a student finds another compatible student, they can get a private discussion thread and finally when the lessons are over, each student should be able to rate the other student for the particular subject he learnt from the other.

I am a new member trying to see if BP is for me. Please do let me know if such things are possible. Thanks in advance.

There is only one official site for BuddyPress discussion and that is this site.

bp-dev.org is a private site run by one of our moderators–Nicola Greco. He started it after he personally created several, early plugins for BuddyPress. I believe it served as an early plugin repository before BuddyPress plugins were hosted on WordPress.org.

I’m not aware of any captcha plugins for this, but it’s a good idea. I haven’t time to look into the code atm.

Is there any way to enable captcha or something similar on BP private messaging?

That’s where I’m seeing more and more abuse lately. Somehow sploggers register with my site, then PM all the users with kiddie porn links. It’s really bad.

I don’t quite have a handle on how they’re doing this. There must be some sort of evil script that goes through the member directory and messages member after member. Have other people seen this, and, if so, any suggestions on how to combat it?

Just a quick update. I’ve been waiting for BP v1.1 to come out so that I could tweak the Privacy Component code were needed. I plan on sending Andy my component next week. After the two of us have had some time to kick it around, I will release it for private alpha. That should be soon!

What about the ability to send blinks to other users profiles? (I’ve seen this in multiple communities).

You visit a profile and click a link saying “Send Blink”. You then get to choose between multiple messages like:

    – Blink to Profile

    – Smile to Profile

    – Wink to Profile

    – Hug Profile

    – Give flowers to Profile ect. :)

And to chosse if this Blink should be “Publicly” or “Privately”. If Publicly it would be added to the Activity Streams.

Let’s please keep this discussion to the public forums and not in private messaging. You will get better results with multiple people looking at this thread.

Okay, one more time, please answer these questions.

    @ Erich:

Just mind reading Andy.. but I’m guessing you have to be logged in as well as a member to see the latest “hidden” topics.

“Private and hidden forum posts do not show up in the forums directory regardless of your logged in state. This will probably change in the future but there was not enough time for 1.1.”

    @Andy,

why do you want to change this in the future ? I do not see a logic in making Private and Hidden Forum-posts showing-up in publicly visible “Forum Topic Directory”.

If it does, then “Private-Groups” are not private anymore……
