Hi everyone, I’m very impressed with the ease of the installation of WordPress and Buddypress. I need some help, I’m stumped! I did a clean install of WordPress 3.0.1 with Buddypress 1.2.5.2 with no problems from start to finish. I’m not a super tech I just happen to stumble upon this project and was drawn to it… All links work I can even add groups. But when I type in my url from a neighbors computer, smartphone, etc. I get a BLANK page? I have not activated any plugins yet. I installed it on my home server. I installed it to http://localhost/wordpress/ . Can someone help me? What am I missing?

Thanks in Advance, Fernando in Texas :)

    Hello,

I found the solution to the problem. If you have Bluehost and you are experiencing this problem, install this plugin:

Actually I disagree. I would suggest looking at Kaltura for video, and I think there is another media plugin that handles video and images although I haven’t experimented with either, I think that BP-albums is being updated to handle other types of media. If you can wait there is a very interesting plugin being developed as a Google Summer of Code project that will turn a WordPress / Buddypress install into an LMS, it has some interesting features and looks to be very extendable. I expect it will be like Buddypress itself and spawn a series of additional plugins that enhance its features. Have a look at it at:
    http://sushkov.wordpress.com/

Existing LMS systems do have a lot of pluses, but many are either difficult to customize and quite rigid (Moodle comes to mind) or very difficult to install and configure (Sakai project for example). That said, it may be easier to get a quick system up and running and your intended audience should reflect your choice of system as well. I find that most systems are aimed at older students (high school or university and beyond) and so do not fit what I hope to do with a learning system.

Hope this helps a little. All the best.

When I tried to access the example.com/blogs I got redirected to the mainpage. I read here that the solution is to create a network then when I created one the blogs appeared but all members where member to the base installed blog which is your wordpress site prior to the installment of BP. If a solution could just be pass regarding this…someone????

I am looking for a BP plugin to create a business directory. I used to have one on my old wordpress but not sure if compatible. I need these features. Simple form to fill out of company name, location, description, email and website link. (maybe a photo if possible) It should also have a search feature by categlory (I,e restauraunts, shopping, home improvement ect..) Would also be nice if companies can pay though paypal. I wish I remembered my old plugin’s name but it had these features I think. It can be backend where I ad it in or front end. There are only a a thousand of businesses, so I wouldn’t mind entering it myself if need be.

@wandilly, Did you get your problem resolved yet? If not, I’d be glad to help do detective work on it. I’d need a login though, so if you feel comfortable giving me access, you’d want to share that by private email. You can contact me at marian@heartwoodwebdesign.com.

    Hey all :)

I’m on the home stretch of getting my WP+BP site officially opened, and thought I’d post it here for critique. The idea of the site is a BP based community of buyers and sellers of crafts and “work-at-home-mom” (WAHM) made items, as well as hosting for WAHM shops using WP 3.0.1 in multiuser mode.

    http://www.clothunderground.com

The Community: based on Buddypress. Pretty self explanatory.

The Shops: each shop is a child blog of the main site. I’m using WP Custom CSS to allow users to make cosmetic changes to the Blix theme, and eShop for the eCommerce solution. WordPress seems pretty overwhelming to my users, so I’ve also written a custom library of tutorials (in the footer of the main site pages). I haven’t yet found a plugin that makes the hosting term payment/shop creation process automated, so I’m doing that manually at this time.

Extras: I know that I haven’t really done much in the way of customizing the default BP theme, but it’s only because I’ve been busy doing functional customizations…

    * The Street: I’m using the main site’s blog function as a classifieds post for members to buy/sell their used items on (a very popular feature for this type of audience). I’ve used Adminimize to limit what the users see on the add post screen, custom fields that allow them to enter URLs to 4 remotely hosted images (Photobucket), disabled file (image) uploading to keep my disk space, and another plugin to keep them from seeing everyone else’s posts in the admin panel post list.

    * Member Feedback System: It’s important on a site like this that buyers and sellers can leave feedback for one another with details on how the transaction went for others to see. I pieced something together (see the ridiculous process here: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/any-plugin-similar-to-ebays-user-feedback-member-rating-feedback) that seems like it will work beautifully! Check out the “feedback” button on my test user’s profile: http://www.clothunderground.com/members/test

    * Customized Groups Page: I just pieced this together the best I could. Nothing else out there was working for my audience, who are more often than not coming from vBulletin based sites. Buddypress’ group/forum system is still uber confusing for them, but this was the best I could do.

    * Sitewide Search: Using the Sitewide Search Pages plugin, I’ve created a child blog that pulls in info on posts published across the CU network. Shoppers are able to search using the form in the header, and browse a list of all CU shop items matching their search. There’s also a wordpress.com style tags page that displays all tags used in item posts sitewide, for a different shopping experience.

    * CU Points: I’m using Cubepoints and CP Buddypress integration to award points to members for activity. Normal members can use theirs to buy anything that anyone (in a CU shop or on The Street) is selling for points, and shop owners can use points to purchase featured shop ad space or up to 20% off of their hosting fees.

Anyway, please check it out and let me know what you think! Small changes might be happening throughout the day, but it’s pretty much ready for the world right now!

@hnla: Errr. You are definitely right. It was my late night coding that prevented code stripping when editing group description that stopped the upgrade.php script to function. Everything is working now. I just commented out my function and everything worked like a charm again. Thanks for sorting this out for me!

