@djpaul You are a genius!
I figured out what was wrong. I wanted to be sure I had your assumed setup and after deactivating my plugins everything worked. I had at some time activated a plugin called qTranslate (https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/qtranslate/) which broke BuddyPress.
So if anybody else runs into my problem, try deactivating all plugins to see if anyone of them is causing the weird behavior.
Should a plugin like that be able to break another plugin? Do we need some sort of a plugin interoperability page to inform users what works together and what does not work together?
Well, it’s not an easy thing to do fullstop. You have to know a certain amount of PHP and HTML to create or edit a WordPress theme, and it is no different here. Have you, via BP Template Pack, copied the templates / css / js into your theme? Does the CSS get loaded when you visit the front of the site?
Are you getting any errors? A blank site is usually called by a fatal error. Set WP_DEBUG to true in your config file define( ‘WP_DEBUG’, true ); . If you still don’t see any errors then do search through the files in wp-content/plugins/buddypress for any error_reporting(); calls and set it to error_reporting( E_ALL);
Same here, BuddyPress 1.2.5.2, WordPress 3.01 and can’t delete users.

“Ensure that you can write to / have a .htaccess file.”
It is not clear to me and other new users how to do this. Changing the options from the default is not enough. From this link it is not clear what we actually have to do: https://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_File_Permissions
“Navigate to the WP permalinks section of the dashboard and ensure you have selected one of the options and saved,”
I chose the month and name option but unlike what the codex implies this is not an option and also not sufficient.
“what, if any, messages do you get after saving? if none are the links now working?”
This is the message I get:
Not Found
The requested URL /blog/groups/ was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
I am completely stuck now. I think the codex needs to be revised so it is clear how to do this. “Ensure that you can write to / have a .htaccess file.”
The dashboard instructions when installing are not clear to me. I don’t know what to do with the code.
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /blog/
RewriteRule ^index.php$ – [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /blog/index.php [L]
Thanks for your time.
@lupin3 – I don’t know any off the shelf function that prints the filename. Depending on your browser, tools like firebug on firefox and developer tools on Safari may help you.
Location of the files really depends which part of your theme you mean: the main blog / news ones or the social network specific ones such as profile, groups, etc.
For the blog specific pages – this page gives you an overview of all the WP files: https://codex.wordpress.org/Theme_Development
I don’t know what documentation is still around on 1.1.3 theme files. However, most of the files were typically in fairly explanatory-named subfolders of your member theme (e.g. in folders such as friends, members, wire, activity, profile)
Another option is to use/create a widget, something like https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/user-bio-widget/ perhaps (untested).
member-header.php is located in /bp-default/members/single/.
If you’re making modifications to the bp-default theme, build a child theme so your changes will not be wiped out:

Read this: http://wpmu.org/how-to-add-a-custom-default-avatar-for-buddypress-members-and-groups/

