You might want to take a look at the JanRain plugin. It allows users to login with any social network account, fb, twitter, etc.. and has an auto create account feature. No password is required then.

Thanks Paul. I read the article briefly last week and will read it again.

    Meanwhile here are some findings:
    1) It seems apparently the hackers are using some auto-login scripts – cos after setting achievements for tracking/awarding 1 point per login, some accounts clocked in over 20K points in a single day (twenty thousand times of login in to the site?!)
    2) Another research method which was accidental – i setup Feedjit to see traffic and potential users coming in. Apparently the hacker use this search phrase – “powered by WordPress and Buddypress” so they must have and actively seeking sites powered by Buddypress knowing they can come in to create spam easily.

Anyway the above observations is for those who are working on their sites as reference.

Although naturally it’s Mercims decision to help in any way she would like, please bear in mind that this is a volunteer help and support forum, and asking for people to do work for free is sometimes asking a bit too much :)

@gospelcast Curious why groups link is going to the webhost’s error page. Deactivate all plugins except BuddyPress. Also.check dashboard menu BuddyPress > Pages if your Groups is associated with a Page selected then click save.

    Thanks Hugo for your reply,

its not that i can’t create groups or topics.. its that those topics are not showing up in the “forums directory”.

May i ask you to try the following steps on your test install? :

    – create a private group
    – go to that new group
    – go to “forum” in that group
    – create a new topic
    – go to “forum directory” in that group or just hit “forums” on the top navigation bar
    – check if you see the newly created topic there

    – be sure that you are not using an administrator account
    – doing the same with a public group -> no problem

== i can’t seem to get the “groups” page and profiles running. ==

@gospelcast looks like you’ve fixed your profiles issue http://gospelcast.org/members/patricksan/profile/

    As for the groups page,
    – check if groups directory and files were uploaded within wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/
    – also go to dashboard menu BuddyPress > Components and double-check if you have not disabled groups component. Re-Save page if you have activated groups component.
    – go to BuddyPress > Pages and double-check if you have a Page assigned to your Groups. Re-Save Pages if you have selected Page for Groups.
    – go to Settings > Permalinks and Re-Save permalink structure.
    – for extra measure, re-upload BuddyPress plugin into plugins folder

== since we have a membership functionality set in place. Unfortunately, only the admin is able to create a new site and no one else ==

@marisaj85 If you set WP Multisite installation in Network Admin > Settings – Allow New Registrations – with “Both sites and user accounts may be registered”, then your members will be able to create new blogs. It might just be your “membership functionality” which is interfering with the new blog/subsite creation. Contact the developer who made that “membership functionality” to resolve this issue.

hi guys.. just installed buddypress to this new site am building, http://gospelcast.org but i can’t seem to get the “groups” page and profiles running. when i click on the nav menu tab, it gives an error message. when i look through profiles, there seems to be no way one can create groups. what must i do then? on the right sidebar, the “create a new account” link doesnt work, it only gives error message. same is true when one uses the sign in link near the header. i also wonder how a user starts making/posting blogs after making an account. I already set new users to be “authors”, but when i look from the profiles, there is no button or link there that i can find where one clicks to start making/posting a blog. please help me on these concerns. thanks. try visiting my new site (empty) to see how these concerns appear.

Check under Settings/General and make sure that you have your Registration Settings set to allow anyone to register (checkbox). If this isn’t checked, then no one can create an account or sign up.

Humm, here it goes again : Following a connexion of a new user, my account appears now 14 times.
At the same time, I activated plugins : DB Cache Reloaded Fix and Hyper Cache – Not sure this is linked, but just in case. I do have Mailpress installed too, if this can help too.

For information, last time I had this, and before having a complete reinstall, I did deactivate all plug-ins and activate standard theme and the 7 identical users didn’t move away.

It look like when someone register (first connexion), it create multiples records inside the database. I am not sure, how to identify this issue (I don’t handle dababase very well)

    Any ideas ?

== my sister has had to re do a passwords more then 10 times, every time she updates it here she has to re do it again at word press ==
Nope. You only need to create an account at WP.org and you can use the same username and password here and at bbPress, among others.

== we are going to kickapps were we know support is live ==
Know that we are all volunteers living in different time zones. You have the freedom to choose whatever platform meets your needs even if you have to pay for it.

Thank you for your feedback. Good luck.

There is a confusing amount of stuff about ie quirks mode on the internet.

It could be that a previous page put that ie tab into quirks mode.

On this page for instance, on a pc without this issue, if you click f12 in internet explorer ( Developer Tools is built into ie version 8 & 9 ) and from the developer tools dropdown bar’s Document Mode select quirks mode then put http://islandstitcheryguild.org/ in the address bar it will also be in quirks mode…

If this is actually the problem, then on the computers where this happens what is the consequence of manually switching to Document Mode ie9 standards – does it ‘stick’?

    #131746

the issue has not been resolved. Oddly enough, on two of our home computers is shows up with a vertical menu, but on our laptop it shows fine. On my shop’s computer it shows fine (all in IE, of course – there are no problems in FF or Chrome). One home computer is running IE8, the other IE9, so it’s not version-specific. I have the latest releases of both WP and BP – downloaded & installed from the respective websites. How does IE switch to Quirks mode? Perhaps this happened to the two computers concerned? Both our home computers have widescreens and use IE in full screen mode.
    Any help would be great!

@shawn38 @crystal-phoenix just to add that for very long blocks of code, use pastebin.com and paste generated URI here :-)

I checked your with IE simulator 6 to 9 online at http://netrenderer.com/index.php and I don’t see the vertical navigation. Know that bp-default theme has a responsive layout wherein the main navigation does go vertical when viewed at smaller widths which should be taken into consideration.

@crystal-phoenix I don’t see any problem with internet explorer 9 in ‘normal’ Browser / Document mode

But if I switch (using F12 Developer Tools) to ( Document Mode: ) Quirks then the menu ( Home Activity Groups Members ) is aligned vertically…. on the left etc. ( I haven’t seen your screenshot )

Maybe something is making those ie9 browsers switch to quirks mode – but it didn’t happen to me automatically….

Although I can’t see what on your page would have caused it…

@mercime Ok, thank you for letting me know, that is very helpful. Hey maybe you can help Crystal. I have seen the screen shot and the navigation is displaying vertically instead of horizontally. I am thinking its something in the `#navigation` CSS. I have checked it over with the above mentioned browsers but I do not have IE 9 so I can not replicate this behavior.

    >> You also can’t post complete code. It won’t allow PHP tags.
@shawn38 you can post code here. Just surround your code with (`) backticks, the symbol between the parentheses

Has the issue been resolved? If not let me know what version of WP & BP your using along with any plugins! Also, are you using a child theme?

    #131707

    Done, Shawn, thanks…
