KeymasterBuddyPress doesn’t use bb_users at all, only wp_users.
You have a standalone installation of bbPress which is where your users database is (because you mentioned bb_users, I expect)? Can we just clarify that you’ve installed WordPress, and activated BuddyPress?
Have you integrated your standalone bbPress install at all? If so, how? Via the “Use an existing bbPress installation” button in the BuddyPress Forums Setup page?

KeymasterThe default view for the member directory is “active members”. This will only show users who have logged in since you activated BuddyPress, and are therefore considered active (last_activity meta is present). If you change the ordering to something else, the members will show.
Technically this comes down to if a user’s “last_activity” record is present in wp_usermeta. I suppose you could pre-prime the last_activity record by something like this: http://buddypress.pastebin.com/USrLFAFH It’s not tested, but I think you could put it in your functions.php. Remember to remove it after one execution, however(!)

ParticipantSo, your main site is wp multisite and you’ve tried to activate bp on a secondary blog?
Amend: See the reply from @r-a-y to this thread: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/creating-extending/forum/topic/buddypress-not-on-themainblog/
Why haven’t you activated bp on the main site as that is your multisite primary blog?
Deactivate bp on your secondary site, install on your main site and let us know if your links then work

Which version of WP / BP?
Which theme are you using?Do your blog urls display correctly with the BuddyPress plugin deactivated?

MemberDidn’t mean where the actual files were located that is a given they have to be in the plugin folder. More what I was trying to establish is that you were not trying to do something out of the ordinary such as BP running on a sub blog of the main blog install.
– Oh no it is installed on the servers root. I have a linode server http://www.linode.com/ that wouldn’t have anything to do with it would it?
So you have an absolute basic default install of WP/BP? WP installed in main document root of the site and BP activated as a plugin of that primary WP install?
– correctWhen you try changing your permalink structure after saving do you get any messages returned along the lines of not being able to write to .htaccess , although I guess if it’s taking a manual ‘index.php’ it must be?
I did get this at first but i then changed my permissions on the .htcess and then reset the permalinks and didnt get an error.Can you tell me what the page is I’m looking at when I land on the site as it’s not a buddypress default layout or what looks like a child theme, I’m assuming that you haven’t activated BP or rather left BP activated.
– I had buddypress activated as a plug in on a site (which is a custom wordpress theme) when i visit it I am logged in as admin and a bar comes acrross the top of my screen Please seee http://blokmovaz.com/screenshot.png for a screen shotWhat version of WP 2.9 are you running is it MU to enable user blogs?
-Im just using 2.9 when i look in the dashboard it just says “You are using WordPress 2.9”
I’m not sure if its MU how do i tell?Have you created a BP theme for use with the site, obviously BP needs a BP enabled theme in order to function correctly.
– I have not yet… I havent been able to get it working in its default theme correctly on my server. I wanted to do that first.TBH I think that you need to try and patch up your differences with the developer you were working with or failing that find another that can get into the core site and establish what exactly is what. That you state you were just meant to be the designer suggests that this is not something you should be trying to sort out, generally a frontend developer would run a job the designer supply them with necessary graphics for layout along with layout impressions. What does the client say about the developer not having finished things or are you running this job and subbing out the development WP side of things.
-The clients are friends of mine so while not having this site up is disappointing its not as bad as if it were a client of mine…Having said that, we have dumped a lot of money into this site….this is our second developer who just kind of stopped communicating with us right near the end of the job (after first 2 milestones and payments were meant). I feel like I am more experienced then your average newbie at wordpress however i feel like speed is key here… and with me trying to finish this up its going very slow. My hands are kind of tied when it comes to our past developer…. he just refuses to take my calls, return my emails, or texts. Not even sure why.Thanks

