Hello everyone,
I was running into a problem with mediawiki not loading, and so I disabled all of the plugins for wordpress. While this allowed mediawiki to work, now I am not able to enable BuddyPress. Instead, I get the following error.
Plugin could not be activated because it generated 2 characters of unexpected output
How can I go about fixing this issue?

Update: This is a WordPress 3.0-beta2-14676 installation that was working until I deactivated the plugins. I’ve also uploaded the bleeding edge version of BP and also get the same error.
@Joey hey man I just figured out that there’s instructions on this page: you simply upload the .php file you download here to the /mu-plugins/ folder. And viola it works!

@jackreichert-
If you are asking where to start in helping turn WP / BP into a distributed social networking platform, I cannot say. That is currently not in the works. It would require a major rewriting of WordPress’ foundational core. If you are asking about the project I reference in my post, then it’s best to email me separately as that is beyond scope for the BuddyPress forums.
But, there may be a middle ground. A few of us are in the beginning stages of thinking about semantifying BuddyPress with the possible goal of enabling BP to use WebIDs as an alternative to OpenID, and to encode other semantic markup to enable BP networks to join the growing number of Linked Data applications.
I find it a bit annoying that the developers are so hesitant to speak on the matter, as it’s clearly a reappearing debate. Should that be interpreted as indecision, still?
Last I heard, bbPress was going to be rewritten into a native WordPress plug-in, taking advantage of custom pages and all that jazz. mmMMMm, smooth. Probably a year away though?
In my comments on this subject I tend to be a tad too negative towards BuddyPress. In truth, it provides me with all the *essentials* right here and now, I just feel it could be quite a bit better, without all too much effort.
I am using wordpress 2.9.2 and buddypress 1.2.3
Hi, I am new both to buddypress as well as wordpress, so i am not sure if this is the right place to ask…but I have a few questions. If someone can help me with them or guide me to the right place, it would be very helpful.
1. The groups that will be created should be available to all users of the site without the need to join the group. I do not want them to have any joining option
2. I would like a few recently active threads from forum on any group – both sticky as well as non-sticky – to appear on the group’s main display page as well.
3. I want to change the permalink style for both groups and forums. Instead of “/community/groups” or “/group”, i would like some option of my own; and likewise in case of “/forum”.
4. I want to add some extra fields in the description section of the groups.
5. I want to add some extra sections in the user’s profile section
6. For the groups, I want to straightaway upload data in the phpmyadmin backend using a excel uploader where-in I have data for all the groups I want to be auto-created once I upload the excel data into the table. My question on this is -> is it possible to do it this way? Also, can these groups have some default threads automatically created?
i had some other problems that i was able to solve on my own. just mentioning them here in case someone else needs a hand with them
Solved issues:
1. implementing autosuggest in the search field
2. Wanted the users to have their username as profile handlers, i.e. their profile-url to be “website.com/username”
3. When a user logs in, which page should he be redirected to.
its perfectly fine if there are no direct plugin options available for any or all of the problems, but even if i could be pointed in the right direction as to how and which files need to be edited, I might be able to do that on my own. I do have some knowledge of php.
Please help a noob. Much appreciated.
It sounds like a permalink issue. @malik, you said that when you switched your WP permalinks to something other than the default, WP stopped working. It’s probably the case that your provider is missing mod_rewrite or otherwise does not have the correct server configuration to support WP permalinks (which are, in turn, required for BP). Here is the page on permalinks from the WP Codex; there are technical details in the second part of the page: https://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks
Recently installed BP 1.2.3. onto my live site (hosted by Siteground), running WP 3.0 beta. All other WP pages work fine with any kind of permalink settings, but All my BP links return a 404 error, no matter what I do – includes admin bar as well as http://www.mysite.com/members/, http://www.mysite/groups/ etc.
