I am new to buddypress and haven’t installed it as yet. Does the installation need to go in a separate sub-directory or sub-domain to preserve an existing wordpress site as it is? I have multi-site working in WP 3.0.1 on sub-directories. I figured I need to install Buddypress in its own sub-directory, but if I do, is there a way for super admin to add users from the main WP installation to the BP installation? A plug-in for this perhaps? Also, I’d like to be able to create categories of users on the main site, e.g. Video Producers, Audio Produces, Still Photographers, Organizations, so that I can send messages to one o more user goups. Is there a plugin for this?
Also, when users are already logged in to the main site on the site root and they click a link to the social networking site, e.g. http://www.siteroot/buddypress/ I want them to be already logged in upon entering.
I’m going to take a stab at answering this. John has been actively involved as a core developer for almost a year. The post which you refer to did not change that in any way. We all love John and the commitment that he shows to BuddyPress is without question.
I feel the communication has improved. We’ve more posts on the .org blog about BuddyPress and its future in the last three months than we did almost all of last year. We also have the biweekly development chat which all are welcome to attend. Not to mention the variety of support and “Can I use BuddyPress for x, y and z” questions that we get on this forums, and at WordCamps. I’d like to segue briefly about WordCamps.
WordCamps are fab! There’s a central list at WordCamp.org, and I’d urge you to attend one if there’s one near where you are. This year’s events which covered BuddyPress:
@boonebgorges presented at WordCamp Boston (slides).
@johnjamesjacoby organised or presented or both at WordCamp Miami.
I presented at WordCamp Ireland (slides) and twice at WordCamp UK (slides).
@matt mentioned and answered several BuddyPress questions during his keynote at WordCamp San Francisco.
Henrik Hammer Berthelsen presented at WordCamp Denmark.
Esteban Garcia Bianchi and Juan Manuel Olivares presented at WordCamp Argentina.
Paolo Maffei presented at WordCamp Milan.
Jimmy Ngu presented at WordCamp Malaysia
@lisasabinwilson presented at WordCamp Raleigh.
Mitsuhiro Suwa presented at WordCamp Japan.
@danmilward presented at WordCamp Chicago. @wpmuguru did, too!
Annie Vranizan presented at Reno Tahoe WordCamp.
@lisasabinwilson presented again at WordCamp Boulder.
@gigalinux presented at WordCamp Berlin.
Robert Popovic presented at WordCamp NZ.
@johnjamesjacoby is presenting again this weekend at WordCamp Savannah.
There are BuddyPress talks scheduled for more WordCamps this year (including at two different WordCamps this coming weekend); the list above is of events which have already happened. I sometimes forget how popular BuddyPress is, and putting this list together has reminded me how awesome the software and our community is.
I would not hold much stock in the dates on the Trac timeline; it is a rough guide, just like the roadmap page is. Personally, I’m thankful for the extra time we have for 1.2.6; we’ve had a number of bugs fixed and enhancements reported and added to core which we only discovered after weeks’ worth of testing.
The best way for people to contribute to BuddyPress is to reports bugs, write patches and to test and leave feedback on them. The danger of topics like this one is that they have a tendency to go around in circles, and produce lots of talk but little action.
Ryan you really need to actually state what you have tried and what the issues are that you are having. To simply hope that someone leaps to it and sorts it out based on the above is unreasonable
So you have a theme you like? what have you attempted in order to make it BP compatible have you tried running the:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-template-pack/
The server is fine from that link it suggests you have a VPS which is effectively your own server to configure as you wish which is good, however that doesn’t mean it is set up 100% effectively, but for the moment one assumes it is.
– I had buddypress activated as a plug in on a site (which is a custom wordpress theme) when i visit it I am logged in as admin and a bar comes acrross the top of my screen Please seee http://blokmovaz.com/screenshot.png for a screen shot
This statement is a massive stumbling block as it tends to contradict other statements, ‘activated on a site’ ? on a site what site? This is what I was trying to establish, as earlier you say BP was/is being activated for the primary WP install – I am assuming it is.
Can you confirm that going into dashboard -> themes and deliberately activating the BP-default theme i.e removing any custom theme or otherwise from the proceedings, ensuring that any custom settings are removed for static pages under ‘General -> Reading’ settings page; so that we have an absolutely default BP install at work, the main page by default should be blog posts.