ParticipantI had two users apparently never get the activation email. (One is me, so I know it didn’t go through, but the other attempt belongs to someone I don’t know. They MIGHT have simply never opened the email.) My first attempt used a hotmail (live.com) address. The other person’s is a personal domain.
I thought I was having a problem with ALL activation emails, but when I tried a new user registration with a gmail address, it worked. I suppose I should test new user creation with some more email addresses and providers.
In any case, if you don’t have tons & tons of new users, one thing you can do while “we” figure this out is to check the Users list under the WordPress settings (from wp-admin), as even unactivated users will show up there. Then visit any problem user in buddypress by manually typing in the address for their profile page (you know, something like http://www.example.com/members/USERNAME/). Then in the admin bar, you’ll find an option along the lines of “Admin Options->Mark user as not a spammer”. That’s probably not the exact text.

ParticipantSorry, I’m not being very clear. I’ll try again.
The problem with the plugin is that once you have logged in with facebook you can’t stop the facebook avatar coming through even if you login in normally afterwards. Once you are connected with facebook you are always connected to facebook. The plugin did not used to work like this. This means that users have to have to same avatar in fb and bp …forever! The only way around this (i have found) is to deactivate the plugin.
My question is, is it possible to stop the facebook avatar coming across in the first place. But still use the plugin and therefore users would upload avatars in BP.

ParticipantWhen you refer to a child theme it refers to the ability to create a new blank folder within the ‘theme’ folder this would be considered a ‘Child theme’ if it simply had a stylesheet residing in it’s root /top level that stated it was using the files from a particular parent theme, what then happens is having selected this theme – which now would appear in your dashboard themes page, – WP examines the stylesheet information at the top of the file and finds that it instructs WP to look for files in a particular theme as being the main theme files to use; however the clever trick is that WP first knows that it must look in your child theme for necessary files FIRST! and if they are not found THEN look for the necessary file in the stated parent theme, thus you do not have to have any files in your child theme as WP will use the parent files, but you can add new CSS rulesets to the stylesheet living in the child theme and these will be read and acted on (that stylesheet references the parent CSS stylesheet files through the @import rule first and then reads on for any additional rules you have added below the @import calls)
If you do not want to make any changes to BP-Default theme then you simply activate that theme as seen in the theme page in the dashboard. When members create a blog then those blogs should use the twentyten theme or whatever other themes you choose to download and make available (Note that you decide what themes are available to members via the ‘Super Admin >Themes’ page only the themes that you select ‘yes’ to are available to member blogs so to avoid them attempting to use the BP-Default on user blogs you ensure BP themes are not selected)
If you decide that you do need to make changes to BP-Default theme then you would create a folder under ‘Themes’ name it ? ‘my-bp-default’
to the folder you add the requisite stylesheet and now you can move files as required from bp-Default original folder to your new folder and edit them as you wish, or simply create new rulesets to style elements which you place in the new stylesheet file. BP/WP now looks at your new child theme for any files that it must use in preference to the same versions that might reside in the original theme folder.Apologies if the above covers ground you already understand.

ParticipantI am using WP 3.0.1 and BP 1.2.5.2
I am definitely sure that others can see my admin, and not just some parts of it. One fo the other users and I were trying to sort this out, and she coudl see exactly what I see. She actually accessed my admin where she could see the Super Admin links, and she accessed these through one of the other member’s admin area. I suspect the problem lies in that when users register, they end up not as independent users, but as users on the main site ie. mine. When I look at the “sites” area in my admin, i can see that there are many users whose site address is http://melbournemodernquiltguild.com, and then there are a few (ie. a minority) with site addresses as http://melbournemodernquiltguild.com/username. The only thing we’ve been able to establish as to how come this is, is that it seems that if users create a blog at the same time as when they first create their account, they end up with their own site address, ie. http://site/username. Otherwise, if they first create their account, then at a later time create a blog, they end up as a user on http://sitename.com. And I cannot figure out why that is.These are the plugins I have currently have activated:

KeymasterActually it is possible to bypass BP registration using the wp_insert_user() function.
It *should* be possible by overriding the /registration/register.php template file in your child theme. But all the good stuff like activating an account would be gone. However, you say you want to use WP’s registration system? Would require a BP core hack I believe.Changing the BP_ROOT_BLOG wouldn’t do a thing since BP is activated network-wide.

