Totally depends on where you want the values to appear! Are you using a custom theme you built, or something you purchased online? Can we get a sample of the URL that you want the data to appear on (change the domain if you want) and/or screenshots? Otherwise it’s hard to help blind.

Hey Hugo. I upload media all the time. The Mac Lab (including the blog) houses a huge collection of resources (about 70 GB) that I’ve created and successfully uploaded over the past 10 years. We’re gamifying the curriculum and hoping to use BuddyPress in conjunction with some custom plugins to provide students with real-time feedback as they complete projects, earning XP and virtual currency.

Anyway, the techie set up a sandbox for us to test the kids’ themes and plugins (Vincent is a key player in this) but we ran into the 403 as soon as I activated BuddyPress. The techie is quite knowledgeable about WP but not BP. He’s got loads more on his plate than just my site so I’m trying to help locate relevant info.

He’s also duplicated the issue at his end. He fixes permissions then any change in BP settings triggers the 403. He said he commented out some of the htaccess file and BP rewrote it. (I have no idea just exactly what he commented out.)

Have to run. Thanks for any additional help or direction in where I might look next!

Hi @mercime thanks for the reply. I tried disabling all plugins and I still get the problem with the topic_slug not being created correctly. I also tried putting it back to the default theme and still having the problem. Any other ideas?

BTW. If you’d like to read more about filters – this one’s a great one. While it’s focused on themes, it’s the exact same theory :)

@indieconnect the layout is working in my clean installation of atahualpa without using any configuration in theme options except for the CSS addition because adding style modifications in theme stylesheet does not change anything.

Did you copy everything I posted in pastebin.com and not just added the few at the bottom of header-buddypress.php or footer-buddypress.php for example? I ask because I’m seeing that your page source code has not changed to how it should be had you used the code I gave you. Know that these two files only affect the BP template pages and not your regular WP pages.

    I found the solution!!

For those of you in a similar situation here are the configurations that worked for me:

Mail From Plugin configured as such:
    Sender name (whatever you want)
User name (the part that appears before the @ in your email address)
Domain name (the part after the @ sign in your email address)

WP Mail SMTP Configured as such:
From email (your full email address)
    From name (whatever you want)
Mailer (Use the PHP mail() function to send emails)
Leave all SMTP options blank or checked No.

I am using Buddypress 1.5.5 with the Buddy Corporate theme and WordPress 3.3.1 with Hostmonster as my hosting provider.

I hope this helps someone else out there experiencing this frustrating problem!!

It’s a Gratitude theme issue, contact theme author. Change to bp-default theme in the meantime..

@chr313 no problem with periods or ellipsis [ … ] at end of Title of Group Forum Topic at all. Have you tried deactivating plugins or changing to bp-default theme to check if issue is corrected.

In reply to: Home on Menu

A couple of things. The permalink issue you are seeing might be caused by you trashing the /home page but not Permanently Deleting it. Check under the Pages menu to make sure you have destroyed all evidence of the page.

While you are there, create a page, call it “home” if you like, or “Welcome to my Awesome Website”, and don’t worry about the permalink.

Now go to Settings, Reading, and you’ll find options for setting up which page you want to establish as your home page. Choose the “Welcome to my Awesome Website” page as the Static page you want as your front page. This will make that page the one that appears when users go to your main domain. This would be an actual homepage (no subdirectory), rather than something that lived at domain.com/home.

You can then optionally go in a customize the menu that appears in your theme (depending on the theme: the BP default theme supports menus) In the Appearance menu, go to Menus, then create a menu using the options on that page, that will allow you to customize what people see on the top of the page. If you go to testbp.org, you’ll see a good example of a customized menu with “child” pages that dropdown from the main titles. Note that in that case the “Home” page is the blog, with the newest update rising to the top.

What theme are you using? What archive-slug did you assign to your Sitewide Forums – forums? Did you create a page named forums then? In other words, can you give the steps to what you’ve done so far so we can get a better perspective? Reference: https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/installing-group-and-sitewide-forums/

Well- I built the files, and uploaded them. I added the stuff to the CSS inserts. but I still see only toolbar. I have not addressed the tweaking yet, but shouldn’t I be seeing something to tweak?

@Hugo BuddyPress Template Pack creates the folder eg. /Activity/index.php but when I try to choose the Pages, the system does not see them and I can not select anything.

    Thanks

Do the pages actually exist? you have to have empty pages created and there to be selected, either named as conventionally or named as you wish.

Commendable! all but adding atahowlerhooper to the list that is :)

Guess I should have seen that list. My only worry with the list and all that work you’ve put in is that it rests on the forum links and posts themselves remaining true, be nice if there were some easy means of bundling stuff into a template zip or some such ‘thing’.

