    Hey, I’ve kind of gotten resigned to this current design, despite the usability problems, not going away anytime soon, no matter how much I wish it would. I’ve used Stylish and Greasemonkey to try and hammer it into something legible and less annoying (for me at least), and come, if not to like it, at least to endure it. I think it’s driving new users away from Buddypress, to be honest, because it’s so painful to use. I’d love if the site were a real showpiece of what can be done with BP (while keeping the BP-testbed kept vanilla), not just out of the box, but with all kinds of sweet customization to make it sing. Or even just something like pagination at the bottom of pages. Or favoriting of threads. Or…. sigh. I’m not going to write another laundry list. If I had the site tools, I might be able to find the ones I wrote a year ago. ;-) OK, done with the passive-aggressive complaining. Sorry.

    What I’d really like to request, given the .org design status quo (or even if it changes in future), is a subforum for folks with questions that are a little more advanced, where those of us who know how to dig into the guts of WordPress, who are reasonably comfortable with BP already, with PHP and CSS and all that good stuff, can ask about and help others with the Harder Stuff.

    I have no problem with there being a massive number of HOW DO I MAEK WEB!!!?! questions from less experienced people filling up the front page of the forum — those folks need help too, more, arguably, than the rest of us.

    But it would sure be nice to have a subforum for Advanced Topics, don’t you think?

    Buddypress doesn’t connect to the database, WordPress does.
    BP is a plugin and will use the same db as WP, but if WP can’t connect, BP won’t work either.

    @i_banks

    In your wp-config.php file (root of your site), you’ll see the following lines:

    `// ** MySQL settings – You can get this info from your web host ** //
    /** The name of the database for WordPress */
    define(‘DB_NAME’, ‘your-db-name-here’);

    /** MySQL database username */
    define(‘DB_USER’, ‘your-db-username-here’);

    /** MySQL database password */
    define(‘DB_PASSWORD’, ‘your-db-password-here’);`

    Insert your connection info in the appropriate places, save and reupload.

    global $blog_id;
    echo $blog_id;

    Or
    In WordPress 3.1, your $blog_id can be found by navigating to the “Network Admin > Sites” page and hovering over the blog in question. You should see a link that resembles this:

    http://example.com/wp-admin/network/site-info.php?id=1

    Your $blog_id, in this instance, would be 1.

    For WordPress 3.0, the $blog_id can be found in the “ID” column of the “Super Admin > Blogs” page.

    Hello. See *Info Before Activation* at the bottom of readme.txt included in plugin folder which is not seen in WP repo pages https://plugins.svn.wordpress.org/bp-group-frontpage/trunk/readme.txt
    I personally haven’t used the plugin since it requires BP Album plugin.

    It wasn’t automatically listed in BuddyPress.org plugin directory because plugin dev forgot to “tag” it BuddyPress in plugin file

    Shalom y’all

    Last night I ran across something called the BP Group Frontpage plugin on the WP site.

    It isn’t listed here in the plugin’s section and on the WP site no author is listed.

    FOund it kind of odd.

    Here is the link http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-group-frontpage/

    at any rate I’m crurious but not enough to to install without knowing a bit more about it.

    Can anyone shed a little light?

    Hello everyone,

    1. I setup WordPress (3.1) and created a network successfully.
    2. I setup two sites (the main site and a testing site) using sub directories.
    3. For each site I set permalinks to Day and Name.
    4. I installed BuddyPress by using the “Add New” plugin feature.
    5. Did a “Network Activate” on the BuddyPress plugin.
    6. Set the main site and the testing site to use the BuddyPress theme (1.2.7)

    For the main site BuddyPress works fine but when I try to access some BuddyPress related pages for my test sites, ex:

    domain/testing/activity
    domain/testing/members

    etc etc, I get a “Page Not Found – The page you were looking for was not found.”

    Anyone have some ideas on what could be the problem? I tried switching permalinks but did not help.

    Also, I noticed on a default WordPress installation (not WPMU) that when BuddyPress is installed there will be an option, “Appearance -> BP Compatibility”. In WPMU I do not see that option.

    Any help is appreciated, if you know of a good guide on getting BuddyPress and WPMU working then please let me know. I could not find one that worked for me after two hours.

    Take a look here https://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks where the difference between the types of permalink are explained. You have the /index.php/ in your permalink settings.This is probably because your hosting provider needs them for your normal WordPress to work, I notice you have reverted to the default which wont work for Buddypress anyway.

    Ask your hosting provider for a rewrite.script file so that you can have ‘pretty permalinks’

    i need your help

    it has been around a week and my web is down cause i have cancelled my ning subscription because i moved to wordpress

    Before i did that i tried wordpress using your import to ning plug and it worked and deleted it cause it was just a trial

    now when i already cancelled ning and trying to get everything ready in wordpress when i reach the step of importing i get the below error

    ”Here’s what it actually says…

    ”In order to run the importer, you must first use your FTP program to upload the contents of your Ning export into a directory called ning-files in your wp-content directory. The plugin couldn’t find a members file at /wp-content/ning-files/ning-members-local.json, which probably means that you haven’t uploaded the files to the right place. Upload your unzipped export to the json directory, and try visiting this page again.”

