    @johnnyjonjon,

    When untranslated, obviously, an apostrophe is the same as a single quote, and primes are either a double quote or a single quote. And, when texturized, an apostrophe uses the same HTML entity (& 8 217 ; – without space) as a closing single quote. You may have a desire to translate these, or there may be no need to. That’s fine.
    source: https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/important-changes-for-wordpress-3-4/

    Translation of email message must be writen normally.

    in a php string, what’s new should be written what & # 39; s new (without space) (iso latin-1)
    the ampersanded company name in the po file should be: A & a m p; M(without space)

    in a email message (and only in email message), you write what’s new or A&M

    BP use UTF8 charset by default and XML transitionnal encoding

    That’ said, some mail reader’s convert  html entities into what?new or what â € ™ s. In such case you have to check your mail software or browser settings.

    chouf1 has already explained this to you.

    Po file is for translating. It’s a working file.

    Mo file is for translation throught php gettext. Only the mo is mandatory, not the po or the pot
    Once you finish the translation of a po file, you need to compile it to mo format with poEdit. (or equivalent tool)

    Editing the po does nothing until you use it to create a mo file.
    Do yourself a favor – get poEdit. It’s free and very easy to use.

    @chouf1 I’m sorry, I totally understand what you mean. Sometimes I’m in such a hurry that I forget to explain everything properly and clear :P.

    Anyway the plugin I use is CodeStyling Localization.

    Like I said, I also tried to edit the po file of wordpress and buddypress with notepad++ and when I update the old file in the ftp nothing changes unfortunately.

    @fernon

    again:
    Probably because you don’t the right thing to translate.
    You edit with which tool ?

    Give a name please…. :mrgreen:
    There are several tools and i have no time to loose to search about basic infos YOU can provide.
    Anyway i wouldn’t trust online translation plugins. Preferably use poEdit on local and transfer your po/mo by FTP

    When I translate wordpress and the theme by itself it works.This is a bad reason !

    In french we say: five minutes before he died, he was alive. If i apply what you say, you will ask: why did he die, he was alive 5 minutes ago ?

    Nothing is written in marble, except tombstones 😉

    @chouf1 internationalization plug and I tried to edit it manually. When I translate wordpress and the theme by itself it works, but when I want to translate the dutch buddypress nothing happens.

    buddypress-nl_NL.mo must be in wp-content/languages

    May not be pertinent, but what does your wp-config file say re this setting:

    `define(‘WPLANG’, ”);`

    i didn’t say “except” buddupress-es_ES !
    i said
    check the languages folder witch must contain the following files:

    buddypress.mo

    And WP’s default translation files:
    [file list]

    Hi @chouf1 and thanks for your extensive and clear reply, to answer your questions:

    1. Site URL link
    2. Single WP but considering Multisite in near future
    3. PHP version 5.2.17
    4. Yes they provide me gettext with php

    About your suggestions:

    1. I’m using WP 3.5.1
    2. Checked the language folder and there were all the files You say except the buddypress.mo, I added it, clear chache, made a new activity update and nothing happens.
    3. Actually the theme has .mo and .po files and I checked them and where ok, no strange translation or mistakes.
    4. I’ll try the wp-include folder option and update this topic again.

    Really, really, thanks for all your time!

    @naturalworldstm,

    can you give a site URL please ? Also do you use BP on a multisite or on a single WP ? What PHP version do you use ? And does your host provide gettext with PHP. ?
    https://codex.wordpress.org/User:Ipstenu/How_to_create_a_phpinfo%28%29_page

    Basically, the %s ago thing is a wordpress function – also used by BP on the activity time. If you already checked the BP part, and it seems ok according what you say above, i don’t know what happens so far.
    This issue could be a mistake from the translator or something else directly handled by WordPress.

    If you’re using WP 3.5.1, check the languages folder witch must contain the following files:

    buddypress.mo

    And WP’s default translation files:
    es_ES.mo (for WP in spanish)
    admin-es_ES.mo (dashboard)
    admin-network-es_ES.mo (network dashboard)
    continents-cities-es_ES.mo (a list of cities in your language, used for date/time setting in dashboard, not mandatory)

    If you use bbPress 2.2.x, there should also being a folder /bbPress/ containing bbress-es_ES.mo

    In wp-config.php you must have a line saying
    define(”WPLANG’, ‘es_ES’);

    If you use WP MS, you also have to set the network to your language in the Network Settings.