If you’re using another plugin to upload avatars, you’ll need to override the way BuddyPress fetches avatars.
Specifically, you’ll need to override the “bp_core_fetch_avatar” filter located in /buddypress/bp-core-avatars.php file.
Need a primer on filters? Read this:
https://codex.wordpress.org/Plugin_API#Filters
I decided to go ahead and try replacing all references to is_site_admin with is_super_admin, but it did not resolve this issue.
Has anybody else seen this? Can you help me identify whether it is a WordPress issue or a BuddyPress issue?
Thanks,
Adam
I can’t find my member-header.php. What version are you using?
I have to admit I’m still confused–there is no the_time() reference in index.php, nor is there any obvious place that I can see where you would insert such a date command. I just want the date of a blog post to appear on the main page, as it would in an ordinary WordPress blog installation, but it’s unclear to me where one would do so.
I was playing around with themes on my WordPress 3.0 / Buddypress 1.2.5.2 installation and after installing one theme (I want to use Buddypress Twenty Ten) Members, Groups and all those BuddyPress pages stopped working. I have Googled around and tried the solutions I found but none seem to work (there is a possibility that I did something wrong).
I’ve also tried to change back to bp-default but that doesn’t work. All other pages (blog posts, etc.) seem to work, just not the BuddyPress pages.
Can anybody help me get them up and running again?
Thanks in advance,
Tryggvi
Cheers Roger, I’ll look at that.
manually updated wordpress but that didnt work – going to try previous version
I have created a child theme of bp-default under themes/bp-fusion/, and my CSS change sare overriding the original CSS just fine. But I am having problems doing the same with the php templates.
e.g.
I copied the single.php into my child theme folder, made some changes and they have no effect. If I view the source, they are not even there.
I have used the edit themse page within wordpress itself as well, and there I can see my new files with the changes.
I have cleared the browser cache,
Have I missed something ?
Good day!
I just downloaded and tried to install BuddyPress (v1.2.5.2) on my WordPress(3.0.1 – completely fresh install) site. However, as soon as I activate the BuddyPress plugin, WordPress tries to download the PHP files when I click on a link. Also, the front-end of the site displays blank.
The site is running on my my local MAMP dev server.
I have tried reinstalling a few times, each with the same result. I asked a colleague in the office to install it on his dev site (same setup as I have) and it worked fine for him.
I would appreciate any help on the matter, I have spent the last hour browsing the forums and google, but have not found any answers.
Thanks in advance!
Cobus
@ch8rt
The BuddyPress activity loop fetches blog post activity, so yes – you can get the latest blog posts from within the activity loop.
https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/custom-buddypress-loops/the-activity-stream-loop/
Is it possible to have one loop that fetches all items from both buddypress and wordpress?
@mvvspr @rossagrant @fashionblogs and everyone else – I’ve changed some things and added the plugin to the repo https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-mass-messaging.
All of the errors should be taken care of, but if you still have issues please post here http://jeremylitten.com/buddypress-mass-messaging-plugin
Quick thoughts from my iPad…
For there to be more core committers, there needs for there to be more outstanding core patchers. There are a handful of great ones already, and they are noticed and recognized for their contributions. The leads are Andy and myself, and ultimately the future of the core project is decided by us. Very similar to WordPress, we keep an eye on developer plugins to look for anything that would make a good core feature.
Feature requests are great when there are people to do create them, but the best place to talk about core development is on the trac. The forums are more for support and discussion than they are for code talk, but part of that is also because currently the forums don’t play nicely with code blocks.
I don’t think we’re closing threads unless the discussion goes severely off topic or is no longer productive. If we are, I would agree that we shouldn’t be locking topics prematurely. Regarding the codex, anyone has the ability to modify it, so if anything is out of date anyone is free to fix it.
I also agree that things will be easier for us and make more sense when buddypress.org is a website worthy of being in its own showcase. Right now it’s a basic install with lots of custom bits to help integrate wp.org plugins.
It hurts to just add committers for the sake of having committers. Commit rights are earned through writing great core patches and showing a comprehension for the direction of the core project. There are plenty of great plugin devs that have written thousands of lines of their own code, but haven’t directly contributed to core.
Ultimately it would be great if we had one developer per core component to focus on it’s future, but so far no one has showed initiative to want to make improvements to anything. Right now we’re in a transition period where the branch and trunk need to be merged before I think a few more people are comfortable writing giant patches, but that time will come.
Paul hit almost every nail on the head in his reply above. It’s great that you see the need, now fill it.
We are trying to set up a main site powered by wordpress, and a secondary one with buddypress. We got to use WordPress MultiSite just fine, and were able to set up Buddypress to work with the secondary one. However, after activating it, we discovered the following:
On the secondary site, we get the following on the blos tab:
http://prssamembers.freehostia.com/wp/testmp/blogs/
Secondly, on the admin dashboard it is impossible to create posts or pages since you get a 500 Error.
Also, attempting to edit a profile or clicking to go to settings always sends you to the members tab.
We have WordPress 3.0, and have tried using Buddypress version 1.2.5.2 and the trunk version 1.3-bleeding. Both present the same issue. The current one is 1.2.5.2.
Hello there. I’d like to display the Group Memberships of the person making a forum post in their forum post by including the avatars of each group under their post. My users will be members of a limited number of groups, probably no more than 12 in all, and most will be members of 3 – 6.
Could any of you kind souls point me in the right direction ? I presume I need to modify the loop used to generate the forum posts but I’m not certain about how to do that, nor do I know how to assemble the correct collection of images. I currently use the BuddyPress Forums Extras – Signatures by Rich Fuller and I wondered if a post could even be given two signatures, one containing these Avatars.
I’m extremely new to BuddyPress and fairly new to WordPress so I apologise if this question has been asked before. I tried a bit of a search but I couldn’t find anything. I have a working knowlege of CSS & HTML and I can pick up bits of PHP fairly quickly and if you can help me you will earn my eternal gratitude.