I had this working fine on my local computer using Xampp, so why does the same plugin, the same WP version, the same Db on the live server not work? If this was a Buddypress 1.2.3 incompatibility with WordPress 3.0 I could understand that, but I cannot figure out why it doesn’t work on my live server. Do I need to change something? Please help. Thanks
i checked the permalinks when buddypress is disabled.
default works, the rest doesn’t.
i have, however, other wordpress-blogs with the same hosting-provider and they do have the pretty permalinks.
trying to copy the htaccess file from a working blog, didn’t help.
i guess this is not really a buddypress problem after all?
update:
i added index.php to the permalink ( /index.php/%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/) and now the blog works. with the permalinks. but still no buddypress.
So in my case I find the problem of why “upload avatar” doesn’t work.
It’s because of the BuddyPress Template pack plugin. When I use the bp default theme everything works perfectly.
When I use any wordpress theme that I made compatible with BuddyPress using the plugin bp Template pack I find exactly the same problem: Avatar Upload, private message, register… all of that doesn’t work… as soon as you click on the button “Submit” or “Crop” you go back to the same page and nothing happen?! It’s like the information wasn’t given at all…
There is a conflict somewhere that I can’t find!
Any Ideas???
[EDIT] Ok I solved the problem!!!
Ok so if none of the solution you have in this topic works for you it’s probably because you have a conflict between a js script in your default theme and a js script in your wordpress theme… take a minute tu disable all the js action in your wordpress theme ton test if it’s coming from there…
I changed the default role to contributer. I set my business partners profile to contributer. I logged in as him and I don’t see anywhere I can create posts. The blogs tab is empty and says he has no blogs. It also says he has no posts. And on both of those pages, there’s nowhere to create a post.
Am I missing some other setting?
BTW, I’m using WordPress 3.0 Beta, not MU.
Go to admin side of your blog then click from left menu Settings -> Miscellaneous Settings — I don’t think this menu is available in WordPress MU, am I missing something?
Please don’t bump your own thread three hours after your initial post. 24 hours is a good duration before bumping again.
As for your question, set the WordPress default role to “Contributor” (https://codex.wordpress.org/Settings_General_SubPanel) and the member should be able to post. Though your member will have to use the WordPress dashboard to post, unless you use a front-end posting plugin.
I want my members to be able to write blogs, but within the main buddypress site. I do not wish for them to have fully functioning wordpress sites outside of the buddypress site.
What do I need to do?
Doesn’t something like this already exist?
Secure Invites for WPMU (not standard WP)
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-mu-secure-invites/
There should be other similar types of plugins as well.
Just do a search in the WP plugin repository.
update: my web host said that the database password had been corrupted. but after changing it and installing BP the same blank page occurred.
eor highlights the other difference. Some plugins were designed for WPMU and won’t work with WP and vice versa. So, the plugins you want to use should be part of the decision also.
the same, the only difference is the blog creation.
Hey everyone,
I have no idea if I should be using wordpress or wordpress mu for buddypress. Are there major advantages to one over the other. I know that in order for your users to have blogs you need to have MU but I’m still unsure if I want them to have that capability. I also really need to disable user registrations and make it ian invite only site. I found a plugin for that but it can only be used with MU.
So which is better for Buddypress?
Thanks for you help,
Daniel
@Jeff_Sayre I’d like to get involved if I can. I’ve been developing for wordpress for a while and would like to see how I can get involved in bp. Where would you recommend I start?
wordpress multi-user, and users have opened in various blogs BuddyPress How can I sign up?
Select a blog that will record only
For example: autos.example.com / register
a member of that blog will only
Not a main blog
@deltina more than 2 cents
Facebook has been hacking up technologies for a while (fbml for instance)…
I’ve been programming wordpress for a while now, but am relatively new to buddypress. Please correct me if i’m wrong, but isn’t the buddypress news feed built on such an feed? I turned to this community because I think that many of the pieces are in place already. I’m happy to devote what time I can to pushing such a project along.
@group what’s the first step?
I think the first stage, end-goal, is to create a way for connecting across-networks…
