Will your mention of @wpmuguru send them a notification?
Yes it does
The meta key is sitewide_tags_blog and it contains an array. However if you want to disable SWT on a single blog / site I have a post here: http://wpmututorials.com/plugins/turn-off-sitewide-tags-on-special-blogs/
WP/BP versions? Change to bp-default theme to check if it’s an issue with your custom theme. If that’s not the case, then deactivate plugins except BuddyPress to check if it’s a plugin conflict.
Well if it doesnt pull two url’s on a standard wordpress site and then it pulls two with a buddypress site I have to think it’s a buddypress question no?
Thanks, I really do appreciate you taking the time. I wish I could do more of this type of thing for myself, but I’m afraid that I don’t have the luxury of just sitting and straight learning PHP.
Searched the file for both get_sitemeta and update_sitemeta and got no hits. Will your mention of @wpmuguru send them a notification? Because I don’t think BP is letting me post anything to anyone’s wall right now.
Oops – make that update_site_option and get_site_option. Might be worth pinging @wpmuguru about this as well.
Yep, you can do this just fine, and won’t loose any data. I suggest you set up a test site and have a go before you do it on your live site
What version of BuddyPress are you using?
to reiterate what @VirtualityStudio said, ” people are so used to the way fb works, it would be nice to do that for them “
here here !!!
Don’t get me wrong, BP/WP is a great platform, and we don’t really need millions of fb clones, but the functionality of fb’s activity feeds must surely be an ‘industry standard’ that most sites strive for nowadays.
Buddypress in my opinion was created not only to provide us with the tools to create our own social networks, but also to strive to be more than just a ‘blog orientated’ social engine.
Unfortunately the structure for having the ‘site-wide’ feed pulling in profile feed posts may prove to be counter productive in the long run unless more emphasis is placed on the way these items are controlled. Otherwise everyones personal conversations are the but of all gossip for all and sundry to see, a bit like washing your laundry in public lol
Privacy control too in my humble opinion is ‘up there’ in the priorities list of BP enhancement, I admire the work that contributors have put into some of the plugins in the past but they cannot be relied on to keep up BP updates and really need to become a BP standard protocol no? anyway thats another subject
Anyone?
Hi mercime
Thanks for your helpful reply. I changed Forums base to sitewide-forums & now I have a new forum eg
http://richard-dickinson.com/sitewide-forums/forum/rhdwponlinetwist_forum-4-netnewbies/
I am still though finding it hard to understand & use BP on my site! Hopefully with time I will learn how to use it properly.
Shouldn’t this forum I have created eg rhdwponlinetwist_forum-4-netnewbies show on the top BP admin bar (my username) forums link? Clicking on that Forums link brings me to …../admin/forums page & there is no forum shown there on the forums tab? I am a little confused at the moment with BP on my site-how can I learn to use BP properly on my site?
This isn’t really a BuddyPress question, is it? FB customisation is all about the opengraph tags that you built. I can’t even look at what you’ve done because you haven’t linked to your site
@boonebgorges Hello, I am working with a user on our theme forum with this same issue. I have replicated it, my support user informs me that this started to happen when he update Java, as in Sun Java…not sure how this relates to javascript if it does but may be a way for you to replicate this issue. What I am finding is that the read more link does not populate itself so it just stays as […]
I am not sure what exchanges the […] with Read More but I think that is what is broken. I would be happy to help you to replicate this issue. Let me know what I can do to help you troubleshoot this issue.
Thanks!
thank for the tip @etivite . I have searched and googled till my head was spinning, there is NO solution for it yet!
The issue is asked again and again and again, and still no real solution. The only thing I have found which filters out the non-friend activity but also blocks your own! is this one:
As for th bp_has_activities you can’t really use it as it only accepts ONE single parameter (for ex.
if ( bp_has_activities( ‘scope=friends’) [which means own posts, groups, etc will be out!] and as you said is completely messing up the “load” function by the occasion. So you definitely can NOT call that a solution.
You say it has been covered before, I’d rather say it has been asked again and again but when you search through all those posts you’ll see they all end either unanswered or after people desperately try to figure it out somehow, gets abandoned as no one found the way to solve it. ANd there was not even ONE single post from some of the developers who know best how buddypress is built.
We can try and try and break our heads, but if after 2 years none of us managed 2 find a solution, isn’t it time for a specialist to look into it?
We need just as on other social networks the possibility to have own posts (incl comments) combined with friends’ posts (also incl. commenst) on one single page/wall and only visible for friends.
All social networks do that these days, only buddypress not ….
Looks like you have not completed Step 3 of the BP Compatibility process – https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/wordpress-to-buddypress-theme/#tplfiles
In your case, you have to use the first method – i.e. changing 16 BP template files – to fix alignments and spacing – per your questions #1 and #2 above.
Download the 6 BP folders transferred to your Memo theme folder in server down to your computer hard drive. Starting from activity/index.php, open this file and make the following changes:
At the very top of the file, replace:
`
with [UPDATED replaced hentry-content with entry-content]
`
at the very bottom of the activity/index.php file, replace
`
`
with
`
`
Save file and continue with replace the same with the remaining 15 files.
