I’d say it’s usually not linking to the javascript files when things stop working. Another area would be not updating to BuddyPress 1.5 your theme files but using BuddyPress 1.5. Have you updated those both?

To be honest just put in the theme files probably is the lightest / speediest solution. Google lets you know where in the code to place things – put that in the footer.php before the closing tags it says.

But, if you are using the default theme for BuddyPress you probably either want to do a child or you want to use a plugin.

I’ve not tried it but perhaps: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/google-analytics-for-wordpress/ works – after all if it’s just inserting into the theme files….

Me too!! As I am unfamiliar with BuddyPress I don’t know what I have missed if anything, but I too wanted sitewide forums. Went through the BB-forum install. Now it tells me the forum isn’t installed and also there was a conflict with BP forums page being called forum and also bb-forum page being called forum. I changed one of the pages names – but there shouldn’t be two should there?

BuddyPress Private Community is in the Fail list here https://codex.buddypress.org/releases/1-5-plugin-compatibility/, however the error listed in this table seems to be for another plugin.

When I install Private Community, it does create a php error, but I found this error is not created by the plugin, but by a BuddyPress bug described here: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/plugin-buddypress-private-community-when-clicking-on-a-protected-page-i-get-error.

I have made the fixes described for this bug, and Private Community now seems to be working, although I am still testing.

Depends on what your needs are. If you need a social network for your particular niche/interest, then BuddyPress is your best bet. If you just need a little spot for group chatting about something, then create a Facebook Group.

BuddyPress isn’t “just a plugin,” though. It’s a whole suit of plugins built into one. And similarly to what @Modemlooper said, if you don’t need to own or control your data, then BuddyPress might be overkill. And if you intend on creating another Facebook, just give up now lol. Unless you have tens of millions of dollars, you won’t stand a chance. Niche is the way to go.

Yes, I’ve noticed this too. They aren’t blurry in the person’s or group’s avatar, but they are blurry when they are added to a status update. For instance, the group avatar when I post in a group is fine but then it is included in the status update and there it is blurry.

I’ve added extended fields per buddypress’s capabilities; however, they don’t show up in my registration process….any idea why not and what I need to do about it:

Yes. This means that Custom Community Theme needs to be upgraded. And the good news is that the theme devs have submitted their updated version compatible with BP 1.5 to the WordPress Theme repo. Probably will be updated after undergoing theme review by end of next week latest.

If you enable multi site in WordPress you can install BuddyPress on a secondary blog.

Just so we can be on the same page.. are you using a child theme you created or are you using an already created one? Is it a child theme of the default theme?

Have you made sure in the style.css of the child there is the following:


Template: bp-default


This assumes that the child is the default theme, if not that bp-default should be the name of the parent theme.

Disable the custom header functionality on the default BuddyPress theme:
