I have one buddypress/wordpress installation (multi user) in a share hosting account! how can add another new site with a fresh install of wordpress/buddypress on the same hosting account? Can i add it as an add on domain? or do i have to get a new hosting account!

    thanks

[blockquote]Jeff, yes, I like MAMP, but also wanted to avoid creating lots of copies of Apache and php et al – and I want to run on port 80 anyway…[/blockquote]

I have a single Apache/PHP install (the default MAMP version) and simply use Apache’s virtual host directive to host 9 different WordPress development sites locally. They all have their own test domain (they do not use “localhost”), and they use the default Apache port (80) and MySQL port (3306). It’s simple to set up and manage. This is done with MAMP not MAMP Pro. If you don’t know how to do this, then MAMP Pro will do it for you.

Ok here is the issue. After searching the Buddypress forums, I have found that I am not the only one having an issue with Spam on my activity streams. I have 4 different anti-spam plug-ins however, they all seem to deal specifically with comments on the blog! They are working quite well, however they don’t do anything for spam on the stream.

Can someone direct me on how to, or where to find, a way of catching spam on the stream? For me this is a big issue, although I have unlimited hosting, I am on a paid host. (Webhostingpad) One of the big things for them is resources, and spammers are eating up valuable resources from the server that REAL people could and should be using. My site has been shut down twice now because of MYSQL activity from spammers posting on my Activity Streams.

I like Buddypress and WordPress, but I cannot have my site shut down because of this issue!

Theming BuddyPress is like theming any other WordPress theme.
You’ll just need to add all the BuddyPress-related template files to your theme for it to be BuddyPress-compatible.

There’s a plugin out there that automates this, BP Template Pack: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-template-pack/
However, use it as a guide as it needs to be updated.

There’s also another guide by @thekmen, which can be found here:

    I’m currently working on a theme package with widgetized front page;
    https://buddypress.org/community/groups/creating-extending/forum/topic/new-theme-sneak-preview/

Here’s a good tutorial on how to widgetize any page:

    Hope this helps! :-)

This seems to be a more upstream WordPress.org issue—check out https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/

Not sure if there is conflict in code or something that cause similar problem. Maybe not related.

comment not showing up activity stream but that for wordpress and not wordpress multisite

I gave up a long time ago rolling my own WordPress and BuddyPress installs directly on OS X. It was too much of a pain for very little benefit. I switched to using MAMP (the free version) and both install easily without issue.

Good point if your logs aren’t being rotated you’ll end up running out of disk space completely, I forgot about rotating a log tried to open it in my editor to scan through, it editor wasn’t happy at all.

Don’t be surprised if your log file is what’s taken up your space. Look through the folders and tell us what files are taking up the space and maybe we can help you more.

I’m installing on my computer (MacBook Pro with MacOS 10.6). Did a fresh install of WordPress 3.01 into a subdirectory (san) of my web document root (/Library/WebServer/Documents). WordPress works fine (http://localhost/san gets me to it, etc). Can’t do an auto install of BuddyPress because my computer is not “on the web”. So I download the zip of BuddyPress 1.2.6, and move the unzipped BuddyPress folder to the wp-content/plugins directory. Then go to dashboard:plugins, and activate BuddyPress. Boom! Many many errors such as:

“Notice: Undefined offset: 0 in /Library/WebServer/Documents/san/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-core/bp-core-catchuri.php on line 85”

Okay, my 6 minutes are up. This is not so easy.

FYI, I went to a hosted site I admin and did an auto-install of BuddyPress – that worked just fine. So what’s the secret info I’m missing re my local install?

Or I guess, could I strip out the header and footer in the BuddyPress template and create a Page Template in my main WordPress site that pulls the BuddyPress template parts into it???

    Thanks guys!

So I’m new to this BuddyPress.

My straight forward question is: I have a fully functional site built using WordPress at http://www.saa.edu

If I want to incorporate this BuddyPress, will that change how my site works? I see it has it’s own head – doctype, meta, footer, etc… But let’s say I want to make a Page template in my Existing wordpress site, and pull in the layout of BuddyPress.

Should I install a second installation of wordpress and mirror my website design to look seamless or could I do it all within one existing installation just like any other normal pluggin?

When I activate it.. Obviously it loads all of this below the footer of my current site.

    Searching for understanding???

    Hi there,

    Thanks for viewing this topic.

So I have recently installed BuddyPress with WordPress.

The idea is to create a website that is a cross between CNN and Facebook.

To have users become both the journalists and the viewers.

However, at the moment I’m facing a lot, a lot of inconsistencies.

For example: Should I allow users to even get into the WordPress posting dashboard?

I’d like to make it so users can post on the forums with a good WYSIWYG editor – that they can add images, videos etc. like a normal forum. Then, other users can rate the posts up or down – so that the home page can show which posts have the most views, which posts are highest rated, and so on. However, this has been difficult to do…

So I’d like to ask whether there are plugins… or perhaps any assistance on how one can accomplish that?

I would greatly appreciate any help given here.

    Thanks.

    @hnla – :)

@clarki and @somethingforkaty – these are not BP issues but permalinks in WP. Go to your admin panel and set the permalinks. See step 3 here: https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/setting-up-a-new-installation/

Here is the information on “pretty” permalinks: https://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks

Watch the .htaccess after permalinks set in /wp-admin

I think the ‘afaik’ would need to be confirmed wouldn’t it? otherwise we are simply being asked to speculate based on little actual information.

What do you mean by ‘web folder space’ ?

Was this change apparent after an update to 1.2.6 or did it simply happen for no apparent reason.

Logs are always a good place to start looking for answers.

    Hey everyone,
I was just curious why my web folder space increased dramatically in size. I’m using WordPress 3.0.1 and Buddypress 1.2.6. The site hasn’t had an increase in traffic or uploads afaik. Any thoughts on why the jump in size occurred?

    Thanks,
    JP

You just need to create a new page with a custom page template and assign this new page as the front page:
    https://codex.wordpress.org/Creating_a_Static_Front_Page#Creating_a_Static_Front_Page

Once you’ve done this, “Activity” should automatically be added to the nav menu (I think!).

    In reply to: Buddypress roles

    Jeff Sayre
    Participant

With the limited exception of BP groups, BuddyPress offers only one role — that of user. The forums are controlled by bbPress code, integrated into BuddyPress, but it’s bbPress that is in control of offering additional roles. Even when bbPress is relaunched as a WordPress plugin, forum roles will still be controlled by bbPress.

BuddyPress is a social layer that sits on top of WordPress. As such, the notion of user and author are synonymous. What does all of this mean?

With the exception for BP groups mentioned above, BuddyPress is a user-centric platform where there are currently no-jointly owned or controlled subsets of data. Ignoring the overall Site Administrator, in BuddyPress, there is a one-to-one relationship between a given piece of datum and a single owner of that datum. The key is who owns data. That person is the one with ultimate control (ignoring the super admin). Even with groups, the original group creator is the owner of the group–at least until he or she adds another admin. Group mods do not own the group data, they just help to manage it. Now, if the original group admin leaves the group, the new admin becomes the sole owner.

So user roles are irrelevant to the operation of BuddyPress as it focuses on users and not user roles. It is a social networking layer after all and not a content authoring and management layer like WordPress.

    hi all,

I am trying to add to the main site of my BP installation four more roles, which would have the same capabilities as default BP subscriber (another crazy idea).
There are several plugins to achieve this, as I see, at the moment best one is (however it does not have default role for super admin):
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/capsman/

The issue is that I can not find list of roles capabilities for the default BP installation. I mean superadmin can do….., author…., subscriber… and so on.

Are roles in BP the same as WP?
If I have multisite activated, do I need to search for some WPMU roles?

    thank you!

If only people didn’t believe that Email protocols and services were such a simple thing, the post above by deadpan10 gets closer than most to understanding some of the potential issues and that it’s NOT necessarily a WP/BP one.

Correctly set up email with correct and proper dns records might go some way to resolving issues many have, interestingly it’s pointed out that even given a correct SPF record Hotmail still appears to have issues, I have no answer to whether it’s the activation link but it’s an interesting notion.
