Yes, I’m trying to style the comments of a particular group a little differently. The community I’m building is for users and potential clients of a membership-based service. Anyone can sign up, but I’d like to give commenters who are actual members of the service a little bit of a different treatment, so their comments carry more weight. I’m envisioning a small icon that overlays their gravatars indicating they are members.

For the moment I had planned on using xprofile data for this. I don’t have groups enabled (yet), but if we use them in the future, I would like to make them user-controlled for smaller interest groups (whereas membership to this group would be more admin-controlled). We have an external database with the names of all members in it, but I’m not yet sure how to cross-check with that database when users sign up (or if that’s even possible!).

Maybe xprofile data is not the best way to go about this? I know there are role options in WordPress, would this maybe be a better way to handle this? My main concern is ensuring maximum flexibility as the site develops.

In wordpress, I have set my Permalinks to
    /%category%/%postname%/

Would that have any effect on my buddypress as well? How do I fix it though? :-(
I cant really change the permalinks settings now as it will generate hundreds of 404 errors from search engines.

BuddyPress Album+ is awesome! In my humble opinion…

    Test here: http://bptest.flweb.it

Download it from https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-album/ or search for it from your wp plugins menu.

Thesis and BuddyPress do not work well together (yet). There are some good threads about BP and Thesis on the Thesis support forums. You might want to start reading there.

Have you guys tried setting your permalinks to something other than the default?
    https://codex.wordpress.org/Settings_Permalinks_SubPanel

When you’ve tried a different setting, also see if a .htaccess file is generated in your WordPress root directory.

    Hi

BuddyPress is just a set of plugins for WordPress. Installing BuddyPress won’t loose any of your existing data. Of course, back up all your files and database first just in case!

Reading your post, I think the answer is “hire a theme developer to make it look right.”

First of all, you need to get a test server (even if it’s locally on your machine) setup with a base WordPress install with your theme and then install BuddyPress and then this.

There will be changes which you’ll need to adapt to, but the above-linked BP Template Pack plugin should get you started (or at least let you assess whether the changes are something you can do or whether it’s something you need to hire a developer for).

I’m interested in giving our members at http://www.rockstartriathlete.com more social networking capability, but want the installed Buddypress to stay true to our current theme. So when I install Buddypress, should I install it into a new directory or into the existing directory? Will it automatically integrate with our current theme, or do I need to hire a developer to make it look right? Has anyone “added” Buddypress to an existed WordPress site to add a social networking component to that site, without losing the already existing site content?

    Thanks!

I was directed to a plug in that fixes or makes the addition of tabs easier. Install the Page Links To by Mark Jaquith or go to http://txfx.net/wordpress-plugins/page-links-to/ It works great!

I installed the BuddyPress plug in to my WordPress 2.9.2 and it works great. I had an adsense plug in install and it works with what was there before (blog pages), but all the new BuddyPress stuff like members pages, activity stream etc, do not have the adsense in them. Is the a fix for this, a plug in perhaps? Thanks!

Take it for what it’s worth. By many accounts in reply to this discussion:
    http://buddypress.org/community/groups/miscellaneous/forum/topic/the-buddypress-ui-design-and-conceptual-approach-to-social-networking/

For WordPress, I know only two types of ‘posts’ a user can make, and I like it that way:
Rich, and plain. Strictly technically speaking, no other type of post exists. A horde of different options for display, permissions etc. still applies (like the difference between ‘post’ and ‘page’).

    Typical blog post:

    – Rich blog post (usually close to a proper ‘article’ or ‘story’)
    > plain comment
    > plain comment
    –> plain comment
    –> plain comment
    > plain comment

The blog post is commonly well written and formulated with the mindset that it is content, mainly for people to read and react to, but not so much add to.

    Typical forum post:

There is none is there? But this is just as good an example as any:

    – Rich post (thread starter; commonly posts a question or problem to be solved)
    > plain comment
    > plain comment
    > rich post
    > plain comment
    > rich post

What most forum posts have in common though (“stickys” are usually the exception) is that the thread-starter expects participants to add significant value to the thread. In fact, the starting topic is often just a question, awaiting detailed response. You can start with a plain post with rich content added to it later.

    Simple pros & cons

    Blogs
+ The key contents are usually found in the top article alone.
    – Users are blocked from adding rich content.
    – Insightful as some comments might be, they are much less likely to be read than the blogpost itself.

    Forums
+ “Every post is equal”; Equality fosters collaboration. Knowing that your reply will be read, you speak your mind in full.
+ Users can add to the value of the thread by attaching rich content.
    – Valuable information and media gets lost in the midsts of long threads.
    – Forums have a hard time encouraging concise writng.

I think the technical design between the two can easily co-exist as one and the same, while maintaining (and adding to) the strengths in their differing use-cases and common form.

    Roles

The forum is the place for discussion of all things, including blog posts. No discussable item escapes the forum.
A ‘blog post’ is just a particular way of displaying a rich article, with certain conventions applied to the form of comments.
(an ‘update’ is a form of microblogging, i.e. just a particular way of displaying a plain article)

    Visibility

First off, the way to create a ‘board’ can be done with many different metrics: display all ‘threads’ within a certain ‘category’, ‘tag’, ‘group’, or a more finely tuned mix and match of each, even specific to each board.