For registration.php, replace the bottom area
`
jQuery(document).ready( function() {
if ( jQuery(‘div#blog-details’).length && !jQuery(‘div#blog-details’).hasClass(‘show’) )
jQuery(‘div#blog-details’).toggle();
jQuery( ‘input#signup_with_blog’ ).click( function() {
jQuery(‘div#blog-details’).fadeOut().toggle();
});
});
`
with [Updated this whole block]
`
jQuery(document).ready( function() {
if ( jQuery(‘div#blog-details’).length && !jQuery(‘div#blog-details’).hasClass(‘show’) )
jQuery(‘div#blog-details’).toggle();
jQuery( ‘input#signup_with_blog’ ).click( function() {
jQuery(‘div#blog-details’).fadeOut().toggle();
});
});
`
Save and upload folders to theme folder
NEVERMIND – For those who run into this issue, just do the following:
Just delete the page you are using for the Groups Page, add a new page, link it to the Groups Directory in the BuddyPress options, and it fixes it. Seems somewhat self explanatory but this issue was unresolved in a few topics.
The wording needs to be changed, or activation needs to happen after step 4. This is a major oversight, right from installation. I hope my users dont encounter such problems after I build my website. Clean design though. My second impressions of it are positive.
Group forums allow forum discussions to be group-specific. Is that too vapid an answer?
Groups are more than just forums. They allow other kinds of collaboration. Take http://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/digital-humanities-initiative/ for example. In addition to forums, they have an Announcement space, a shared Files upload space, a shared blog.
As I suggested above, if you find a given feature “confusing and all over the place”, you should shut that feature off. Not everyone needs every feature turned on, and not every feature makes sense for every application.
Thanks. What about using groups and forums together? What’s the point of that?
So you go to a group and see a bunch of status updates, then you see a button for the forum which goes to a bunch of forum posts. All are presumably under the same overall topic. It just seems so confusing and all over the place.
i can offer a bit more information here, and i’m impressed that buddypress has kept this thread alive. it’s clear that this thread has a lot of value for the survival of bp in it, and it’s also clear, at least to me, that there are a good number of caring people trying, essentially, to help bp “survive.”
if you download free software, does that make you a beggar?
if you get a 2nd muffin free at a coffee shop, how would you feel if the shopkeeper said “beggars can’t be choosers” and just gave you a second muffin with a bite already taken out of it? then said: hey man, if you don’t like it, bake your own, no one forcing you to eat your free muffin you know.
what we’ve bought into, and what bp has “sold” to us, is: “social networking in a box.” we, as a culture, have experienced how awesome it is when people get together and work for the common good. we see your slogans “all the features you love in 6 minutes flat,” and we go “rock on!” power to the people, way to go buddypress! it’s the information revolution waaahooo!
it’s a big promise bp is making, and i’d like to know if you really look at downloaders of bp as “beggars.” do you really?
many “buy into” the bp promise and are more than willing to help in any way they know how, as long as they get help with the parts that they don’t know how to do.
that one is pretty critical: many are more than willing to help in any way they know how, as long as they get help with what they don’t know how to do.
for example: i paid for my artistic education as a documentation and training professional and an “end user advocate” (which you can tell eh?).
as a result, i have documented extremely complex software, have dug deep into code, have consulted on code commenting procedures — and i’ve also put together guides for non-english speaking factory workers to put together electronics (so basically a picture-based guide).
so, here i am, and basically, with 20 years off and on hard-core tech documentation experience, i can say: i can dern near explain anything to anyone in a clear and understandable way. but, in order to do so, i need something called a “subject matter expert.”
and that, in this situation, would be “you guys.”
i have repeated multiple times: i am happy to document, but i need to be shown.
the benefit to me: functioning websites. the benefit to you: great documentation. what you give me: code, procedures, and a consistently functional and kind environment in which to receive answers to my questions (which will likely all be about functionality).
the benefit to the community: more and more people install bp and can actually use it.
the “BuddyPress Story” web-wide has been “i had high hopes and spent sleepless nights because i wanted to create a site for [passionX, missionY, businessZ, businessIdeaN] and basically, eventually, i gave up.”
the failing that i see here on the part of buddypress is:
not giving its community access to the “parts of the puzzle” that individuals don’t know how to do in exchange for the parts of the puzzle they do know how to do.
do you honestly find it appropriate to call someone who downloads free software a “beggar?”
what criteria must a person fill in order not to be a “beggar” in the bp community?
that’s all i can contribute for today.
it has been covered before – you’ll need to filter on bp_has_activities (search the forum on this term and you’ll find some examples) and then loop over the array and unset which activities do not meet your requirement. not ideal and may mess up ‘load more/pagination’
Anyone?!?! Is there really no buddypress guru out there able to answer this question after being around for soon 2 years ?!?!?!
Thank you!
Ah. Looks like your permalinks use index.php as a prefix. I don’t think BuddyPress works well with those. I don’t know if anyone has a workaround for this particular issue until we fix it in BuddyPress.
Are you sure that didnt work? Because they both work my end [though method on is not a good idea unless you want to disable them completely that class is used in a few places] Are you modifying the default theme files or using a child theme?