rich! @ etiviti
ParticipantJust some basic questions: multisite (which is important as a different process)? registration steps completed? data in mysql for a failed user signup? (check _users->”user_status” and _usermeta->meta_key->”activation_key”)
I was pointing out the php file and functions – if you wanted see the flow of the signup. (wp_insert_user, setting user_status, generating and saving activation_key, sending activation email to user). You mentioned “My install of wordpress does send emails successfully, until I activate Buddypress (then it breaks).” BuddyPress uses the same WordPress functions to send an email – so nothing changes in that regard but maybe some weird oddity in your setup causing a null email address or some other unpredictable result.

// This is a base array of pages that will be EXCLUDED from being blocked

KeymasterYou don’t need the BP Template Pack if you’re doing this.
What you’ll need to do is:
1) Deactivate the BP Template Pack plugin.
2) Activate the BuddyPress Default theme on your blog.
3) Setup WP 3.0 in network mode as a subdirectory install.
4) Create a new user blog and activate whatever theme you want on this new blog.July 14, 2010 at 4:26 pm #85611In reply to: Strange BP/WPMU Problem

KeymasterYour first issue is by design. The Site (Super if you’re on WP 3.0) Admin > Users option only appears when you activate Network mode (or are running WPMU). It shows everyone with an account on your installation. The Users > Users panel only shows accounts that have a user role on your blog (Subscriber, Contributor, etc). That list won’t show accounts that signed up through BP and thus don’t have any role on your main blog.
Not sure about the second issue. You have a screenshot?

If by “does not load the administrative side”, you mean you are getting a white page when trying to go to wp-admin, rename your wp-content/plugins/ folder to something else, then go to wp-admin. Then rename your plugins folder back; you’ll have to reactivate the plugins.

MemberI have actually done a fresh install of WP to enable the network and so far it seems to work. I have to test it out to see if every user gets their own blog. Not really sure how it all works with BP.
When I did the fresh install the forums worked. It must have been some sort of error on my part or a conflict as I had done a lot of messing about to get a nicer theme. This time I used a fresh install of WP, activated Network and then used BP default theme. I will have to spend some time learning BP themeing to get a nicer looking theme for my site. That will take some time I am sure.
Thanks for all your help!

ParticipantTake an activation URL in the activation email (send yourself a fake one if you don’t have one lieing around). Then, go into something like phpmyadmin. Look at the table for users (it’s different if you’re using WP vs. WPMU) and find the activation key. Replace the key in the URL and now you can use that URL to activate the account.
I’ve also heard rumor that someone might be working on a plugin to deal with this type of situation.

KeymasterIf you’re experiencing problems deleting users via the WP user management panel, then it’s probably not strictly speaking a BuddyPress problem. You might try deactivating BP (deactivate BP-dependent plugins first!) for a moment, to see if you’re able to delete members with BP turned off. If not, then your problem is WordPress related.

Participant@r-a-y I used your code suggestion and some that I found in Restrict User 2 With Viper’s original Restrict User Plugin
Found here http://www.viper007bond.com/wordpress-plugins/registered-users-only/
because I wanted the site to be restricted to registered users only… still allow access to the login/activiate page and ALSO allow access to the feeds…I ended up with this.
// Depending on conditions, run an authentication check
function MaybeRedirect() {
// If the user is logged in, then abort
if ( current_user_can(‘read’) ) return;$settings = get_option( ‘registered-users-only’ );
// Feeds
if ( 1 == $settings && is_feed() ) return;// This is a base array of pages that will be EXCLUDED from being blocked
if ($bp&&($bp->current_component == BP_REGISTER_SLUG ))//buddypress
return;if ( bp_is_register_page() || bp_is_activation_page() || is_page(‘welcome’) ) //buddypress

‘wp-register.php’,
‘wp-activate.php’,
