    @jeff

I appreciate the feedback and perspective. What’s weird is I built a modular php/mysql site circa 2002 basically overusing includes, very basic css and taking functionality from Hotscripts.com’s PHP repository. In fact, what I liked about php was the modularity of what I was doing (even if a bit sloppy). BP/Wordpress seems to promise the same, but frankly the number of sites that deviate from the structure of the standard theme is small (maybe it’s too new). It’s like the complexity of the theme structure has scared people off or the fact that the themes are both style and functionality makes it difficult to be modular.

I’m hard-headed and have no hurried timeline – I’m designing for myself. I’ll probably take this on and suffer the pain of BP’s infancy just like I did in 2002. That was my education. What would be helpful is a methodology for taking on something like this.

My threshhold question is whether to use a theme framework as a starting point or whether that’ll be too restrictive and I just need to bite the bullet and build my own theme. I’d be on the hook for updates (sucks), but it sounds like it may save some pain. My limited understanding of actions/filters is that I should be able to build almost anything from a good theme framework using functions.php and style.css, etc., but not sure if that’s true or whether it’s worth pain of learning that way of developing instead of just tearing apart templates.

I’m sure, by the time I’m done there’ll be dozens of modular BP themes/frameworks to choose from. That’s what happened after I slaved over the site in 2002. Who knew WP was there with plugins for most of the stuff I hardcoded myself.

I’m having a similar issue. All the links in the Buddypress bar that link URL/wp-admin/~~ work such as most under My blogs admin but under My account all the links that include URL/members/~~ don’t work. The only one that works here is Log Out. There is no members directory so it just defaults to the homepage. I’m sure there is something simple I missed but can’t for the life of me find it. I uninstalled and reinstalled Buddypress and it’s the only plugin installed. I’m running buddypress 1.1.1 using the default theme installed through the c-panel.

is it possible to replace the crappy cropping tool of 1.0.3 without upgrading to 1.1

Anything is possible if you have the coding skills. But, your best option is to upgrade to BP 1.1.1.

What is the issue you are having with upgrading? Just theme issues? Or, as you stated above, are you concerned about losing the core file modifications that you’ve made?

You should never–did I say never yet–modify any core files. Instead, make your custom mods in your own plugin file or in bp-custom.php file.

    Hello to all,

we released new version of Buddypress Multilingual.

It works out of the box with Buddypress themes (tested with BuddyPress Default Home Theme 1.0.3).

Next week we are going to see if migration to Buddypress 1.1 will require any adjustments and test it more on guest blogs.

@Erich73: we added switching on the fly. Thanks for suggestion.

The default child is nothing more than a stylesheet… essentially. And a bunch of icons. It may be just as much work either way. I’m not sure. I haven’t tried to adapt any existing WP themes. I just made a new theme based on the child. I didn’t change a whole lot though.

The problem with using the default child theme as a base for a new theme is that it is much more work. Rather than fit the thousands of WordPress themes into the default child theme, it seems easier to fit the needed BuddyPress features into the style of the many, many WordPress themes being produced for free or commercially.

Why not start by copying the child theme that comes with BuddyPress and go from there?

The more I read these posts, the more I’m thinking that BP themes are trying to serve two purposes and some people want one.

If you want a BP site, then the BP theme framework could be “childed” and you’re good. If you want a heavly modified solution like TastyKitchen.com, it seems that you are stripping the functionality of the BP theme and integrating it into a Child or your WP theme. In fact, for a CMS implementation, you might not even want the functions in the same templates as they exist in the BP theme.

To accomplish this, it seems Detective and others are saying you need to create a parent whose skin/functionality is based on a WP theme and whose additionally functionality is based on BP. When childed, this parent can supply the framework for the child which will inherit functionality from the parent and look/feel from it’s own CSS and functions. WIth Theme Hybrid, functions.php would be used to determine what info actually showed up in child and the CSS would determine how it looked.

The downside to all of this seems to be that we now have a combined BP/WP parent which could be awkward to upgrade particularly if there is substantial template overlap. Unless I’m mistaken this will need to be a future release issue.

Then again, I’m a noob and don’t know the complexities of BP or Hybrid.

Bottom line, You must delete /wp-content/bp-themes. make sure you have moved the /bp-themes to /wp-content/themes/

You just activate BuddyPress and you have all the functions at your disposal. Just like any other plugin. Then you look for the function you want to use and paste it into your template where you want its content to appear. There’re a few functions in the codex, but I prefer to just look through the theme/plugin files…

    #4 is resolved too.

So my biggest headache is the cropping tool.

As a workaround I removed the abillity to upload an avatar/profile picture during registration since it uploaded a black box.

User are able to upload and crop an avatar but virtually every single one is complainging about that function. Multiple issues.

I tried to upgrade to 1.1 but it was too problematic. Got way too many errors all over the place. It’s tough to upgrade with a custom theme, especially when I have also modified core files. In the near future I’d like to offer an expert here a generous bounty to do the upgrade for me while maintaining all customizations of my theme. I have over a hundred active members now so hopefully this can be tested remotely, but I digress.

Question, is it possible to replace the crappy cropping tool of 1.0.3 without upgrading to 1.1 ? There must be others in my situation who are unable to upgrade to 1.1 but would like to get a better cropping tool.

    You’re welcome porceon.

Let me know how it goes, and don’t heistate to post your experiencies here.

As I told you I didn’t get to finish integrating, and I’ve to put in on hold, while I am working on someting else. So your experiments with this way of integration may turn helpful.

    Cheers.

I am having the same problem…

I changed the admin display name and lost the admin functions… as well as being able to see any plugins that are installed or being able to install new themes.

(a lot of functionality gone across the board)

I changed my nickname back to admin and tried to log back in and i am getting the same error.

Obviously there are a few big issues with your install causing all of these problems.

    8. Do you have any plugins other than BuddyPress installed and activated?
    Yes several of them.

Deactivate all plugins other than BuddyPress. Use the default theme that comes with BuddyPress 1.1.1. Do you still get these white screen problems?

Do you get anything in your webserver error log? A white screen error can be caused by lots of things. Finally, which company provides your hosting?

    Hi

This has been asked on several threads; please either try to search the forum or make a new thread. This one has been marked as ‘resolved’ by the original poster and is about 3 months old.

I did it with P2 and an Artisteer-theme. It’s pretty much finished.

Just integrated as per codex instructions (copied all the folders and some files from BP-theme).

    1. I called for another CSS in the header instead of in the actuall css file. Had problems with the latter.

    2. Didn’t register userbar/optionsbar. Integrated them into navbar or individual pages (all user settings was placed on “profile”). This wasn’t intended at first but was a great way of handling the horizontal space problem. P2 and my theme are intended for a width of about 900px. Without the vertical userbar/optionsbar you can make it fit into that small space.

    3. I made all the content fit by handling the CSS item “content” with a good width and overflow.

    4. This however made me have problems with the sidebar widgets that are hardcoded (please make them into widgets instead). I had to rip them out because they disturbed the layout.

    5. Had to do some additional skinning and handle a fixed amount of categories for the forums.

I just love how components.css did a lot of the work. Thanks a lot Andy!

i agree with Burt, modifying the searchform.php and search.php template files inside the default theme of BP with the custom search code shall do the trick like it did in WP and WPMU.

i’ll try it..infact i’ll try it now..will repot if it workss
