    If you have other query_post loops running on the page, you might need to reset the loop.

    Use something like wp_reset_query(); after a query_posts loop or use a WP_Query loop, which doesn’t require resetting altogether:

    That was the first thing I tried. that did not work, not sure why. Any other ideas? If you follow the link to my original WordPress.org post, it shows how I did it exactly. For some reason it is not working.

    I’m after a Search plugin which searches Buddypress groups, forums and members AS WELL AS the standard WordPress posts and pages.
    This would be a lot cleaner than having a separate ‘blog search’.

    Use a query_posts loop:
    https://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/query_posts

    I’m quite sure that a plugin exists to do such a thing.

    I will be installing BP, but I would like to get this site working the way I want it to first to save on problems. Here is my issue:

    How do I show only posts from ONE SINGLE category?

    I posted about this already on wordpress.org, but can not get an answer. Please have a look if you think you can help. Thanks in advance:

    Doesn’t seem like there are any good plugins (or way to print) at all to deal with printing the activity stream, groups, or forums in BuddyPress
    I’m trying to have a custom PRINT CSS that excluded the admin-bar and also the STATUS UPDATE BOX from the activitystream/community page….

    So here is what I have so far…based on the WordPress Codex page… despite my inclusion of the #wp-admin-bar display none it still printing… any help would be appreaciated.

    /* Print */

    @media print {
    body {background:white;
    font-size:10pt;
    margin:0 }
    #sidebar { display:none }
    #header { display:none }
    #wp-admin-bar {display:none}
    #content{ margin-left:0;
    float:none;
    width:auto }
    .demo .red { color:black;
    font-weight:bold }
    #content a { font-weight:bold;
    color:#000066;
    text-decoration:underline }
    #content{ margin-left:0;
    float:none;
    width:auto }
    #footer { display:none }

    h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6 { page-break-after:avoid;
    page-break-inside:avoid }
    h3 { margin-left:10px;
    margin-bottom:0px;
    padding-bottom:0px }
    blockquote, table, pre { page-break-inside:avoid }
    ul, ol, dl { page-break-before:avoid }
    img.centered { display: block;
    margin-left: auto;
    margin-right: auto; }
    img.right { padding: 4px;
    margin: 0 0 2px 7px;
    display: inline; }
    img.left { padding: 4px;
    margin: 0 7px 2px 0;
    display: inline; }
    .right { float: right; }
    .left { float: left }
    img { page-break-inside:avoid;

    Will this do what you need… it lets you (as admin) directly add members to a group:

    when you activate the Buddypress default theme, the archives page disappears, it just says

    Archives
    Do not edit this page
    Edit this entry (<< which is a link to edit the page)

    When you reactivate the WordPress default theme, it appears fine again.

    1 – WP Version 3.0, BP version 1.2.5.2
    2 – I cannot locate an .htaccess file anywhere. I did some reading online and found that the .htaccess file doesnt exist unless needed by wordpress for permalinks? If this is the case perhapos the godaddy permissions are not allowing this file to be created? If thats true, I can call godaddy and ask them about this, unless you know how to enable this functionality?
    3 – Theme – Standard BP Theme | Plugins: A lot, but I had tried disabling them and getting the same error. Here is the list: Add Logo to Admin, Akismet (disabled), AWPCP, BP Events (Disabled), BuddyPress, BuddyPress Community Stats, Email Login,
    Fast and Secure Contact Form, Google XML Sitemaps, Jet Event System for BuddyPress (Disabled), Members Only, Secure WordPress,
    SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam, Welcome Pack, WP-Mail-SMTP
    4 – Godaddy, shared, Windows ( ica change off of windows if needed, this is not critical for me)

    Oh man, barking like a dog would have fixed it ;) Oh well…

    1) What versions of WordPress and BuddyPress?
    2) What are the file permissions on .htaccess? Can the webserver write to it? If you do have to change the permissions, then after doing so, go back into WordPress and change the permalink settings to something else. Then set it back to what you wanted the permalink to be and try again (this will re-write the relevant part of the htaccess).
    3) What other plugins are you running? What theme are you using? If it’s custom, what sort of thing do you have in its functions.php?
    4) What type of GoDaddy hosting are you using?

    If you’re using WPMU aka Multisite on GoDaddy, as far as I can tell, you’re in for a lot of trouble :(

    the upload is fine, but when using default crop selection, final image is different

    both group avatar and user avatar same problem

    user select file and upload, avatar is fine so user don’t move crop box, click on crop image and then it shows up as different final selection

    I was looking for the exact same thing as @rossagrant when I found this thread (a basic empty custom tab that admins can add content to). I’ve tried using the Group Extension API per the documentation, but the code seems to be unaware of the API when it gets processed. I get an error saying it doesn’t know what BP_Group_Extension is. If I remove the extends from my class, it falls over at the bp_register_group_extension call.

    I have put the sample code word-for-word in my bp_custom.php file (per @boonebgorges).

    I am a developer, but am new to wordpress/buddypress dev. I’m using latest versions of WP/Buddpress.

    Thanks for any pointers.

    Hi,

    I am creating my own child theme. In order to do this, I have created a new blank functions.php in my newly created child theme folder (located in /wp-content/themes/ ). I added a couple of new functions to the new functions.php, to enable activity as frontpage, and to add another sidebar, but then realised that pressing the log in button (which had been working before) produced a blank screen. The wordpress text editor also stopped working (saving edits resulted in a blank screen).

