    Or I guess, could I strip out the header and footer in the BuddyPress template and create a Page Template in my main WordPress site that pulls the BuddyPress template parts into it???

    Thanks guys!

    @hnla:)

    @clarki and @somethingforkaty – these are not BP issues but permalinks in WP. Go to your admin panel and set the permalinks. See step 3 here: https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/setting-up-a-new-installation/

    Here is the information on “pretty” permalinks: https://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks

    Watch the .htaccess after permalinks set in /wp-admin

    I think the ‘afaik’ would need to be confirmed wouldn’t it? otherwise we are simply being asked to speculate based on little actual information.

    What do you mean by ‘web folder space’ ?

    Was this change apparent after an update to 1.2.6 or did it simply happen for no apparent reason.

    Logs are always a good place to start looking for answers.

    You just need to create a new page with a custom page template and assign this new page as the front page:
    https://codex.wordpress.org/Creating_a_Static_Front_Page#Creating_a_Static_Front_Page

    Once you’ve done this, “Activity” should automatically be added to the nav menu (I think!).

    With the limited exception of BP groups, BuddyPress offers only one role — that of user. The forums are controlled by bbPress code, integrated into BuddyPress, but it’s bbPress that is in control of offering additional roles. Even when bbPress is relaunched as a WordPress plugin, forum roles will still be controlled by bbPress.

    BuddyPress is a social layer that sits on top of WordPress. As such, the notion of user and author are synonymous. What does all of this mean?

    With the exception for BP groups mentioned above, BuddyPress is a user-centric platform where there are currently no-jointly owned or controlled subsets of data. Ignoring the overall Site Administrator, in BuddyPress, there is a one-to-one relationship between a given piece of datum and a single owner of that datum. The key is who owns data. That person is the one with ultimate control (ignoring the super admin). Even with groups, the original group creator is the owner of the group–at least until he or she adds another admin. Group mods do not own the group data, they just help to manage it. Now, if the original group admin leaves the group, the new admin becomes the sole owner.

    So user roles are irrelevant to the operation of BuddyPress as it focuses on users and not user roles. It is a social networking layer after all and not a content authoring and management layer like WordPress.

    If only people didn’t believe that Email protocols and services were such a simple thing, the post above by deadpan10 gets closer than most to understanding some of the potential issues and that it’s NOT necessarily a WP/BP one.

    Correctly set up email with correct and proper dns records might go some way to resolving issues many have, interestingly it’s pointed out that even given a correct SPF record Hotmail still appears to have issues, I have no answer to whether it’s the activation link but it’s an interesting notion.

    I have had the same text “WordPress 3.0.1 is available! Please update now.” appearing on the admin page. Should be a bug, but don’t be affraid of it, your site is updated. View the version number of WP at the bottom right of your admin interface.

    I have the same problem
    but in my case the bb-config.php is in the same directory as wp-config but I still get the error message. also the bbpress forum does actually work, but it is just that buddypress cannot see it and does not work from within buddypress. My wordpress installation is in a folder not the root of the html docs

    When you go to the section about installing bbpress it always files, to do with the location of bb-configure.php

    I am stuck at the moment

    @AnindyaRay: Hmmm you got a link for your site? My thoughts are maybe a javascript error (try in firebug to see that) or something like error in files (did you copy over the adminbar.css and also both javascript files (ajax.php / js)? I certainly don’t get any issues with the default or my themes that don’t use custom admin bars – perhaps the custom admin bar code. Worst case maybe you could remove that feature (hate to suggest that but if it’s causing issues).

    @pcwriter: General rule is last supported version is latest with BuddyPress / WordPress or at least that’s the way I work with themes myself. Can’t really speak for others. I myself choose that route as there are generally security and other reasons for upgrades.

    @Roger: I get the frustration but to be truthful I’m a theme designer and I don’t have these issues as said before I go with latest version support and I think you will find most do. This is of course a point of debate and maybe not the place for this said debate as a personal choice / company choice depending on your working situation. This happens with every release it gets better and more gets added… WordPress has same problem if you think of what happened around 3.0 for instance.

    I do think it’s perhaps a point of note to those of us in themes to get more involved and this is one point I myself have in the past few months realised. We can complain about things and claim them wrong but until we get involved can we be surprised over something getting changed. It’s a project we all can get involved in and perhaps this all should be a call to action rather than a soap box moment which I know myself I’m feeling. BuddyPress themes will I think truly benefit from those of us that work with them getting involved where we can. Please take this in the good nature it’s meant as I’ve also had this realisation.

