yes I did follow all the steps exactly, and I added the lines to .htcaccess and wp-config.
I just checked my .htcaccess and it looks like this:
# BEGIN WordPress
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index.php$ – [L]
# uploaded files
RewriteRule ^([_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/)?files/(.+) wp-includes/ms-files.php?file=$2 [L]
# add a trailing slash to /wp-admin
RewriteRule ^([_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/)?wp-admin$ $1wp-admin/ [R=301,L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f [OR]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d
RewriteRule ^ – [L]
RewriteRule ^([_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/)?(wp-(content|admin|includes).*) $2 [L]
RewriteRule ^([_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/)?(.*.php)$ $2 [L]
RewriteRule . index.php [L]
# END WordPress
So everything I added according to tools/network is there. What should I do now? I don’t think it’s the plugins. I already tried that. Where’s the option to show the blogs? I have been going through every single menu item over and over and I cannot find where I switched that off.
I left my former host because of their site load speed. I tested all, Yahoo seemed the fastest that i can currently afford, so i decided to move to them.
Now i realize after migrating that they don’t have Mod_Rewrite Enabled on their server, so wordpress cannot write to .htaccess and i wrote them and apparently they cannot get that working for me any time soon. Migrating again will be such a pain.
and Buddypress needs mod_rewrite that to work.
i tried to bypass that issue by using /index.php/ before my permalink structure. It works but doesnt work for pages specific to buddypress
which one do you suggest i use?
site load speed is of real concern to me..
so if i enter the address like : http://studentscircle/index.php/activity/ it opens the activity of buddypress without problems. but if use http://studentscircle.net/live/activity ? get a 404 not found.
so i have done an auto redirect for the group directory page, member directory page and activity directory to direct users to a index.php/directory when they enter /directory
but its going to be a lot of pain creating individual directories and redirecting them for all groups and forums. and when users create new forums, it will not redirect because i ll have to do it manually.
so its there a way i can add that all the buddypress pages have the /index.php/ put in front of them automatically. so that when users click on the links..
The painful part is that users cannot currently access their profile.
I really do no want to change hosting..
HELP
I have buddypress installed with my richwp wordpress template site.
I have the following problems:
The avatars under members are off-kilter and on top of each other
When I installed bbpress I didn’t get the initiation prompts-it just showed a page with post new topic as the only option
I don’t seem to have any sort of forums options anywhere
I can’t create new groups (I made one but the option has dissapeared)
And help is GREATLY appreciated!
the site is seattlefashionprofessionals.com
Thanks @mercime I wondered what that other option in WordPress was for. Learn something new everyday. I guess it also makes sense that I could create a page template with the list of blog posts that could basically be like the normal blog index and style it however I want. Good stuff!
@jeremylyn I was surprised that it worked for me too. At least it told me it worked. Might just want to wrap the links to complete the courses in the is_user_logged_in() function and only display them if the user is logged in.
A new set of eyes always finds some bugs. That’s what we’re here for.
I am working on a site conversion for some friends of mine who currently have their site on smearedandsmudged.ning.com to smearedandsmudged.com. I am using WordPress 3.0, BuddyPress and some of the plugins listed here on buddypress.
I would like to know if there is a way to embed pictures within the group conversations, or the activity timeline.
For example if someone is posting about a cake they made in the group for cakes, that in the space of the post they could add a picture and the picture (not a link of the picture) is displayed.
Any advice is much welcomed!
Thanks!
If you want them to pay to get to that member page, try the s2member plugin. If you want them just to register (for free), then I think this is the thread with a bunch of possible solutions: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/how-to-make-a-private-community/
As far as the MP3 player, I don’t know, but I’m sure there are a ton of options. In this case, it wouldn’t need to be BuddyPress specific at all. Just search for an MP3 player that works with a webpage and it can be added to the WordPress page. There might even be a WordPress plugin that does this already.
Does child-theming of the BP Default theme (which resides in wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes) will work if I put the child theme in wp-content/themes?
Because if I update buddypress plugin with the wordpress update function … all templates in wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes will be deleted before the new version will bei installed!

The style sheet is a file that basically makes your site look pretty–it’s what controls the layout and the colors and the fonts and all that stuff. It sounds like you somehow downloaded and installed a corrupt version (or at any rate an incomplete version) of BuddyPress that was missing the style.css file.
If you did an automatic install through WordPress, I’d first try just uninstalling and reinstalling BuddyPress and see if that works. Otherwise, you’ll want to look through the files installed on your webhost for a file in your BuddyPress folder called something like style.css (at any rate, it’ll end with .css). If it’s not there, you’d need to add it. I can tell you more about how to do that, if you need, but try the automatic uninstall and reinstall first.
Sorry should have added above that I have now disabled the MU part of WordPress…
Thanks!
In object caching there is no option to turn off for logged in users (only wordpress admin)
There is an option to add pages and folders to a list not to cache but im not sure what or how to format what goes in there.

