ParticipantRun Settings > Permalinks and set to other than default i.e. pretty permalinks is a must. Double-check WP configurations and if you have a problem there, resolve it in WordPress.org forums before installing BuddyPress.
https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/before-installing/
https://wordpress.org/support/You do not move BuddyPress plugin folder/files around in your server at all. You can install BP in either of these two ways:
1. auto install via dashboard menu Plugins > Add New > BuddyPress then network activate. or
2. Upload buddypress plugin in wp-content/plugins/ folder in your server, then go to dashboard to activate BPAfter either #1 or #2 above, Install a BP-compatible theme like https://buddypress.org/extend/themes/ and you’re good to go.

ParticipantIf you are using a custom BP theme, change to bp-default theme.

ParticipantThanks. I wasn’t able to do auto upgrade, so in fact did it manually. Again, my problem seems to be that the BuddyPress theme can no longer be “activated,” even though it *is* the active theme; this affects the entire widgets interface, which seems to function fine (vs. the link you posted) but it refers to the wrong theme! Further ideas welcome.

ParticipantIf you upgraded to WP 3.0.5 via dashboard auto upgrade, do a manual update via FTP or cPanel
https://codex.wordpress.org/Updating_WordPress#Manual_UpdateAlso re widgets, WP Dev Andrew Nacin posted about that here http://wpdevel.wordpress.com/2011/02/10/if-your-menus-or-widgets-screens-broke/

ParticipantI’m trying to keep this conversation within topic here where you originally mentioned it, rather than wild in the activity stream.
I’ve managed to get forums working on a 1and1 shared hosting…
I don’t think any of the wp-config.php or .htaccess or php.ini tricks for increasing memory work for 1and1 shared hosting. Even if wordpress tells you it has more, it will still behave as if it hasn’t…
As ray said, you should disable as many plugins as possible at least till the forums are enabled. I already mentioned what I had done about plugins here
To find out how much memory a plugin or theme is using I use https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-system-health/.
You appear to be using buddypress social theme – which I haven’t tried but it has lots of options and may use lots of memory. With limited memory it would be better to use a simple child theme of buddypress default and customise it.

ParticipantI would like to do something similar, but I would like to remove the group activity on the group’s main page. With a forum I don’t see why I need it. Also would like to make the group owners able to make a full home page of their group with banner and such. I thought I could use the forms under their profile to take in the data that they want on their page like the links or banner heading and description and other items. Like contact list ect. If at all possible this form creation could be on the settings button so a dozen have to be on their profile and they would be able to create more groups than one. On the group creation there would be the form and they can go back to change also. And it would be great to have this in the plugin instead of editing my child theme pages.

Participant@r-a-y – If this is a 1and1 shared hosting memory issue then that will not help. WordPresss may report a higher memory but 1and1 servers will still be stuck at 30mb….. I would love to get round this problem myself, other than by limiting what plugins and themes etc I can run….

KeymasterThere’s no such function.
You could try something like this in your theme’s functions.php:
`
function my_not_first_post() {
global $topic_template;$current_page = $topic_template->pag_page – 1;
$post_position = $current_page * $topic_template->pag_num + $topic_template->current_post;
if ( 0 != $post_position ) {
// do your business here… eg.
echo ‘Re: ‘;
}}
`Then you can shove this function in topic.php:
“Disclaimer: Untested.

KeymasterThesis is only a WordPress theme.

You don’t need to create a WordPress network if you don’t want users to create full-blown WordPress blogs.
If you want your users to post on a single WordPress install without creating a WP network, you might be interested in this thread:

r-a-y
KeymasterCurrently, this isn’t possible to do in the dashboard, you have to manually add some template tags into your theme.
Template tags can be found in the /plugins/buddypress/ directory. Look for files suffixed with -templatetags.php.
—
I’ll get you started with a link to the logged in user’s profile page.
Add this to your theme’s functions.php:
`
function my_profile_link() {
global $bp;if ( $bp->loggedin_user->id )
echo ‘loggedin_user->domain . $bp->profile->slug . ‘/”>Profile‘;
}
`Then add the following in your template:
`
if ( function_exists( ‘my_profile_link’ ) )
my_profile_link();
`The rest is up to you!

KeymasterIf you used the BuddyPress Template Pack plugin to add BP support to your theme, the plugin copies over template files to your theme’s directory.
You can remove these template files by deleting these directories in your theme:
/activity/
/members/
/groups/
/forums/
/blogs/
/registration/Also make sure you have BuddyPress and anything BuddyPress-related deactivated.

MemberSame here. And what is worse, any changes I make to my theme are not saved. I can edit index.php theme file all I want and nothing I put in there actually changes the site. It’s like the site is calling some other theme file instead or something.
February 13, 2011 at 1:46 pm #105305In reply to: How do I uninstall Buddypress on standard WP blog
WisTex
MemberSo basically I have to redo all the changes I made to the theme after installing buddypress? That sucks. I tried restoring some of the files, but the buddypress installation screwed it up so that when I edit certain template files, like index.php, the changes do not take effect at all. It simply ignores it. I can’t figure out why.

ParticipantSounds like a theme issue, not really a bp issue… I would look into your plugins, or your database to make sure everything is in place

ParticipantThe bp-default theme does not yet support WP3 custom menus, but it will with Buddypress v1.3. In the meantime – and this is a good idea at all times – use a child-theme that does support custom menus.

ParticipantWell, the admin bar propagates through all sites no matter what theme I have activated. I’m sure I can find a way to disable that, just wasn’t sure if there was a way via the GUI.
That, and all the registration links lead to the site that is installed in the main directory. This isn’t likely a BP thing but a shared DB thing I suspect?
February 13, 2011 at 2:13 am #105281modemlooper
ModeratorIf you install BP it will install on the main blog. It will not install on other blogs in a MU installation. You can only have it installed on one blog at a time. BuddyPress is very much tied to a theme. So if your main site doesn’t have a BP enabled theme then you really don’t even see it as you need special template files to output BP content

@mercime
Participant@poodyglitz first thing I’d do is to isolate what could be causing erratic behavior. Deactivate all plugins except BP and change theme to bp-default. Then check if you can now add links and forum posts. If that’s cool, then proceed to activate your theme, then plugins one by one while adding links and forum posts between each activation.
February 13, 2011 at 12:28 am #105272modemlooper
ModeratorIt only works on one blog on a multisite installation. The login data is WP user data so that works across all blogs but the actual BP theme/ site attaches to the first blog. If you want to have is separated, like on a url community.url.com then you need to change some settings. https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/install-buddypress-on-a-secondary-blog/