    If you use a third party theme, it may contain his own /languages/ or /lang/ folder with a pot file at least. This file must be used to translate the theme.The theme translation mo file should be in this folder.

    Some themes are sometimes delivered with .mo files. Unfortunatly, those additionnal mo files are rarely updated. So if the theme has a es_ES.mo or theme-es_ES.mo, you can use the pot file to check or update the theme  translation. In fact, in such case, the only file in witch you can trust, is the pot file. It also can be that the pot is not updated too, which means you have to recreate it from start, with a compiler such as poEdit…. :mrgreen:

    This rule is also valuable for plugins.

    At this point, i suspect a corrupted WP file. To eliminate this possibility, i would try the following.

    Delete the whole wp-includes folder and upload a fresh copy of 3.5.1 via FTP
    https://core.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/23897/tags/3.5.1?old_path=%2F&format=zip

    If you use a previous version, go here:
    https://core.trac.wordpress.org/browser/tags

    Don’t use the right click to download something from Trac repo. Always click first on the file or folder name, and use the download button at the bottom of that page.

    Hi @chouf1 I use bp-media (actually recently), I have the translation file and I translate its po file to es_ES. I try deactivating this plugin but still the same. Any idea?

    More info: In BP pages the date format remains but the language not and in not BP pages the date format doesn’t remains, I can see this because the activity stream bar in footer (You can see it in the image)

    The most important thing is the language, the format is a secondary problem.

    Thanks for your reply!

    ola @naturalworldstm,

    do you use bp-media or bp-album ? Verify that you have the translation file for it.

    !important concern only css, and x days ago translation has nothing to do with css.

    Hi @djpaul,

    Does uses 1.7-beta1 bp-custom.php for slug translation?

    – My bp-custom.php working correctly in 1.6.4 BP but not working correctly in 1.7-beta1.

    These slugs are translated just for user profile, not group profile. It is OK?

    define ( ‘BP_MEMBERS_SLUG’, ‘clenove’ );

    define ( ‘BP_FORUMS_SLUG’, ‘klubovna’ );

    Thanks for idea, help.

    Okay I finally got it. Not certain it is totally right but it looks good in both chrome and firefox. I did have to create a div class in the members-loop.php called user-location surrounding the code from step 3 in the tutorial to be able to style it. The changes I made are in the below css in case anyone wants to try this. I also included a pic at the bottom to show the end result. Thank you both for your help! Cheers!

    Dear Moderators,
    Please do/fix this in the next releases. I also wanted to change Group to something that reads in my language (though the string ‘Group’ is in .po and .mo files and translated, it is still in English on Dashboard). How great it would have been if i was easily able to change them?
    I’ve been wrestling this issue for several weeks and now trying to hire someone who can hack it and insert the translation.
    Thank you guys.

    thank you for the answer. I do understand what you’re advising. The theme has a .pot file that i translated to .po and .mo files. WP is running on the same language. The language is set in wp-config file. It’s a single site installation.
    But i still have those 4 words in English on dashboard. Avtivity, Groups, Members and Forums. Interestingly, when i change the theme to WP default theme, they are in translated version. But in that case, those words are not on the dashboard. If i activate the BP theme, they appear on the dashboard and back to English. If i manually insert the translation for those words, where they can be found? I guess that would be a file which is responsible for dashboard, right?

    if the theme comes with only a po or pot file, the translation cannot work. This po file is for edit purpose only and should be converted to a mo file

    Also have you set define wp_lang to your language in the wp-config file ?

    If you have a multisite install, you have to double-check if your language is defined in the WP general settings.

    If you don’t understand what i’m writing, go to the codex and read the chapter dedicated to BP in your language

    thanks @sbrajesh

    i’m working on the translation, not coding actually. 😉

    I just wonder on this new message and the comments:

    function bp_setup_current_user() {

    // If the current user is being setup before the “init” action has fired,
    // strange (and difficult to debug) role/capability issues will occur.

    Is this message viewed by the user on front-end ? Or only in the admin ?

    And if roles/caps will occur, the super-admi is also affected i guess. I presume this was tested by the devs, so advice about what kind of incident this can give would be great to know.

    @gavpedz maybe something’s getting lost in translation, but you can post activity status updates in the home page of the Group (activity by default) you are already a member of. If you mean otherwise, please explain further.
