As @modemlooper points out, this is trivial to implement with a little PHP development knowledge.

s2member builds on top of the WordPress roles and capabilities system — so, in addition to the s2member wrapper functions, you can also use standard WP functions. Combine them with the BuddyPress API and you have a rich environment for creating code to handle access control to pages.

You can add your access / redirect logic in your theme’s header.php files, or even neater in an action function (in your functions.php file) — try hooking onto init, or bp-screens.

@FIQ – horizontal navigation tends to work well with a small set of options, but falls over for a flexible site with large numbers of screens / menu options / tabs. As you add more screens (photo albums, events, etc, etc.) you quickly run out of reasonable horizontal space to display the menu tabs. We’ve encountered this on a number of our builds.

Vertical navigation on a flexible (expandable) social site copes better with a large number / growth in menu options. It’s the approach that both Facebook (news feed / landing page) and Google+ take to cope with that situation.

It continues onto Facebook’s mobile app as well — where the menu button expands to a long vertical nav.

Of course, there are those who’ll cry out we shouldn’t copy Facebook — but, that kind of begs the answer “Why not? They’ll have invested considerably in analysing the UX issues / best practices – let’s learn from that.”

[EDIT: In any case, I trust the navigation and the actual content will be rendered via separate template parts – which should make it relatively straightforward (even for ‘default themers’) to present / locate the navigation where they best see fit.]

Not to beat a dead horse, but this is a great example of why vertical navigation doesn’t work. Look how small the content area is. I know it will change depending on the theme, but you have less than a 3rd of the page. Now how would images or video look in that? Not only very small, but it would also look like Times Square.

A fast solution in profile fields for the huddle theme…
Go to wp-content/themes/huddle/functions.php and open it.
At line 45 you should see
    ` $new_values[] = ‘‘ . $value . ‘‘; `
    change it with this
    ` $new_values[] = strip_tags( $value ); `
I bought this theme today, and i did not have time to beautify the code and the functions, but i will write again probably the next days.

It looks like you’re using a customized theme. That theme will probably need to be updated to add the new “capabilities.php” template.

Try to contact the theme dev and talk to them about copying:
    `/members/single/settings/capabilities.php`

from the bp-default theme to their theme.

@aronprins: Like the first look, nice and fresh. Also the login dropdown moves smoothly. Only thing I am missing is a clear call to action on the homepage. Goodluck with the further development!

Hi, maybe someone just can tell me how to programatically set a custom template instead of a given one? I need to change the activity loop template inside the user’s current theme (as a child theme would do) but my “product” would be a plugin, not a theme.

I can’t use filters since I don’t want to modify the dynamic content but the template php logic.

Please I hope someone could point me in the right direction… or give me some advice on what is the best practice for doing this if I’m thinking it wrong. Thanks a lot.

@shawn38 Thats one to add! Thanks :)

About the responsive part – im looking into making a ”fullfeatured webapp”. With that i mean fullscreen app, loadingscreens for iphone/ipad and a e.g facebook like interface.

I havent decided on that interface though, so feedback would be appreciated ;)
Anyone knows any good mobile webapp frameworks?
    Cheers,
    Aron

Edit: Function added and applied on http://www.modernmanipulator.com ;)

Just out of curiosity, is the theme responsive at all? If not then it would also be a cool addition to the feature list. Thanks! :-)

@aronprins Its looking better and better every time I check it out! Nice work Aron! :-) I would like to suggest a couple options. First option is to make the search form disappear for non-logged-in visitors. Second is to make the navigation menu not appear for non-logged-in visitors. These options should be something that an admin can select via the back-end. Anyway it just a couple things I think would make this theme stand out from the crowd. Thanks! :-)

@mariareh64 to make your WP theme compatible with BP, you need to install the BP template pack plugin and go through Appearance > BP compatibility process. If you need assistance to fix alignment for Step 3 of the process, start a new topic with name of your theme as well as codes (post in pastebin.com) of your theme’s header.php, sidebar.php, index.php, page.php and footer.php and post the generated URL’s in your new post.

== When I click on a comment that I am notified of in an email (the link in the email) it goes to a blank page with only the header of the website ==

@radmacdaddy if you’re using a WP theme with BP Template Pack plugin, make sure that you have fixed alignment in all 16 BP template files. If all else fails, change to bp-default theme and check if issue is corrected there.

So other than a different skin, what new functionality does this theme have that lacks in bp-default? if its just a skin then good luck to ya? New functionality within the theme will get you further in your endeavors. Just saying!

You would normally add the code in your theme’s functions.php file

Its a plugin @modemlooper made and it works as specified with bp-default theme. It will work with other themes as well if your willing to put the time in to do it. I have learned that though it seamed people were unwilling to help me at one point they were actually trying to liberate me and I credit @rogercoathup for basically telling me to learn my way around the code. The people here are good folk but they also expect you to put time in and learn about the code and I highly respect that!

Regular sites work well on tablets. You can use a responsive theme or use buddy mobile. I’m working on next buddy mobile and it’s very app like. The current version is a mobile theme that mimics an app.