    Plsssssssssssssssssssssssssss help me out i searched everywhere in the net i could only find the below two links

    http://teleogistic.net/code/wordpresswordpress-mu/import-from-ning/

    http://buddypress.org/community/members/kswaters/activity/127364

    non of them helped me

    i have been awake since last night until now it is already around 11am

    hope i get a respond from you as soon as you can

    thanks

    Never mind I found it. It was under syndication. There was no big obvious setting as far as I could find. In syndication you had to go under each individual feed and set them to be assigned to admin.

    Not sure, but I believe this has something to do with Multisite.

    I don’t believe you can use “wp-login.php?action=register” in Multisite, only “wp-signup.php”.

    You might want to create your own signup page. Read the “Worth Mentioning” section here:
    http://www.wptavern.com/what-to-do-or-consider-after-you-enable-multisite-in-wordpress#comments (scroll up a bit)

    It’s been awhile since I’ve tried out FeedWordPress, but I believe there’s a setting for you to map blog posts to already-created users. You should try that setting out.

    I wouldn’t use the “create new users” options in FWP, since any WP user will have a profile in BuddyPress.

    There seem to be a few people having problems with existing forum installations no longer working. I’ve followed these, but they don’t seem to be arriving at a solution. I have two separate installations of buddypress that have been updated, but in both the forum link is broken. And when I try to set up a new group with a discussion forum, the link …/admin/group-settings is broken too. Other links work fine.
    Using:
    – WordPress 3.1
    – Buddypress 1.2.8
    Have tried
    – Reinstalling forums
    – Deactivating plugins
    – Activating standard buddypress theme

    Has anyone found a solution to this yet?

    Thanks
    Kevin

    [EDIT]
    “blocked” and “inactive” roles appear to come from bbPress as this is not native to WordPress. My suggestion would be to *not* use these roles at all for the moment.

    If you’re using multisite, just use WordPress’ native Network Admin user administration panel and set users as spammers:
    https://codex.wordpress.org/Network_Admin_Users_Screen

    Do not use the regular WP admin users screen for this!
    https://codex.wordpress.org/Users_Users_SubPanel

    == I thought all of that was supposed to be under /wordpress/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/members ==

    That would be the folder where template files of bp-default theme is located.
    If you installed WordPress in /wordpress folder and activated BP in main site then yes, the default url for members directory would look like …/wordpress/members

    to install in my hosting wordpress.org BuddyPress, required wordpress.com account? or only in case install in wordpress.com, can I install there?

    Hey guys, I hope you can help me.

    I have been setting up my buddypress install for a few weeks now (tinkering with many plugins and trying to get it just right before it goes public) and I’ve run into a couple of issues which I have been unable to resolve.

    I would like some parts of my site which are restricted to be viewable to non-members (or members who are not logged in) and some parts which are accessible to be restricted. My WordPress/BuddyPress settings are all set for public viewing/registering.

    Perfect: My Homepage is set to Activity Stream with selected activity types hidden from non-members and this is working well.
    Would like restricted: My Members page allows non-member to view my members list which I would like to change so If the user is not logged in they will be redirected to the register page.
    Would like partially unrestricted: My Groups page restricts non-member and redirects them to the register page but I would like non-members to have access to my Groups List but not individual groups.
    Would like unrestricted: My Forums page restricts non-member access but I would like all my public group forums to be accessible by all users.

    I am using plugins: BuddyPress Links, Jet Event System and Achievements which all add a nav button to BuddyPress header bar but all these pages have restricted access too. I would like all these pages to be viewable by everyone.

    Standard public blog pages created in wp-admin are accessible to non-members and I wondered if it is something I have done to my install while playing with plugins. I’ve been searching for a way to fix this for ages now on google and even in bp code (mostly theme which is bp default by the way) but can’t find anything. Pages redirect to **mysite.com**/register/?private=true which shows a red message bar at the top which says: This is a private network. You must register first before fully interacting with the rest of the community.

    Please help – I hope I’ve provided enough info (didn’t want to post a proper link to my site as I don’t want it public until it’s ready.

    Oh and thanks to all wp/bp/plugin devs you are awesome!

    I’m working on building a social network for a fairly large community that I was shocked to notice did not have one. I installed feedwordpress to have an automated source of news. The names of the authors are being created into member profiles. Is there a way around this? Some of the authors are huge names in my segment and I don’t really want to be using there names as members if they did not join themselves. A) because it looks fake and B) I would not want to alienate them.

    Does anyone know a way around this?

    Right now the navigation of my BuddyPress site goes:

    Home | Members | Groups | News | About

    where “Home” has the activity stream, “News” has blog posts, and “About” is a regular static page. I would like to change the navigation so that the Home page contains what is currently on the “Groups” page and have a new, separate tab called “Activity” for the activity stream, which would replace the current Groups tab. I.e.:

    Home (Groups) | Members | Activity | News | About

    or possibly:

    Home (Groups) | News | Members | Activity | About

    I tried trying to pinpoint how to change this by looking at the page source and with Firebug, but couldn’t figure it out. I also tried using the tutorial here: http://erikshosting.com/wordpress-tips-code/reorder-buddypress-tabs/ , but didn’t have any luck.
