It’s a usability thing. Let me take an example:

Site for networking of dentists in the UK.
What I have in mind is at top level 4 groups:
– England
– Wales
– Scotland
– Ireland

Then within each group, there are subgroups for counties.

Within each county subgroup, there are sub-subgroups for town/city etc.

Within the county sub-subgroup for town/city for particularly large cities, there could be sub-sub-subgroups for boroughs.

If Paul joins the group for Exeter, he should automatically become a member of Devon and England respectively.

I’m sure there are other ways of doing this; I just don’t see anything so instinctive or natural.

There can be multiple other examples.
For a medical professionals organization:
Doctor > Neurology > Clinical neurophysiology
For a university:
Business School > MBA > Managerial Accounting
etc

I don’t suppose a ton of people currently use hierarchical groups in BuddyPress. But I am certain that features like this will go a long way in opening up new markets for the script, way beyond just small techie groups.

@mercime Thanks for your reply. I am hosted on Finerhosting and am using their VPS and I am allowed to changed limits. This is something I have confirmed with the host themselves. Do you think this problem is fixable?

The avatars are being created with the format you specify: “2be8xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx-bpfull.jpg” and “2be8xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx-bpthumb.jpg”, however, in trying to download/view them, something seems off. Their sizes are 6K and 2K which seem too small, and I’m having a problem downloading them via FTP, even though they have adequate permissions. Perhaps the images are being created, but not correctly?

Our host does have gd enabled (v 2.0.34), and our WP/BP versions are: 3.4.2/1.6.1

Hi @nhoullet, all, the script is not meant to work on all mobile platforms since it uses a pixel to calculate the height of the window. Also, remember that the script posted is only the “alpha version” and I plan to make a plugin with the latest code refactoring and all. I will let you know when I have it finished. BTW, the opera issue is surely related to CSS (style/design) are you using the latest version? thanks all

Thanks @mercime for the information. I see where it states: “Multiple WP networks can be created with either: WP Multi Network or Networks+” but since I just created Multisite with the config.php file, I didn’t think I needed an outdated or premium plugin. The information found to support the plugin is a bit confusing. I will check out your link.

Any thoughts on the Network+ Plugin? It sounds awesome to create arrays within arrays but I am just practicing on a small shared host. Would that work for low-to-no traffic practice sites?

i am unable to reply to @mercime question – when i reply my browser goes white and stays – have used chrome, ie and mozilla – alll the same – answer to question is i am using BP default theme –

@boonebgorges @djpaul In that case, any other ideas or plans for hierarchical groups, the way there are hierarchical pages in WordPress?

@mercime thank you very much for your help. I was actually running WP in two instances but it sounds like I will need to create a multisite network if I want to get this thing to work properly. I found the instructions for setting up multisite but I have a question about how to proceed. Since I already have WP installed on my sub-domain do I need to uninstall it on the sub-domain first? If so does that just mean that I will delete the folder that was created with the name of the sub-domain in the public_html folder?
