Participanthttp://testbp.org/forums is the better place to look instead of http://testbp.org/bbpress/
Just enable forums component in BuddyPress. Bugle Notes is using the default theme for BP (with some CSS tweaks). If you download BuddyPress 1.1.3 and use the default theme provided with the download, your forum will look the same.
Testbp.org is using a new theme created for BP 1.2 (not yet released yet).

ParticipantIt doesn’t seem too bad as far as wikis go (reasonable amount of features, not too cluttered with whatever theme we’re running) but the integration with Blackboard is quite lacking, mostly in the group management department, which is exactly where i’m hoping we can improve things by using BuddyPress.

ParticipantAwesome wp themes? Try googling.
Also, converting a normal wp theme to a bp theme isn’t that easy, it adds a few folders and a lot of extra template files. And yes, if you know how to make bp/wp themes, you can design above average and do some coding; you could make a site like tdi volkswagen.
Today Andy will release the newest buddypress parent theme, you might wanna check that out too.

ParticipantOkay So, I’ve created a new child theme and moved all of my files from my original theme into this new BP-Child Theme. I merged the css as best I could and when I hit the preview button I’m getting there errors:
Warning: main(/clothdiaperingmommy.com/wp-content/themes/bp-sn-parent/tools/breadcrumbs.php) [function.main]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /clothdiaperingmommy.com/wp-content/themes/bp-cdmmy-child/functions.php on line 30

How do i fix these errors so I can get my new child theme to work with. If I understand correctly, it should have all Buddypress functionality from bp-sn-parent and all the function of my original theme that I’ve copied into this child theme.
Thanks

ParticipantOkay, So If I understand eveyrone’s posts properly, The “best practice” would be to move all of my original themes styles, php files, and functions into a buddypress child theme. Thus ensuring the future-proofness of my buddypress functions.
I’ll do that… as best I can and Let you all know how it works.
December 11, 2009 at 10:40 pm #58520In reply to: Themeing Best Practices (Question)
@mercime
Participant@foodin65 – You could make your main site’s theme into a BP child theme to make it easier to get the functionalities you want in your site and make it future-proof. Given that Andy has coded the BP Parent Theme with dynamic and multiple body classes as well as other styling hooks within the body content, you could target certain sections of the site with different layouts, it makes a lot of sense.
With child themes, updating BuddyPress is almost seamless. You would only need to add or update some selectors and/or declarations in style.css instead of having to find out almost each and every new BP feature and updating them in your WP-turned-BP theme files plus style.css.

ParticipantHi Marius,
a question related to BP-Events-plugin:
is the Events-plugin now running smoothly without any major bugs ? Will it work with the new BP 1.2 default-theme ?
I have checked the website of Erwin, but still not sure whether this plugin is fine to use in working-environments.
Appreciate your feedback.

ParticipantYou just need another theme for BP activated on the BP blog. That’s the terminology you’re looking for.

Participanttechnically, simply duplicate the theme, and change the infos in the style.css … so they do not have the same name… tada, you can customize the one for your other part.

David Lewis
ParticipantWhat is the thinking behind deprecating the hook and recommending a template edit? I would think that if someone is using the default theme and only wants to add a single link to the header… it might be better to do is using the hook and the functions.php file… rather than have to duplicate an entire template in the child? Just wondering.

ParticipantUpdating my previous post, if anyone is curious, a wikimedia styled wordpress theme was just released. Combined with my earlier plugin, you could already make a wordpress wikimedia for a normal install.
You can download it here.

ParticipantI had a website using Thesis as theme. When BuddyPress was released, I wanted to have a matching Theme that would inherit all the functionality I already had.
That’s what this theme does.
The widgetized home page is a page template. You need to create a page, select the template in that page, and then configure your WP installation to show that page as a “static front page”.

ParticipantLooks good Detective — are there specific benefits to using Thesis integration, in terms of your Buddypress sites, or was it more that you were familiar working with Thesis?

Participantbp-invitefriends is not activated yet, I still need to style it to match bp-defaut…I ported it over on a different theme. I probably just use the templates from the original and see how well they hold up.
As far as bp-events, I would suggest wp repository, that’s what I have installed on the Sandbox. I had set up a trac for it on my Dreamhost account, but they completely destroyed it while they “Upgraded” their services. I upgraded too and moved to HostGator, what a headache that was. In any case Erwin has setup a trac on his site I believe and he is continuing development.
My time is very limited, so I have to pick carefully what I do and not do. The basic strucure for bp-events works great and that was my intent to develop. With a bit of help from the community that plugin should reach a greater height.
By the way…I stopped by jobsee.kr. Great play on words and a nice design. I like the logo as well. So thumbs up.

ParticipantIt looks great. Does this Andy character sleep? As he obviously isn’t planning a Christmas holiday:
“I will probably play with a few child themes over Xmas and produce some new color schemes with a bit more ‘flair’.”
Just wondering if the members/blogs/groups will be in a sn-parent theme that we can grab if we already have a custom theme? … as the functionality is much better than in the old theme.
Cheers for all your hard work.

ParticipantWhat if you used the buddymatic framework??? Will the new BP default theme change things much for your child theme? As I like the consistency of the groups/members/blogs pages.

ParticipantYes, you need to buy Thesis.
But you can also modify this theme to suit another theme. I have a test installation using Tarski and it works ok.
You don’t need to customize/modify anything in Thesis.

ParticipantI love the new theme! I am so glad that you all paid attention to this because I know that this was a major stumbling bloack for many of us early adopters. I cant’ wait to see the fbconnect functions added back in.

ParticipantMarius I also want to thank you for your help. You and Erwin are to be commended for bp-events which in my opinion should be a core BuddyPress function. I hope that all of the functions that were once in that plugin make there way back in. I also have the latest version running and it help smooth out some of the wonks with my theme.
