You can’t install bbpress in the “forums” folder if you enable buddypress group forums, since buddypress will then use “forums” as its permalink for its build in group forums.

Maybe install the standard bbpress in a “forum” folder?

WPMU 2.9 trunk, BP 12 trunk, internal bbPress intstall

    .

    1. In Forum – Group Forum Topic – Edit Topic

I can edit Topic Title, Content but nowhere to add/delete Tags of any topic. Just noticed it now that Tag edit was not available when I needed to add some tags to a forum post. Checking BP 1.1 beta folder, I now see I lost that functionality way back when i moved from external bbPress to internal forum in 1.1 beta

    – Will form for editing tags be brought into Edit Topic Page in stable 1.2?

In the meantime, I have copied the edit.php from bp-default/groups/single/forum/ to my child theme and added the template tag to edit tags.

    2. Groups Directory page shows “There were no groups found.” when there are groups in this install.

    – Possibly because bp-default theme is still in construction?

Groups Directory page in child theme of bp-sn-parent is showing up the Groups listed in that page.

    Thank you.

    @ All,

Please do not forget, in every developing community, where the developers try to find a way to stay confirm to the Open Source philosophy and also make some profit, it always comes to this point.

The idea of donating does not work. I developed free software by my self .

Some plugins were downloaded thousand of times, but Paypal Donation was always less.

Not more than going out for some beer!

Look what happens to bbpress where ck stopped at least after she got tired of doing things for nothing.

What I want to say is, let’s be careful not to spoil people, who are thinking a lot about our all problems.

Of cause for most of us our busyness is build on Open Source Software.

So we all need the freedom of GPL.

In my opinion premium memberships are a great idea of having the source still GPL. People need to earn money.

I like it much more as the idea of free software with ads. Then you need to pay for ads free one…

I immediately would pay premium memberships for bp-events and other software around buddypress. This will offer stable software, you have a quick support forum and you will find some other stuff like an extra bonus in the premium area.

I’m looking for a free future without ripping of peoples engagement.

… forums and groups seem commingled in a way that is pretty darned counterintuitive

My solution is to just ignore/remove forums and focus on communication between members via (micro)blogging and threaded comments.

It’s cool to have the option of BBpress integration if you want it, but I don’t understand why it is becoming a default core component of BP. I hope BP steps back from that brink…

@gerikg, did u get the fb avatar to show up in bbpress?

I used the deep integration + extremely crude FB connect integration from newbie’s tutorial that suits me at http://wiki.developers.facebook.com/index.php/Facebook_Connect_Tutorial1

I then added a filter for bp_core_get_avatar to call the fbconnect_replace_avatar function which was already in the buddypress-fbconnect plugin; of course i put this code as a plugin under my-plugin. Since all my bb profile edit / login re rerouted to bp, i dont really worry abt the extra fbconnect login stuffs. So far, the fb avatar works ok in bbpress in addition to normal user avatar set in bp. If someone could put this as a plugin for bb, would be great.

20,000-foot thought here, but possibly germane.

I’ve been thinking as I’ve gotten from ankles- to knees- to nipples-deep in Buddypress is that there may be a little fuzziness conceptually (or perhaps it’s just my own lack of understanding and need to hammer things down, mentally) around some stuff at the highest level as BP has evolved.

What I mean is something like this: forums and groups seem commingled in a way that is pretty darned counterintuitive, I think, for most users accustomed to traditional forums structure or to social networky ways of doing things. This is not entirely to the bad — I’m not suggesting that — but I think it confuses people who are not ‘techy’. This initial confuzzlement means a lot of people give up without trying to figure out the Buddypress Way, which is a Bad Thing. For my part, as someone who’s highly technical and been working on and off in designing user experience stuff for decades, even me, if a site doesn’t present its ‘expected’ interaction mode after a few seconds, I’ll probably give up and go elsewhere. Little things like a lack of an easily found search box will have me closing a site tab, my patience level is so low — I think that ordinary users tend to be a little lost in the groups/forums melange of Buddypress, sensible as it may seem to those of us who are building the sites, and just give up and go back their Facespaces and Mybooks.

Part of the issue I’m describing badly probably comes from the bolt-on and eventually plugged-in nature of BBpress as part of Buddypress, but I also think it might have been a bit of a result of not starting from top down, boring old use-casey thinking. I could be wrong there, of course, it could just be me, and no offense to Andy or anyone else meant by saying it. It just seems a little… wrong to me, a bit, thinking as a user.

So, finally, about this latest idea and thread: there seems to me, as part of the shift in 1.3, to be a changing conceptual focus. That is, we are directing the focus of users from other individuals, other users on the site (as ‘objects’), to the activity of those individuals, as the engine of interaction, if you will. ‘Following’ activity and so on. Now there’s nothing wrong with that, and I actually feel it’s a very good idea, because engaging users and keeping them actively using a site and interacting with others is what it’s all about, and Facebook, like it or love it, understands that perfectly.

