Topic: How to Optimize Server Space
I am helping work with the latest install of Buddypress and run WordPress 3.0.1 for a blog with upwards of 5000 students, and am wondering how to optimize my server to buddypress. We are running a LAMP server, but with so many users finding it difficult to work with buddypress. Suggestions?
At this website: http://apeatling.wordpress.com/2008/06/12/new-buddypress-theme/ there is a BP theme, that has the navigation structure on the side. Looks clean to me and wondering how to get this theme?
Or how do I get this nav structure into my theme BP corporate?
Help appreciated.

Hi, I’ve seen this question posted before in the forums but not satisfactorily answered, so here goes my version:
The BP feature list states ”Even allow each of your users to start their own full powered WordPress blog.” Yet I can find no reference anywhere of how to set up blog capabilities for users, except for the Facebook-style activity stream post box (which I’m assuming isn’t what’s meant by user blogs). How do you do it? How do users access their own blog in order to make new posts?
In fact I don’t even really need a fullly-fledged WordPress blog for each user, just the ability for users to contribute posts (ideally from a front-end Quickpress-like interface) into a pre-defined list of categories. This is to build creative writing community where users may post their short-stories, poetry, scripts etc. in order for other members to review them.
Is there any idiot-proof documentation anywhere that discusses the multi-user blogging options in BP?
(PS – I first tried BP with a new WP install as per the BP site instructions. I then tried enabling WP multisite – but neither way offered any user blog options as far as I could see).
Topic: Drupal Commons
Anybody here with expierience in Drupal Commons – http://acquia.com/products-services/drupal-commons ?
Is it similar to wordpress and buddypress and what are the pro and cons? It looks like it has a build in Wiki and Calender which would be pretty nice!
Hi All,
I have setup and installed my version of BuddyPress, everything is going smoothly bar this!
One my registration page I have a number of fields. The wordpress side; Username, Email, Password. And then the BuddyPress Profile side; Name, Age, Bio etc.
Why the hell would I want two “Name” fields both Username and Name? I want to be able to delete the WordPress “Username” field and just use the BuddyPress “Name” core field for everything.
My website has no need for usernames… I have only about 150 members, this number will not grow. Nobody has the same name as another. I want to publicly display and use the “Name” field (which is everyone’s full names) and get rid of the Username field!
Thanks,
SteveHi I have a buddypress website and am using the BP_columns theme. I have my front page configured as a static page. Ideally I would like to display the latest site wide blog posts in little boxes, in a similar way to how it is done on the wordpress.com front page.
Anyone know how to do this?
Thanks,
Alex
I am planning on purchasing Wishlist, but I am also planning on using BuddyPress. If I am using WordPress 3.01, can both Wishlist and BuddyPress work together in one website run by WordPress.
If not would you please let me know why?
I’ve a site which grabs a fairly large number of submitted blog feeds for syndication. They come from all over – wordpress.com, blogger, individual blogs on various platforms. Recently an issue has arisen where in a lot of feeds the first image is a tweetmeme or a stats tracker. Since we are pulling the first image and showing it at 150px wide, this looks awful.
We can individually contact those submitting feeds to resolve this, but it’s like playing whack a mole, and I’d prefer to somehow filter them out. I am doing this in the standard WordPress pages within a function that grabs the first image from the feed, then filters out those containing certain strings – ‘api’, ‘stats’. ‘tracker’ etc. I’m trying to figure out how to do it here.
I’ve located the function that shows the thumbnail – in shortened version below:
function bp_activity_thumbnail_content_images( $content ) {
preg_match_all( ‘/]*>/Ui’, $content, $matches );
$content = preg_replace(‘/]*>/Ui’, ”, $content );
if ( !empty( $matches ) ) {
/** —- stuff about image size —*/if ( !empty( $src ) ) {
/** —- stuff about image size —*/$content = ‘
‘ . $content;
}
}return apply_filters( ‘bp_activity_thumbnail_content_images’, $content, $matches );
}I’ve made some attempts at a filter, but I am going nowhere. Basically I don’t really know what I am doing, which is probably stating the blindingly obvious.
function lose_rubbish_images ($src) {
if(stristr($src, ‘tracker’)) {
$content = ”;
} elseif(stristr($src, ‘api’)) {
$content = ”;
} elseif(stristr($src, ‘stats’)) {
$content = ”;
} elseif(stristr($src ‘statistics’)) {
$content = ”;
}}
add_filter(‘bp_activity_thumbnail_content_images’,’lose_rubbish_images’);Can anyone point me in the right direction?
This should not be difficult. I just don’t know how. I want to limit people who register on my buddypress site to those who go to a certain school. The easiest way would be to whitelist the domain myschool.edu on the registration page and not allow any other signup, at least for the initial registration. I don’t care if people change their address afterwards.
How can I do that? Before I installed buddypress, I was using a whitelist plugin and it worked fine with the regular WordPress installation (3.01). It doesn’t seem to stop non ‘myschool.edu’ registrations anymore.
Thanks for any help.
Greetings!
I am new to wordpress and buddypress.. I have been running a ning network for a couple of years and figured I’d take a look at shifting it all to a buddypress system instead.I have installed wp and bp successfully.. and was installing a bunch of plugins when I hit a snag..
I intalled (from the dashboard) the ‘qtranslate admin’ plugin – I think its this one http://buddypress.org/community/groups/buddypress-qtranslate/members/ –
and now whenever I view a buddypress page I am seeing the following error message:Fatal error: Call to undefined function is_user_logged_in() in *internal server path – removed by me, nick, manually in this forum post* /public_html/infiniteeureka.com/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/bp-translate/includes/bp-translate-user.php on line 103
Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this? Am I even posting this message in the right forum?
cheers
