If you’re speaking more about distance education and e-learning, I invite you to look at a few resources on my site:

PJ mentions the Scholarpress plugin, which, I agree, is a bit faulty at the moment. But keep track of the Google Summer of Code project that looks to blend Scholarpress with BuddyPress and improve its features as well:
http://thecorkboard.org/gsoc-buddypress-and-sp-courseware/
I think a lot of what you want to accomplish is inherently available within BuddyPress. Meetings could equate to groups. Conferences could be a specific BuddyPress site with some features on or off. I’ve found that looking at BuddyPress – and WordPress for that matter – with a different lens has expanded my perspective on what this software can really do.

When you integrated this with Thesis what version of BuddyPress were you using? Were you using WordPress MU or regular WordPress?
I’ve been playing around with this today. I am running regular WordPress 2.9.2 with Thesis 1.6 (need to try 1.7 but he really changed things there).
I installed the BuddyPress Template Pack plugin and went to work.
I don’t think you do the thing with the bp-custom.php file anymore, right?
I followed the instructions and copied all of the templates to my /wp-content/themes/thesis_16/ folder.
Then I started digging into how Thesis outputs its content and started updating all of those templates with different HTML markup and calls to Thesis functions to get headers, footers, and sidebars, etc.
So I got the pages like Members, Groups, Activity, etc. looking OK, but not pretty. There is going to be a TON of CSS development needed to make this look as pretty as it all does here.
The thing I’m not yet clear on is how to get it all to flow under one tab like it does here with the Community tab?
And I have LOTS of other questions….and work to do to make it fully functional and tightly integrated into the navigation and flow of the site.
Is it even worth it I’m wondering?
Just thought I’d share. I’d love to find out someone has already done ALL of this and can provide instructions, or files…would be worth something I think!

You might enjoy 37 Signal’s service called Campfire or Basecamp for team/staff interactions: http://37signals.com/
I heard about https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/scholarpress-courseware/ in the blogosphere lately. I wasn’t impressed with how it worked so I took it off my beta site. I hope one of both of these will help.
Make sure you actually do have WP Super Cache uninstalled and removed:

@holgria – don’t know what WP/MU version you’re using … dsader’s code below from mu.wordpress.org forums is working for me in WPMU 2.9.2 (subdirectory and subdomain structures) placed in mu-plugin folder

As always, backup your DB first.
A little further explanation: I am setting this site up for my family. I did not want to create a public forum, mainly because I don’t want our family discussions publicly viewable. So I had set my original group up as private. Since I did not have a public group, I was unable to post anything from the “Forums” tab (Group Forums Directory) since private groups are not shown in the drop-down menu there. This is where the confusion arose and why I started this topic. It was not until we set up a public group that we figured out that it was set up this way on purpose. So since our site will not have any public groups, I have disabled bbPress Forums from the BuddyPress Component Setup in the WordPress Dashboard.
eventually, I don’t know what the problem was, but I decided to upload everything from ubuntu instead of windows. Hopefully I have managed to do it without any problem…

hi,
how to find and replace test in frontend? site wide text change plugin change test only admin area. any other plugin, to change text in frontend side.
for example, in this site top menu, Blog tab is there. i need to change Blog to See-All-Blog same as Groups change to Community.
this all do only plugin stuff not change directly in theme or other. is it possible?
(wordpressmu 2.9.2, buddypress 1.2.3. and use default buddypress theme.)
tell me your suggestion.
@LPH2005 good see you’ve fixed the headers already sent error earlier. I just checked out ExamView and and it looks like a great add-on for a school site. Thank you
EDIT – per your 1st post re suggestions:
1. Changing too-wide login to horizontal login under header – here’s some HTML and CSS you could try – adjust accordingly or let me know if it needs some tweaking
2, The right column looks good in home page but takes over content space which is more important imho in the inside pages.
thanks for your help. was able to access dashboard through /wp-admin/ and then deactivate plug ins.
@thegreatdaysho – Login to your FTP and navigate to /wp-content/plugins. Rename the BuddyPress Template Pack plugin directory to something else. Then reload your site.
FYI, I deleted your other topic because of double posting.
it says error 404-page not found when I tried
@thegreatdaysho
Try to disable the plugins by removing them from the /wp-content/plugins/ folder
i installed buddypress 1.2.4.1 to wordpress 2.9.2 and then installed a buddypress template pack. i now can’t log into my wordpress adminpanel/dashboard. when i try to log into the back end, it takes me to the front end of my sight. please help!
Hello,
What I am trying to do is get data from my wordpress database based on the current buddypress user id. This is inside member-header.php inside /wp-content/themes/mytheme/members/
http://pastebin.com/9ZHN7qHt
I get the error on the http://mysite.tld/members/membername page:
WordPress database error: [You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ‘AND meta_key= ‘facebook_uid” at line 1]
SELECT meta_value FROM wp_usermeta WHERE user_id = AND meta_key= ‘facebook_uid’
I am using a very similar query in the header of my main wordpress theme files so the syntax shouldn’t be wrong.
Any ideas on this would be greatly appreciated.
I just installed buddypress to my wordpress blog, and then installed the bb press forum to it, but where do I go from here to actually set up the forum?! I edited the bb-config.php file with my database details, but what next?! Sorry for being a total newbie!
Just try it. As long as it is built using the correct WordPress hooks and does things in the right way, it will work with BuddyPress.
If it doesn’t work per mercime’s post, report it as a bug on https://trac.buddypress.org/ using your user login from this site please.
No, It doesn’t work. I also tried to create a bp-custom.php plugin following these instructions:
https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/install-buddypress-on-a-secondary-blog/
Any other suggestion?
Thanks
Memory requirements vary from server to server so we can’t declare a minimum requirement as it probably will be inaccurate. It’s probably worth mentioning that WordPress 3.0 itself gets very close to 32Mb on a typical server (there was a ticket in the wordpress trac).
Has anyone tried integrating CoSign single sign on (SSO) with BuddyPress?
Specifically, any thoughts on the issues / problems of using something like: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/cosign-sso/
Thanks, Roger
Unless otherwise specified, BP will install in main site when you activate it. In order for BP to work in subsite, you have to add the following to your wp-config.php file
define ( ‘BP_ROOT_BLOG’, $blog_id );
so if you want to install BP in site2, then do this
define ( ‘BP_ROOT_BLOG’, 2 );
Hi,
I’d like to keep my main blog (site 1) and installing Buddypress in another blog (site 2) with an URL such as http://example.com/comunidad/
“Site 1” should use my customized theme, while “Site 2” should work with “Buddypress default” theme. However once I’ve installed Buddypress, “Site 1” gets blank. If I copy the Buddypress default theme’s folders (Activity, groups, etc) inside my customized theme, “Site 1” works, but instead of showing its own content, I get the Buddypress activity.
¿What should I do in order to avoid “Site 1” to be blank, but without rendering the Buddypress activity?
Thank you very much.
If I remember correctly, the “ranked” achievements (i.e. 1, 10, 100 posts) might have appeared three times, but it looks more like a bug. However, Achievements doesn’t work with anything more recent than BuddyPress 1.1.3(?) and some earlier version of WordPress, perhaps 2.8(?). I’m working on a new version.