Is that ‘Line 4’ custom? I don’t see it in a functions file for a 1.2.5.2 I’ve just test upgraded.

Generally – and it’s not advise necessarily to follow :) – I have never had an issue with upgrading the WP portion of a site and don’t tend to bother deactivating any plugins; I do though take a backup, ALLWAYS, on production sites prior to proceeding.

@djpaul: I will from now on always disable all the plugins. :) Where can I disable the groups component through the FTP?

If you didn’t disable BuddyPress (and all other plugins) before upgrading WordPress, this might be a weird artifact, though it should usually clear after a page refresh. So… have you disabled the Groups component?

Also have the same problem with my local installation.

    1) Installed WordPress: Worked
    2) Got Buddypress as a plugin.
    3) Got a message, that the .htaccess could not be changed due to missing permissions, so changed the permissions, then no error message appears
    4) Choosed the Buddypress default theme
    5) Choosed the permalink options

= I also get tese 404 error messages (for example /wordpress/activity/)

Jet QuickPress is a plugin from Jettochkin based on my first plugin ‘BuddyPress Quickpress’.
One Quick Post is the ‘new version’ of BuddyPress Quickpress; the difference is that the plugin works for WordPress too (without BuddyPress), and has been improved.

As OQP (one quick post) is used to “power” my main plugin Your Classified Ads; you can be sure i will still update it :).

@hnla I have been following the thread, but it seems as if Boone’s been busy and he hasn’t been answering queries for a few days to a week. I’ve posted a number of times there and haven’t gotten a reply.

I’m not sure about splitting the JSON file at this point. I know that he’s mentioned that before. I am going to try a few things. I think because we have some other plugins on the same hosted about on another install of wordpress, that might be the issue. Will try it and see.

“Q1: Should we use WordPress or WordPressMU with BuddyPress?”

WPMU is now rolled in to single WP and called a Network of multiple sites, sometimes called multisite. You only need to enable it if you want multiple blogs(sites).

“Q2: Since we plan to launch “multiple social network websites” using BuddyPress, which one is better for our situation and why?”

If you have one install with multiple blogs, right now you can only install one instance of BuddyPress. It will show up on all the member sites, but share all the userbase.

“Q3: Will all sites be linked together if we use WordPressMU with buddyPress?”

I think I just answered this. Yes.

“Q4: Will using WordPressMU makes it easy to manage all sites?”

    It’s one codebase, so yes.

“Q5: Will using WordPressMU allow us to de-link individual sites later and transfer to other people on different hosts or will it be a problem if we use MU?”

THe individual sites you can just use the Export menu to get all the posts.

The buddypress parts can’t be exported that way.

“Q6: What else should we consider when making the decision between WordPress and WordPressMU to use with BuddyPress for multiple sites?”

If you need multiple sites or not and if you want the userbase separate, and how likely you’ll need the buddypress parts moved to a different site.

“Q7: Will it be better just to use WPMU or WP with BuddyPress only for “one” site per account?”

Again, it depends on what you ultimately want. The network of sites are individual on one codebase. Buddypress affects the whole network.

Any buddypress Guru here that can answer my questions?

That’s a fairly low-level error with the database object not being available; that is, of course, WordPress territory. If you deactivate your “backup program”, is this fixed?

Because it is assumed that before one installs BuddyPress, one would already have a working knowledge of WordPress basics :-) In any case, you can always add the “Meta Widget” to your sidebar and you have the link to admin. Or, if you might prefer a link to dashboard in bp admin bar – http://www.darcynorman.net/2009/11/13/modifying-the-buddypress-adminbar/

The groupblog is a really useful plugin – in fact I think it could even be the making/breaking of my site. However, like many, I am struggling to get it working with the latest versions of wordpress and buddypress.

Unfortunately, Marius (the author) has been inactive for a few weeks and there has been no word on when, or if, the plugin will be updated.

There seems to be a significant number of people interested in this plugin so I suggest we get together here to bat around some ideas. This may involve trying to find out Marius’ intentions, attempting to patch the plugin’s errors or something more radical.

    So – thoughts?

I have used the nginx settings described above but when I go to register an account it goes to the home page. To get to the register page i have to add index.php to get it to work. IE. http://url/index.php/register. http://url/register does not work. Is there something I am missing with nginx to get ride of the index.php. This also happens with the comments… but the comments at least show up.

yes I did follow all the steps exactly, and I added the lines to .htcaccess and wp-config.
I just checked my .htcaccess and it looks like this:

    # BEGIN WordPress

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteRule ^index.php$ – [L]

    # uploaded files
    RewriteRule ^([_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/)?files/(.+) wp-includes/ms-files.php?file=$2 [L]

    # add a trailing slash to /wp-admin
    RewriteRule ^([_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/)?wp-admin$ $1wp-admin/ [R=301,L]

    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f [OR]
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d
    RewriteRule ^ – [L]
    RewriteRule ^([_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/)?(wp-(content|admin|includes).*) $2 [L]
    RewriteRule ^([_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/)?(.*.php)$ $2 [L]
    RewriteRule . index.php [L]

    # END WordPress

So everything I added according to tools/network is there. What should I do now? I don’t think it’s the plugins. I already tried that. Where’s the option to show the blogs? I have been going through every single menu item over and over and I cannot find where I switched that off.