But there are downstream consequences of activity (actions) being the focus of site use as opposed to, for lack of a better word, objects (people, groups).

I’d just like to hold up a hand and say that considering what those consequences might be is a wise thing, I think, if only to avoid a kind of frankenstein’s monster situation, with different conceptual drivers for user engagement ruling over different parts of the app, and further stirring up cognitive dissonance in already-possibly-bewildered users.

OK, that’s enough words now. ;-)

    I have the same problem…

I have deleted all groups and started a new group but no luck.

The thread appears in the sitewide activity, the tags get created.

I just get the error and the thread doesnt show up in my /forums page.

Any idea how to fix that?

@Vincole: Check out BBPress, this site uses it also and it can be integrated into your BuddyPress site (takes some work though)

If it’s an old group, you must first disable then re-enable the group forum in the group admin menu.

Have you created a Group in your install? Forum topics are associated with Groups. If the issue is other than that, it would help if you shared what WPMU and BP versions you are using.

You cannot use the admin panel of bbPress if you use the one/two click BuddyPress installation. If you want a bbPress admin panel and want to install bbPress plugins, you need to install bbPress externally, then use the WordPress integration plugin, then you go to BuddyPress Forum component and click on “I want to use exisiting bbPress forum”

This topic seems to go a bit offtopic, so there’s no way to use the administration panel of bbPress?

If for example I wanted to activate plugins bbpress how can I do?

    Thanks Jeff — good question!

    1. Which version of WPMU are you running?

    WordPress MU 2.8.6.

    2. Did you install WPMU as a directory or subdomain install?

    Directory

    3. If a directory install, is it in root or in a subdirectory?

    Subdirectory

    4. Did you upgraded from a previous version of WPMU? If so, from which version?

    Nope.

    5. Was WPMU functioning properly before installing/upgrading BuddyPress?

Yea, mostly (except that I had to install plugin to dealt with “www” subdomain issue [see above / top] )

    6. Which version of BuddyPress (BP) are you running?

    Latest (1.1.3)

    7. Did you upgraded from a previous version of BP? If so, from which version?

    Nope.

    8. Do you have any plugins other than BuddyPress installed and activated?

Yea, “GD Star-Rating” + “Visitor Maps and Who’s Online” (I guess I could do without this one if Buddypress would work ;) )

    9. Are you using the standard BuddyPress themes or customized themes?

    Standard

    10. Have you modified the core files in any way?

    Nope.

    11. Do you have any custom functions in bp-custom.php?

    Nada.

    12. If running bbPress, which version? Or did your BuddyPress install come with a copy of bbPress built-in?

I clicked to istall forums, but haven’t touched that since (absolute beginner with that)

    13. Please provide a list of any errors in your server’s log files.

None (at least not that I can see)

    14. Which company provides your hosting?

“Freenet.DE” (I think somehow affiliated with either GMX or Strato :/ )

Bonus: trying to set it up here >> http://saarpfalz.org/x/

I just ran the installer right from Buddypress to install bbpress. Anyway to fix this or point me to where 1.2 could be downloaded from?

I don’t think site wide activity would work if you’re using a fresh, external install of bbPress.

That would need to be coded probably as a bbPress plugin. I highly recommend deep integration between WPMU and bbPress so you can gain access to WP’s function within bbPress. Otherwise, you need to do specific calls to the database.

If you’re going with the latter approach, for hints, look into how Boone Gorges coded the MediaWiki plugin, which also writes to the sitewide activity stream.

Cookies seem to be working fine, when I am logged in to one or the other I am logged in to the other.

The only thing that seems not to work the the forum posts going to the “Site Wide Activity Stream” or “My Latest Activity”

Someone managed to get it to work here so I would think that t can be done.

It’s not as simple as that. One thing you will need to tackle is getting bbPress and BuddyPress sharing the same cookies for user authentication. You need to select the ‘use existing install’ option on the BuddyPress admin to configure BuddyPress; if you have previously selected the new install option, I don’t know what the impact will be if you then tell it to use an existing install.

What you need to do is find a tutorial or guide for how to install BuddyPress forums (previous to version 1.1, you had to do it manually and it was very complicated). You could start by reading backwards on https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/forum-install-some-helping-hints-2

I am still wondering how to have the bbpress installed in /forums/ (not part of buddypress), and have the new posts in bbpress show up in the “Site Wide Activity”. (Just like here)

Reason being I want all the forums accessible to everyone and not have to deal with group forums and all of that.

    Thoughts?

I put something together along these lines today. I used the version of TinyMCE that ships with WP. Have a look, and please feel free to build on it or tell me what I’m doing wrong :-D : http://teleogistic.net/2009/12/tinymce-in-buddypress/