    In-practice Example #1

So say you have the BuddyPress group, with the tabs ‘Blog’, ‘Activity Stream’ and ‘Forum’.

    I make a blogpost called:
“Rants for $0, free all weekend!”

In the blog section, it appears like you’d expect.., it’s a blog post, on top of other blog posts, and if you ‘read more’ you see the simple box for comments at the bottom.

In the forum, it appears like this in the ‘latest topics’ section:
    > “Rants for $0, free all weekend!”
    > Posted in: Blog; By: ; Latest: ; 4 minutes ago

You won’t find it in any category unless you have created a category for the ‘blog’ type (which one might do to create an alternative way of browsing the blog archive). It can already be found where people expect it: In the group’s blog section.
On the other hand, if a blogpost is in the ‘development’ category, and a ‘board’ (just a way to collect all posts with a certain labeling, remember?) happens to collect all posts in that category, it will appear there, just like any other forum post.

The ‘wire’ (I think that’s what I’m referring to anyways. A ‘wall’, in other words) would work in the same manner, except for the wire you only deal in plain posts and maybe an enforced character cap. Personally I’d probably refrain from using the activity stream unless it was in conjunction with other social networks like Facebook and Twitter; that way I’d have more incentive to make a special form of brief updates.

    In-practice Example #2

    The traditional way:
John is the author of the “Rant Enhancement Plugin” (it’s really just a smiley-pack of mixed emotions). He has just released the beta of a new version that could really use some feedback. Not a whole lot of people frequent his plugin (group) listing. He’d like more exposure, but it makes no sense to post outside the domain of his own group when he’s got this nice piece of space dedicated to his work already. Instead he posts in two places: One elaborate post in the group as the call for feedback, and another post in the dedicated ‘Extensions’ and ‘Features’ boards, just briefly directing interested users to the main thread.

    Better way:
With the use of ‘boards’ and their keywords detection for grouping of contents, John’s call for feedback would appear anywhere relevant.

    —

I have more thoughts on threaded conversations, organization of rich vs plain content etc., but I’d rather deal with it one discussion at a time. What I’m trying to address here is merely the visibility of blogposts vs forumposts, and ways to encourage continuity and exposure of threaded discussion. One last thing to bear in mind: I did not take the time to fill in every single conceptional gap. When you spot a hole, I’d recommend trying to suggest a solution for it before you call it a flaw (the abuse of keywords to appear everywhere for instance, is amendable).

To anyone who reads these words without having skipped through any of the above, I commend you.

@Scotm (“Give me a P2 groupblog with a cleaned up groups feature and BuddyPress is relevant again…”)

That’s kinda where I’m trying to get to. Marius Ooms as well. One of my frustrations is that I can’t figure out how to put the ‘group blog home’ on the ‘group home’ page itself without breaking the Ajax. The connection between group and group blog is very unclear. Still need to work on that… Also managing all the different settings is unwieldy. This plugin helps, but it would be nice if it all was part of the core, integrated with better management.

I use it on Web2NewYork.com. You’d have to register to test it, which you’re welcome to do. The site is mostly for event registration. Members so far ignore the blog/group/posting features…

So, yeah, I’m used to NING, it was pretty easy but really lacked the thing I was looking for which was a seamless WordPress integration. I messed around with some Ning comment integration plugin but it was pretty useless and once they stated the pricing changes I decided its time to move.
So, I have my buddypress community started. I must say its a little more involved in setting up something that’s decent. I tried integrating it into my existing wordpress theme but it just looked like junk. Not being real savy I decided to just change themes to a bp theme. Not real easy either as I had made a number of customizations which I had to go back over. Anyway, I managed a descent looking setup but the biggest thing concerning me is some things I would think core functions in a community. Photos, Albums (Plural) and events.

I realize there are Plugins for these things and I try to research them all but then I get confused. I wonder what one is best? Which one will continue to be developed and which one will get phased out and I’ll be stuck with it. I’m afraid of using one and then having a bunch of photos uploaded from members and then telling them, “oh, sorry gotta change plugins, your photos will be deleted.” I’m not sure which event calendar is popular or if one is still even being developed.

Could I get some input on whats the safest options to go and what people are using in general. A list of essential plugins maybe? I see alot of potential with buddypress but I think there is alot of functionality I’m overlooking because it comes in the form of a plugin and I don’t even know whats good and whats not.
    thanks

@jivany (“I don’t understand your BP forum complaints. You don’t use forums because you have basically replicated the forum concept in blog posts/comments”)

Exactly! My point is that integrating an external forum like bbPress into Buddypress is unnecessary and only creates a lot of confusion, undermines the structure. Less is more. KISS.

I would like Buddypress to consolidate on the smallest number of parts, leverage what’s already in WordPress, instead of adding database tables and external scripts that partly overlap/clash with other parts.

But bbPress seems to be taking over Buddypress. Wrong direction imho. :-(