I’m for anything speeding up the process… BuddyPress is on the verge of taking off and “taking over”. I check the trac daily to see where we are in the process and help as much as I can… mainly because I NEED to get some of these seemingly basic fixes accomplished. The guys you’ve mentioned above are very SHARP, but there are time/money & commitments/constraints involved…
I firmly believe that once the 1.2.6 patch is released the BuddyPress platform will have shaken off it “childhood” stage and be primed to be THE major contender in the field of Social Media Platforms. Once “we”/”They” knock out 1.2.6 (and fix the issues with searching the BuddyPress Site and Site Spammers) the sky is the limit and people are going to begin to look at the fledgling “ugly duckling” of WordPress as the SWAN that it is.
BuddyPress is on the tarmac waiting to fly… it won’t be long now…
Didn’t mean where the actual files were located that is a given they have to be in the plugin folder. More what I was trying to establish is that you were not trying to do something out of the ordinary such as BP running on a sub blog of the main blog install.
– Oh no it is installed on the servers root. I have a linode server http://www.linode.com/ that wouldn’t have anything to do with it would it?
So you have an absolute basic default install of WP/BP? WP installed in main document root of the site and BP activated as a plugin of that primary WP install?
– correct
When you try changing your permalink structure after saving do you get any messages returned along the lines of not being able to write to .htaccess , although I guess if it’s taking a manual ‘index.php’ it must be?
I did get this at first but i then changed my permissions on the .htcess and then reset the permalinks and didnt get an error.
Can you tell me what the page is I’m looking at when I land on the site as it’s not a buddypress default layout or what looks like a child theme, I’m assuming that you haven’t activated BP or rather left BP activated.
– I had buddypress activated as a plug in on a site (which is a custom wordpress theme) when i visit it I am logged in as admin and a bar comes acrross the top of my screen Please seee http://blokmovaz.com/screenshot.png for a screen shot
What version of WP 2.9 are you running is it MU to enable user blogs?
-Im just using 2.9 when i look in the dashboard it just says “You are using WordPress 2.9”
I’m not sure if its MU how do i tell?
Have you created a BP theme for use with the site, obviously BP needs a BP enabled theme in order to function correctly.
– I have not yet… I havent been able to get it working in its default theme correctly on my server. I wanted to do that first.
TBH I think that you need to try and patch up your differences with the developer you were working with or failing that find another that can get into the core site and establish what exactly is what. That you state you were just meant to be the designer suggests that this is not something you should be trying to sort out, generally a frontend developer would run a job the designer supply them with necessary graphics for layout along with layout impressions. What does the client say about the developer not having finished things or are you running this job and subbing out the development WP side of things.
-The clients are friends of mine so while not having this site up is disappointing its not as bad as if it were a client of mine…Having said that, we have dumped a lot of money into this site….this is our second developer who just kind of stopped communicating with us right near the end of the job (after first 2 milestones and payments were meant). I feel like I am more experienced then your average newbie at wordpress however i feel like speed is key here… and with me trying to finish this up its going very slow. My hands are kind of tied when it comes to our past developer…. he just refuses to take my calls, return my emails, or texts. Not even sure why.
Thanks

p.s. if it just needs you to use the echo-ing version of the function: bp_the_topic_title() as suggested by @hnla, then please report back on this thread, so that we have the information.
I assumed you would have been trying to echo the result anyway. Please post all your relevant code in future
You need to look at the following:
https://codex.wordpress.org/Meta_Tags_in_WordPress
and the file bp-forums-templatetags.php in the bp-forums folder
You can then build your forum SEO tags, just the way you want, in your theme’s header.php file
Agree with Roger. To get started building a component for BP 1.1.3, use version 1.3.1 of https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-skeleton-component/download/
@johnwinch42
If you are converting an existing theme to BuddyPress, you should probably take a look at this plugin: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-template-pack/
It’s not something I’ve used, but there are a number of developers who go that route.
Have a look at the plugin / instructions. Also search on this forum for bp-template-pack, there are lots of threads.

I installed on bluehost and it worked.