Right I’ll sidetrack post no more now I’ve vented my fury at atahowlerhooper

@mercime I did what you told me by changing almost to all available permalink and the issue still exists. The error I am getting is:
The following active BuddyPress Components do not have associated WordPress Pages: Activity Streams, Discussion Forums, User Groups, Members.
but when I go Buddypress pages I can not find any of the above pages to associate Activity, Streams and so on.
Plus I am using Templatic GeoPlaces theme.

    Thanks for your help.

    @indieconnect Good luck.

@hnla I know, I know, Atahualpa’s tables and all. But it’s a valid request for a popular theme plus it’s much much much better than the Artisteer” themes which I have declined to “template-pack-it” even if table-less. Having said that, all customization requests for BP-Atahualpa layout should be sent to theme author :-)

== you must have a good working list of themes now? for a codex list ? ==
Done it, I did :-) I’d already started compiling and adding to the list of all template-packed themes (45+) assisted in forums and 3 posted in Codex. My last update includes Atahualpa.https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/wordpress-to-buddypress-theme/#template-packed-wordpress-themes

I know I always mince my words, should really learn to say it how it is :)

Table layouts are unsustainable, fragile, break all notion of separation of content from style, throw one of the main virtues of CSS-P out with the trash, on many a forum dealing in Standards based frontend coding you’ll find many that will simply not help with table layouts, 10 years down the road and we really should have seen the back of them.

I’m sure Mercim’s changes will be effective, but lets hope we don’t see too many BP themes popping up using it :) – sorry Mercim not meaning to insult your efforts :p

In fact Mercime you a have helped with so many third party theme conversions to BP that you must have a good working list of themes now? for a codex list ?

Hee Hee! So Hugo how do you really feel? Sorry to stomp on a nerve! Thanks for getting back so fast.
I’ll give Mercime’s instructions a try and put looking at themes on my to-do list.

    > Atahualpa is definitly a very achieved tool for wp users.
    > make the two work together, but just can’t quite get there.

Sorry to interject in a rather irritating fashion but I’ve run across this theme before and to be brutally honest you should not waste the time trying to make it compatible with anything it’s a table based layout and as such utterly outmoded and redundant and like a red rag to any long suffering Standards based coders :)

As for remembering settings you only need to trawl through the options table and others if you are actually wanting a completely clean install of BP and this is seldom really required.

Thank you for going the extra mile to feel my pain. Me and etienne-r greatly appreciate it. The floundering discussions in the Atahualpa forums really show that people want to be able to make the two work together, but just can’t quite get there.

Yesterday I was cruising the forum looking for the secret knowledge and I found a post about Buddypresss ‘remembering’ settings from previous installs. Mine does this. Do I need to go through that? will it matter? and should it be done before this new and exciting list?

please turn off your caps lock before replying further.

What you describe sounds like styling issues, cross browser styling issues. You do not mention anything about you setup, this info helps to determine what might be going on. If you have a child theme/ bp compatible theme running then please disable it and revert to the BP default theme and check whether you still see the problem, also – just in case it’s a plugin issue – de-activate all plugins other than BuddyPress.

@indieconnect @etienne-r-2 I installed Atahualpa. Changing instructions. I had to hardcode for fixed 3 column layout, delete extraneous code, add styles via theme options page and move wp_footer to where it’s supposed to be (before closing body tag), etc.

    Create BLANK header-buddypress.php, sidebar-buddypress.php and footer-buddypress.php files

    1) header-buddypress.php – copy all from http://pastebin.com/jv4EdjnK and save

    2) sidebar-buddypress.php – leave blank

    3) footer-buddypress.php – copy all from http://pastebin.com/DksDP4Mc and save

Upload 3 files to theme folder in server

Then go to your dashboard Appearance > Atahualpa Theme Options > Add HTML/CSS Inserts – CSS Inserts section

    4) Add the following styles under h1 to h6 default styles in the box – http://pastebin.com/thcGExQg

You have to tweak your styles a little more. Use Firebug, a Firefox add-on to identify what you need to tweak and add them in the CSS inserts section of your theme options page.

    Mercime-
I edited the two files (header.php ->header-buddypress.php and sidebar-buddypress.php) and put them in the atahualpa directory where header.php lives. It still looks the same.

== I have already running custom permalinks as /%city_name%/%post_id%/. ==
@nookeet Change custom permalink to what’s available on panel other than default and see if issue is resolved.

What WP theme are you using with BP Template Pack plugin?