    I retraced my steps, removing the functions 1 by 1, but even a blank file produced the same results. When I revert back to the default functions.php, by deleting the child version, everything works fine.

    When I start over, I can get one or two functions working, briefly, then they break, and I can’t even get the blank file to work, as before…

    Can anyone point me in a good direction for troubleshooting?

    Thanks!

    Jimmy

    @bennadler The problem with doing it that way (in BuddyPress core) is for installs where /wp-content/ is moved out of the WordPress root and located somewhere else, which is a common configuration for the more security minded folks.

    That fix will work for most everyone else however.

    If you create a custom post type called groups, or whatever you have chosen for a groups slug and then create a custom post type titled the same as a group name you can use the post editor in the admin to update the home page of any group. Basically you are creating the same URL to this content.

    This will remove the activity from the front page of your groups. Create a file in your themes folder called front.php.

    themes folder/groups/single/front.php

    Then in front.php just add a wordpress loop or any other content you wish. You can use the single.php loop or create a loop for your custom post type.

    I love bp fb connect because it pulls the Facebook avatar image into buddypress.

    I’m using Simple Facebook Connect http://ottopress.com/wordpress-plugins/simple-facebook-connect/ because of all the widget options. However it doesn’t pull the facebook avatar into buddypress.

    Has anyone figured out or does anyone know how to merge these two plugins or add the avatar scripts into SFC.

    Thanks A bunch

    OK, I am a total newb at this switch-over from WP standalone to BP, but I sure hope this community can help me.

    1and1.com is my hosting
    I successfully loaded WP 3.0
    I have successfully activated the multisite capability (I see the superadmin panel, and all options are available)
    I used FTP to place the extracted BP plugin 1.2.5.2 into my wp-content/plugins folder
    When I log into my WP site as admin, and go to plugins, I see BP there and have the choice to click “network activate”
    BEFORE clicking that I ensured that .htaccess has the mod_rewrite enabled [see my pasted in .htaccess file below]
    I then logged out and logged back in to admin, and went to activate the plugin, but immediately get the following error message:
    “Error 500 – Internal server error”

    PLEASE HELP THE NEWB! Thanks! Jerry

    P.S. is it any clue that a “buddypress.tmp” file with filesize zero appears in my /wp-contents/plugins folder?

    @dlittle800 Try disabling all plugins and use default settings.

    What version of wordpress and buddypress are you using?

    @hnla You raise an interesting point about plugin development vs core development. Speaking from the point of view of someone who makes a living off of WP and BP-related development, I can note that it’s often quite easy to justify the development of plugin-type functionality for a client. The client’s job needs a specific type of functionality not available in, or appropriate for, the core of BP, so it makes sense for them to pay to have it developed as an add-on. From there it generally takes just a bit of extrapolation and cleanup to turn that add-on into something that can be released as a plugin in the WP repo. (If you’re really lucky, like I am, you have paying clients who actually *encourage* these cleanup and extrapolating steps in plugin development.)

    It’s a bit harder to bill for core-type development, since so much of core development involves extensive bug testing on a wide variety of different server and software configurations – something that isn’t really required for a specific client project.

    Still, this all makes me think about Andy’s awesome post from last year, “Give a Little”: http://apeatling.wordpress.com/2009/09/25/give-a-little/. Now that I’m starting to catch up from my month-long break from BP (honeymoon ftw), I personally am going to start devoting more time to the core project, which I understand broadly as this buddypress.org community as well as the ongoing core development on trac.buddypress.org.

    There are a couple ways to make themes for BuddyPress.

    One way is to make a child theme for bp-default. Instructions can be found here: https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/building-a-buddypress-child-theme/ This is a good option because it’s relatively simple, but it will restrict you to some extent to the general structure of the bp-default theme.

    Another way is to integrate BP features into your own Svelt theme. The BuddyPress Template Pack will help you do that. https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-template-pack/ Basically, it provides the extra templates necessary (on top of your existing WP templates) to run BuddyPress functionality. Follow the Template Pack instructions carefully on a test installation, and see what you think. Once you’ve gone through the Template Pack setup, you can start customizing the way that BP integrates with your theme to your liking – but BPTP will give you a nice headstart.

    Hi,

    I would like to install the Buddypress plugin on my WordPress site http://www.cabbagemedia.com/campsites but I’m worried it will wipe out my existing theme for the default Buddypress theme.

    Is this the case, or will the Svelt theme I’m using be able to integrate the Buddypress features. Because of the nature of my blog, I find Svelt is the best.

    Thank you

    I also have the same problem as u Ky, but Im running it on a local server. I also check my email account and there are no whatsoever emails from bp after I finished filling up the form in the registration, do we need to run bp online to test it, although there is an online demo, i need to check it b4 doing it on an actual online site?? BTW, It also shows up in my dashboard’s users.

    Also, I wanted to ask if BP needs to have MU enabled?? Im using it in wordpress 3 (they say it has MU in it also) and buddypress.1.2.5.
    I tried using Buddypress on wordpress 3 (wwithout enabling mu) and it works fine and the only prob was that the registration doesn’t work the way it did like when I register here at BP forum.

    I hope someone can help us with the problem. Thanks to u all.. ^_^V
    Really sorry if this is a super newbie question..

    Right – so I found it but I have to bloody FTP into my server to get to it? WHat the heck is buddypress doing here? If I go into my theme editor in wordpress, the only index.php file I see is some buddypress shenenegins, and not my real front page. Am I going to have to use FTP from now on to edit it?

    What if I want to get rid of buddypress?