Try https://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes
I created my own child theme for Buddypress following those instructions.
“incorporate an article/post slideshow into the Thematic theme”
Getting the slideshow to work is more on the WordPress side … if you’re making a slideshow of the posts/articles in your site. BuddyPress doesn’t have anything to do with the slideshow … unless you’re making a slideshow of BP Gallery images or members or groups, etc.
Furthermore, since you’re using the Thematic theme (which has a BuddyPress-compatible version/adaptation), might I point you to the Thematic Forums since they can assist you better in choosing best slideshow/plugin for your site http://themeshaper.com/forums/
Hello,
I am new to WordPress and am interested in putting together a Buddypress community site with a magazine styled layout. I’ve been looking online for a way to incorporate an article/post slideshow into the Thematic theme using Buddypress but haven’t had any luck. Any suggestions on an article slideshow that works well with Buddypress?
Thanks
Mike
I am working on a Buddypress plugin install on WordPress 3. I am trying to setup the Buddypress registration to only allow new user signups from a specific domain (like: schoolname.edu). I have searched everywhere for a solution. I have installed a few WordPress plugins that are supposed to do this very thing – essentially whitelist a certain domain. However, this doesn’t seem to impact the buddypress / register page when I signup a test account. Any domain gets through.
I know WPMU has a built-in feature for “Limited Email Registrations” – and that’s exactly what I need – except I’m using regular WordPress.

Has anyone done this before? Please help! Thanks!
When you try emailing someone and it’s searching for the person you might want the header image disappears and an error message shows up in the recipient window:

then repeats a few times with incrementing line numbers…

Ok guys here is what I found may work. If you implement the two additional plugins into your site, you should never see the wp-admin page while using a buddypress site.
1. Be sure not to disable BuddyPress to WordPress profile syncing in Buddy Press settings. You want to link both the buddy press and word press site together
Now for the rest of the settings
2. Install Absolute Privacy
Under settings: Lockdown the site and Block admin access. For the “Redirect Non-logged in Users To:” part: enter your Login page permalink for My Login
3. Install Theme My Login
Under settings for Theme My Login: Put a 0 for Page ID and ensure the other 3 check boxes are selected, Pagelist, Links, and Stylesheet.
NOTE: In order to log out from your wordpress control panel you will need to click the link at the top left of your wordpress control panel to get back out to the buddy press site. You should still be logged in as your user in Buddy Press. Simply chose log out and viola you should not see the wp-admin. Test it out by entering a fake username/password, you should bounce back to buddypress login screen..
Same thing with the login procedure. You will need to log in through buddypress and click on “edit this entry” to get back to the wordpress control panel.
Another layer of wp-admin lockout may be to create a redirect for wp-admin and wp-admin.php
ALSO: It doesn’t seem like Buddy Press Sliding Login Plugin works with this setting so it may be wise to disable that feature. Be sure to backup, as results may vary. Proceed at your own discretion.
Same problem here. Running WP 3.0. Deactivated all my plugins and swiched to deafult WP theme before installing. I get the same message both when I upload via ftp and with a direct install through plugin search. I found this link but it didn’t really make me smarter http://hungred.com/how-to/sufficient-permissions-access-page-plugin-admin-page-update-wordpress-30/
Help please!
@govpate – check the latest version – https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-mu-secure-invites/
Which reminds to me to check out the latest update
Btw, the code I posted above works at least in WPMU install and WPMU upgraded to WP 3.0
My opinion 96 mb minimum…if you have a lot of plugins and traffic (mine is set at 128mb).
I’m using this plugin with BP to help figure out usage and I hope it will help you too:

I just saw this under BuddyPress FAQ:
Will this work on standard WordPress and WordPress MU?
Hi,
We plan to launch many social network sites using BuddyPress with “each site on a different domain”.
Yes! BuddyPress will run on both versions of WordPress. If you are using WordPress MU then BuddyPress will support the global tracking of blogs, posts and comments.
We plan to launch “multiple” social networks using BuddyPress.
Please help with the follwoing questions:
Q1: Should we use WordPress or WordPressMU with BuddyPress?
Q2: Since we plan to launch “multiple social network websites” using BuddyPress, which one is better for our situation and why?
Q3: Will all sites be linked together if we use WordPressMU with buddyPress?
Q4: Will using WordPressMU makes it easy to manage all sites?
Q5: Will using WordPressMU allow us to de-link individual sites later and transfer to other people on different hosts or will it be a problem if we use MU?
Q6: What else should we consider when making the decision between WordPress and WordPressMU to use with BuddyPress for multiple sites?
Q7: Will it be better just to use WPMU or WP with BuddyPress only for “one” site per account?
Thank you for your time and help.
Regards,
Rick
I usually forget about these and appreciated when others posted a reminder in the forum. So, I thought I’d take a turn posting the reminder.

Hi guys, I have a similar question, although with a different source. When I click any of the by buddypress automatically created buttons on my site, I get an url with “wordpress” in between. Example: http://www.beijingbikes.com/wordpress/members
I don’t know why this is happening, because in my settings, I set http://www.beijingbikes.com as the homepage (and not http://www.beijingbikes.com/wordpress). Therefore, when I click “home” it shows an error message. Also, my webstore doesn’t add the wordpress tag, so its definately bp related. Please help!
Thanks