    You may find the widget version of default by modemlooper https://wordpress.org/extend/themes/buddypress-widget-theme gets you on the right track otherwise you can fairly easily add widget areas to your theme or use something like the 3 column or other default themes. Have you checked out a few of the default variations right here: https://buddypress.org/extend/themes/ ?

    I’m sorry, I finally found https://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php#Configure_Error_Log
    but even that didn’t help. I don’t understand why my website is being so stubborn. BuddyPress worked flawlessly on my test server. I mean, I would have expected a little error here and there with maybe some quick fixes. I’ve been at this for weeks and it’s starting to get ridiculous. I might have to change hosts or find a different social community setup. I’d really hate to not use BP though, it’s so amazing and the best free one I’ve ever seen. :(

    EDIT
    Problem solved. All I had to do was set the WP_DEBUG to true in the WP_Config file and the errors showed up.

    I changed the syntax for the one BP uses and the plugin is working so far.
    For example, instead of using the standar conditional tags !is_page(‘register’) try !bp_is_register_page() in order to prevent a widget to show up in the sidebar when a user gets to “yourdomain.com/register”
    A full list of functions to determine the current page can be found at https://wordpress.org/support/topic/buddypress-and-widget-logic (thanks to alanft)
    I hope this may help

    Consider using a plugin like Invite Anyone wordpress.org/extend/plugins/invite-anyone to get around this restriction.

    Dear Mark!

    I have just installed BuddyPress 1.2.6 along with WordPress 3.0.1, installed translations for both and put `define (‘WPLANG’, ‘pl_PL’);` inside wp-config.php. Everything seems to work fine, even if only the BuddyPress translation is in place.

    If I’m not mistaken, I believe you’ve been inspired by http://www.workathomemommies.com/ :-)

    If you want to learn how to widgetize a page so you can put whatever you want on it, here’s a great tutorial:
    http://wpmu.org/how-to-widgetize-a-page-post-header-or-any-other-template-in-wordpress/

    If you just want to style the appearance of blog posts on your frontpage, you can do that through CSS.
    There are any number of great resources and tutorials in the vast wilderness of cyberspace to help you learn what you need to know. To help you identify exactly what you need to change in your theme’s CSS to get the effect you want, I highly recommend installing the Firebug for Firefox addon:
    http://getfirebug.com/

    Hope this helps! :-)

    I agree – of course ensuring that the main keyword is prominent in url, title & description is a good thing; that’s one of the ways SEs determine the relevance of content… and up goes the pagerank :-) (Otto does come off as being a “bit” opinionated on that point, doesn’t he?)

    But he does illustrate a valid point about performance and WordPress’ rewrite rules. Here’s an interesting discussion on trac about URL routing, and how to improve same (over my head, but interesting nonetheless):

    Try changing your permalinks to /%category%/%postname%/

    Can you do that, or do you get an error message?

    If successful, do BuddyPress links now work
    If not, you need to configure your server correctly for WordPress before using BuddyPress

    Hi Paul, as far as permalinks are concerned, mine are configured to “/index.php/2010/10/24/sample-post/”

    As far as I know, my server is running IIS and the wordpress and buddypress versions are 3.0.1 and 1.2.6 respectively

    Thanks for the help!

    Why would you change permalink structure?

    Never start the custom permalink string with any of these %postname%, %category%, %tag%, or %author% because the performance reasons.

    Otto said…

    Firstly, it’s really not any better for SEO to have the category in there, or to have just the postname there by itself. And anybody who tells you differently is wrong. If you disagree with me, then no, I’m not interested in arguing this point with you; you’re just wrong, period, end of discussion.

    Glad you resolved it on your own. Btw, forgot to add, you should also install BP Template Pack to get BP components working in your WP theme – https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-template-pack/

    Can’t find tags. The only thing find is a tag template, and this is what it shows, if it’s right, I still don’t know where to place buddypress:

    <?php
    /**
    * The template for displaying Tag Archive pages.
    *
    * @package WordPress
    * @subpackage Twenty_Ten
    * @since Twenty Ten 1.0
    */

    get_header(); ?>

    <?php
    printf( __( ‘Tag Archives: %s’, ‘twentyten’ ), ‘‘ . single_tag_title( ”, false ) . ‘‘ );
    ?>

    <?php
    /* Run the loop for the tag archive to output the posts
    * If you want to overload this in a child theme then include a file
    * called loop-tag.php and that will be used instead.
    */
    get_template_part( ‘loop’, ‘tag’ );
    ?>
