Sorry for my bad english i hope you understand me.
As i know when somebody register in buddypress, there are 2 fields, Display Name and Username, and that fields in the WordPress Profiles use to be Username, First Name, Last Name and both names make the Nickname Field, that was before i upgrade to BP 1.5.5 now the name in the BP fiields just gives the Nickname to the WP Profile, and if a user chage its Display Name on BP, the Nickname get erased and the WP Profile and the user have no name on bb Forums and if i need to do something in the WP Profiles i have to give them a Name or a Nickname and choose the field “Display name publicy as” to get a user have a name in bbForums and in WP, im shure its a bug but i dont know how to find it and fix it.
Thanks so much for your help! I have begun to explore the drop down menu strategy, however I don’t know how I will manually enter 230,000 schools into the drop down field. Is there a way to do this quickly? For example, perhaps I can just upload the entire list somehow? Thanks again!
Hello, im going to tell you a quick easy way to do step number 1.
Create a field called School or w.e you want to make it and make a drop down field of all the schools that you can think of.
I would also download buddyprress-better-directory ( it may not scale well with your theme depending on what theme you are using )
so now onto question number 2. As I said for your answer for number one, using the drop down menu for the schools will make it easier to search rather then having the members type in their school. as far as searching for UNC and University of North Carolina, Im sure the search would list all the UNC first, then list the University of North Carolina,
I would also suggest installing s2Members (plugin) and follow the steps to help make your buddypress/wordpress more secure,
@vuiet914
Best of Luck,
Ps, this is just a suggestion and it really isn’t a FULL answer to your questions.
Hello! I am a WordPress newbie trying to create a social networking site for a niche group with Buddypress. I would like my users to be able to display all colleges/universities attended on their profile, and for other users to be able to search for other members based on this information. I have two questions:
1) I have a list of ~230,000 colleges/universities. Assuming this information can live somewhere on my WP site, is there a plugin that will automatically detect the name of the school a user enters and then auto fill the field so that it matches the school’s ‘standard’ name on the list? LinkedIn has a function like this, but I have no idea how it works on the back end.
2) Is it even necessary that the school field be standardized as described above in order for users to successfully search for other members? For example, if one user reports that they attended “UNC” and another reports “University of North Carolina,” will the first user be as searchable as the second?
I really would like to be able to compel users to use the standard names for consistency’s sake, but I’m not sure if it’s possible in Buddypress.
Apologies if these questions are unclear or misguided. I am a total beginner! Thanks for your help!
I like this plugin, yet I am having some difficulties with it. First off, the reviews are not working. I attempted to enter a review and I kept getting errors telling me there was a problem entering my review. It appears to be a Buddypress issue. I see the last review entered to be about 9 months ago.
Here is my problem with this plugin: If one of my search fields is a radio button, and then a member begins the search and clicks on the radio button, then cannot clear the button.
The second issue is that when one of the profile fields is a multi-select box, some of the searches work, and some of them do not work. It seems to a systemic problems. I have played around with all the advance settings this issue is not fixed.
The site I am working on is http://rotarymeansbusiness.com. Go there and you will see the issues.
I turned off all plugins except BuddyPress, but my results are the same. I checked settings, permalink, etc., but the only thing that’s working is user registers, but profile is not created, user is not redirected to profile, and none of the pages are being created. I added fields to profile page and the fields did not display. Can someone help please? Thanks!
Good Morning,
I wonder if anyone has any suggestions as I am struggling to find a plugin but may be searching on the wrong terms.
In a nutshell I’m trying to create ‘private’ fields on a users profile. So when they register to join the site, they complete certain questions which would be part of the ‘request to join’ process rather than the profile. Those fields would only be viewable by the user and the site Admins.
Once the profile is completed the user would automatically be joined to a general group and then an Admin would reassign them to another group once processing the application.
Any help would be very much appreciated,
Thank you !
@jaimebib nope still no luck for me I have basically given up on this plugin since I cannot seem to reach the author of the plugin..
@Marcella any news on the idea you had for developing the plugin?
I’d approach this a different way –
something like:
`
$match_ids = $wpdb->get_var( “SELECT user_id FROM wp_bp_xprofile_data WHERE field_id = [whatever the field_id is for State] AND value = [whatever value you want to find] “);
`
$match_ids will be a simple array.
So loop thru the array and create a comma separated string out of the ids.