Bluehost problem is that later you will have problems with file count
or as said @ rogercoathup change provider or installed in the subdirectory as said @ mercime
I see that you installed wordpress.
follow the steps and pay attention to what appears.
you to succeed
Couldn’t you create your own loop that calls the groups forums that you want. Then repeat it a few times for each group forum you want to list?
if ( bp_has_groups( ‘slug=GroupName’) ) :
locate_template( array( ‘forums/forums-loop.php’ ), true )
endif;
Or what about the forum extra’s plugin? https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-group-forum-extras/
On WordPress 3.0, with a blog network installed, when you browse to the Buddypress member’s blogs page it shows all the blogs for that user. It also shows a snippet from the most recent post labeled “latest post”. However on my install of WP 3.0+ it appears that the original super admin user (user id 1) has a database table prefix of “wp_” instead of “wp_1_” so for example posts are stored in “wp_posts” instead of “wp_1_posts”. But for user 2 they’re stored in “wp_2_posts”.
Looking through the buddypress code the database request for the latest post (get_blog_extras in bp-blogs-classes.php) adds the user id into the table prefix no matter what, so on my install when you look at the admin’s blogs page it doesn’t show the “latest post”.
Does anyone else have this problem or is this unique to my install? It’s not a big deal I only discovered it because I was trying to use the code to do something else.
– login to your phpMyAdmin
– choose database where your WP/BP site is installed
– find and click on yourprefix_users to open
– scroll down to field user_login under field ID 1 (that’s you) and change to another username
– click on save and close phpMyAdmin
– you could change password at the same time, but it has extra steps seen here
https://codex.wordpress.org/Resetting_Your_Password#Through_phpMyAdmin
I wasn’t thinking and chose to name my Super Admin user ‘wp-admin.’
Now, when I attempt to view the profile of that user within BuddyPress at the address http://mydomain.com/members/wp-admin/ I see the WordPress admin dashboard.
Is there a way for me to fix this?
Perhaps there’s a trick that will allow me to change the username of the Super Admin?
Or a BuddyPress work-around to keep this from happening?
Thank you,
Adam
If you can get WordPress to run on a different database server, then BuddyPress should work too; I’m not aware of any non-standard SQL.
then you will need to change your hosting provider, or go for the subfolder install option.
It’s all covered on the WordPress page I pointed you to.
yeah I think WP does support SQL Server 2008 but I am wondering if BuddyPress does?
I know the requirements for BuddyPress is an installation of WordPress but BuddyPress runs on MySQL it seems so not sure how to migrate a WP on SQL Server over to BP?
i am running wordpress 3.0.1+Buddy press, i have a question how can i allow each of my users to start their own full powered WordPress blog ??? i am have bluehost
Based on that then yes buddyPress should be an ideal fit, it will fill all your requirements either out of the box or with the addition of a plugin here or there.
As far as I can recall WP was capable of running on different DB engines but I’d have to verify that and may be going mad, best to check the WP codex for info.
I would draw issue on whatever poll it was that referred to WordPress as a CMS it’s a blog which extends beyond that boundary and keeps extending and growing and does do a good job of accomodating static pages but apps like Drupal are more geared towards being termed a CMS imho.

Hi hnla,
Thanks for the reply.
Well, I want to set up a community type website where users can:
– Register as a member
– If already a registered member, log in and join a group or create their own group
– Use forums, blogs, see events (or for group owners to set up new events and publiscise them), email others within their group(s), share documents in their group and discuss any of the above (provide feedback on documents, blog entries and events etc).
– Be able to browse restricted content belonging to groups they are not a member of
– General forum for all the groups within the community
Hope that makes sense!
Wordpress won the best CMS of the year last year in some poll so perhaps I got it confused?
Hey
I just installed buddypress in wordpress 3.0.1 and when i was trying to uptade permalinks, this horrible questopn about .hcacces apeared. It took me 1 hour to find it and I couldnt find it, but it is possible to make it, and here is the link to the tutorial that explains how to make it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnmGnLW3qho. Now my bp is linkable and i am dealing with fresh opstacles!
G-luck
Hello, I’ve installed and worked with buddypress in the past and I’m currently working with a fresh install. I’m using WP 3.0 and have enabled the multi-site functionality. Then I installed buddypress, activated the default theme, and set the permalinks to default.
When logged in as the administrator all the buddypress menu links are available from the back end, but when I navigate to the activity page on the front end i’m not logged,
Then if I click on the log in link i’m navigated to the wordpress login.php even though I’m already logged in. If I log in again it send me to the home page, but I’m still logged out.
If I then manually navigate via url to the site/wp-admin I’m logged in and all the buddypress nav links are available as they should be.
Any idea what might be happening here? Note: I’m setting up a cloud hosting account this weekend and I have a feeling that this bug will go away when I do, but I’d still like to understand what’s happening.
Thanks, Dustin