Then pass the string to bp_has_members() using ‘include’
something like
`
//$get_these_members is the id string you created
$get_these_members = ‘include=’ . substr($get_these_members, 0, -1); //trim the last comma
if ( bp_has_members( $get_these_members ) )
`
That way you could search for any value on any profile field.
Your approach might work, but… yikes.

i’m looking for the same things to do with my site.
did you find a solution for that?
@bojan85 tried to work with this plugin aswell but seems non functional..anybody involved in developing for bp who knows if this is even possible to do? Seems like a very basic function that should be included…
OMG, this is almost what i need
do you already have it working @davidveldt ?
what i need is:
you have the registrationform, the only things i want visible is Name and Email. and then i would like to have a selectbox with 2 options: Company or Student.
When you register as a company and then login you go to the company profile side. if you are a student then you go to the student profile side. The 2 profile have different profile groups to fill out.
how can i do this?
Not sure how to ensure that it doesn’t conflict. Here’s the EE profile-loop.php page below… Since I’m a bit new to this, I could certainly copy the original profile-loop.php file into the child theme, but am a bit concerned about me just pasting this new code into it as I don’t know how to identify conflicts other than it not working etc.
`
<div class="bp-widget “>
`
The other option I’ve been toying with is creating the State values: as Idaho_state ( more specific search term )
Then display state as “Idaho” ( in the profile ) with some php:
if value “Idaho – ID”
echo “Idaho”
I’m working on a member directory.
I’m interested in creating a search that queries ONLY a certain field ‘State’ and value ‘Idaho’.
I’m wondering if I can pass this to the search via the url?
Ex.
/members/s?field=State&value=Idaho
A search for Idaho shows the members in Idaho,
but it also displays anyone that has entered ‘Idaho’ in their profile.
I need to develop a more rigid search based on the field ‘State’.
Is it possible for admins to view full profiles including all custom profile fields of
users who have not verified/activated their accounts.
I have managed to disable auto sending of activation emails after registration so
admins can have a look at the new user first and trigger the activation email – effectively
approving the new users. However my client has asked to be able to view the full profile
so they can better decide if the user should be approved. They want to check that all custom profile
fields have been filled out correctly.
Is there any way of doing that?
Thanks
Hi,
Is there a way to get a pdf upload in the profile field? i’ve found a blog for images but it doesn’t work for pdf files (http://alextheafrican.wordpress.com/2012/03/10/how-to-add-an-image-field-to-buddypress-extended-profile-fields/)
I would suggest creating a new profile field group for this sort of field, and put some logic into the appropriate theme template to not show fields in that group.
I’d be interested in this as well.
This is exactly what I have been trying to find an answer to. No one has seemed to provide a straight answer but this goes a long way. Thanks guys. I think I will reference this and work on this problem myself, too, and provide some feedback.
I think (not sure!) that one of the ways you can stop spam is to put required fields on the profile that utilize human input. Requiring fields like favorite color, or something where people have to actually input something may be helpful to slow down spam. At least, that’s a theory. Anyone have anything like that or provide some feedback on this theory?
Assuming I have the list in an excel worksheet, I would like to know if it is possible to add that feature to my registration page.
I have a custom form that I’m using to update user meta data with but it’s not jiving with Buddy Press.
Here’s the code I have in to update…
`
update_user_meta( $current_user->ID, ‘first_name’, $new_first_name );
`
Where “$new_first_name” is the value entered in the form.
It’s not working on the email or password fields either… where I have the following…
`$args = array(
‘ID’ => $current_user->id,
‘user_email’ => esc_attr( $entry )
);
wp_update_user( $args );
`
These things work on other non-buddypress sites, so I’m thinking it has to be how BP stores the member info.
I’m using this to populate the form with the user’s information…
`
$ud = get_userdata( bp_displayed_user_id() );
$current_user_data = $ud->first_name;
`
That works.
Does anyone know the function call to update the user data?
Go with Paul’s second suggestion, you could make it a simple text input and instruct the user to add items comma separated and then grab the field and run an explode function on the comma to get a list you can loop over and display.
I don’t know about date range, but for your dropdown box, you would have to manually build that list of universities yourself.
The easiest would be for you to create multiple profile fields (job 1, job 2…) and prompt users to leave blank if not appropriate.
Another approach is to use a text area (one job per line), and then customise the output of this particular field to display how you wanted it to.
xprofile wasn’t built with the idea of letting *users* (vs admins) creating new profile fields. I think trying to do this would be full of difficulty so I’d recommend against it.
