In reply to: Buddypress login by facebook, twitter etc

MemberGuys, by any chance would you know why neither WP FB auttoconnect, BC-Oauth, or any other twitter or facebook login plugin i try shows in the Buddypress login-box of my website?
http://www.lacotufa.com
It does works in the WP login menu.
Is the theme? Is there something i can add or modify so it appear? thanks!April 16, 2011 at 1:29 pm #110404In reply to: Has anyone actually gotten BP to work ok?
Paul Wong-Gibbs
KeymasterThis topic is pretty rude. Of course people have gotten BuddyPress to run “ok.” You’ve made a couple of posts on this site since joining, and they both seem to be about your dissatisfaction with the default theme. As @hnla says, most sites will want to customise the theme. The BP-Default theme lets you create child themes of it, so you can very easily and quickly put your customisations in place whilst maintaining functionality.
The third-party market for themes (free or premium) is limited, but that’s mainly because BuddyPress is a pretty new project as far as software goes. One of my favourite theme providers for BuddyPress at the moment is StudioPress; they sell a plugin called GenesisConnect which adds BuddyPress compatibility to a lot of Genesis themes — http://www.studiopress.com/plugins/genesis-connect
I’m closing this thread as it’s not very constructive; if you are really asking “where can I find BuddyPress themes”, search the forums or post a new thread asking constructively, and I’m sure people like @pcwriter will come along and share what they’ve found. If you’d like information about Pligg, I’d try their website or forums. When asking on a BuddyPress forum about Pligg, you’re only ever going to get any meaningful feedback from people who have recently used both BuddyPress and Pligg, and I’m willing to bet that’s a pretty small cross-section of users on this site.

Member@mercime. Thanks so much for your prompt response.
1. Is there a way I can add the create group link from inside a members profile?
2. I see the add friend link. I had to test with more than one user logged in to see it. Thanks so much!
3. I will Deactivate template pack plugin and see what happensApril 16, 2011 at 1:02 pm #110401In reply to: Groups to join group category?

KeymasterNot in core. Someone has written a plugin, https://buddypress.org/community/groups/bp-group-hierarchy/, but I haven’t used it myself so can’t vouch for compatibility.

KeymasterI’m going to close this thread as it is over a year old, and the title refers to the 1.1.2 release of BuddyPress. It’s not relevant to have a discussion about modern versions of BuddyPress in a topic for such an old version. Please create a new thread.

MemberHello,
If mysql 5.5.x was used and the problem occurred in bbpress forum installed within buddypress,
1) delete buddypress.
2) It might be useful to check if the tables for bbpress were deleted. Check also there is no bb-config.php in the web root folder.
3) reinstall buddypress
4) change ‘TYPE = MYISAM’ to ‘ENGINE = MYISAM’ in /wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-forums/bbpress/bb-admin/includes/defaults.bb-schema.php before creating groups and using forums.
5) create groups and test forums.April 16, 2011 at 11:21 am #110394In reply to: Hmm, does anyone know how to get this view?

Participantwe run memchahce and eaccelrator, and w3tc and , though we are in dev, it seems to work ok.
Then initial get takes ages (lots of plugins, and not sure which are the worst), and so I have a cron that runs every minute that gets the /forums/ page. I THINK this helps, as I assume it would be caching stuff so any user hitting the page will always get some cached objects etc…
At least that’s my theory.

ParticipantSarcasm ? “sorry if I am messing up your cute little system here“
Just to emphasise what mercime has already covered this is a voluntary support forum this is an OS project if people choose to use the app then that is their choice there is absolutely no obligation on the part of anyone to provide support or help, yet an amazing amount of help is given to newbies trying to get sites up and running and often by people working professionally in this industry so it pays not to upset them or put them off offering that help.
A useful reference on how to post in general to boards is covered here:
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.htmland no this isn’t an attempt to condescend or patronise.
There IS NO generic problem with BP but it’s a complicated extension to WP and thus there are many issues that can arise, often these might manifest in a similar way but more often than not have a variety of actual causes, which is why detail on the issue is imperative in order to be able to help.

ParticipantDigging deeper, the problem is Memcached. Has anyone been able to get object caching like memcached or xcache to work with Buddypress?

ParticipantBP is not really an out of the box solution to create a successful community in functionality and look you have to put some work in, there are some grat examples of what can be done but they have had time spent on them and require a certain amount of skills with PHP and frontend coding CSS ? HTML.
Not sure what you really mean by a consistent website? bp-default isn’t a bad theme at all for an ‘out of the box’ better than most I’ve experienced but even with that theme you are meant to take it and make it your own.
What are these ‘Sample sites’ you refer to?
April 16, 2011 at 7:31 am #110385In reply to: Installing buddypress in subsite in WP multisite
@mercime
ParticipantFirst thing’s first, if you want to have user-blog-URL’s as http://myname.mysite.com/ then you have to install BuddyPress in domain root http://mysite.com/ Otherwise, if you install BP in secondary site with a subdomain configuration, e.g. http://buddypress.mysite.com/, the glitch is that the user blogs created from the secondary site will turn out like http://myname.buddypress.mysite.com/
Reported here: https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/1796== 4. but when i do that , the links etc starts showing in the main site ==
Unless you put in code or widget for sitewide recent posts or for list of all blogs, then those links won’t show up in the home page of your main site.== i only wants users to see once the login to community ==
Read through to the end of this related topic with solutions for the https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/how-to-make-a-private-community?topic_page=1&num=15April 16, 2011 at 5:32 am #110383In reply to: Blank page after install Buddypress 1.1.2

Participant@krikette Know that 99.9% of those who help out here are volunteers who share their knowledge and skills whenever they can. There’s no obligation for anyone here to answer any question, yet many have generously guided newbies to site launch. There might be those who are arrogant, yet you’ll also find those who are very helpful, so kindly refrain from painting everyone with the same brush. The traffic of helpful volunteers is less than the traffic of newbies or those seeking help, so you can see the imbalance. You have to be patient yet persistent

== but it is obvious that there is a major problem with buddypress SOMEWHERE and no one is doing a damn thing to figure it out. ==
Unless you post what problem you’re having with your installation, no one can help you. I see that this is your fist post, and you are venting because … of unanswered questions by others before you? Many have successfully launched BuddyPress sites like those featured at http://www.bpinspire.com/ and your site could be featured there too if you think positively and learn what needs to be done to overcome the challenges that face you.
Some tips:
1. Read – https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/before-installing/
BP Codex is your friend https://codex.buddypress.org/home/
2. Use our site search or use Google search as the question could have already been answered in forums or in external sites.
3. Bumping topics frequently is a no-no. You can bump your topic if unanswered after 24 hours.April 16, 2011 at 4:58 am #110382In reply to: Hmm, does anyone know how to get this view?

ParticipantThat’s a screenshot of the old bp-sn-parent theme that came bundled with the 1.1 releases of Buddypress. Way outdated. But you can recreate that look if you want to try your hand at making your own theme

ParticipantTry asking your host to increase your wordpress memory limit, or do a search on that subject as there are some ways to do it yourself…
If neither of those work, and for some shared server hosts such as 1and1 they won’t, then have a look at the suggestions here and here.
Or find a host that offers more memory – which is difficult as all other shared hosting services, that I’ve found, don’t quote the memory available in their advertising….

MemberHello and sorry if I am messing up your cute little system here, but it is obvious that there is a major problem with buddypress SOMEWHERE and no one is doing a damn thing to figure it out.
We can post all our detailled information until we are blue in the face but it is clear that many people are having this problem on many different setup types and all I have seen anyone griping about posting questions “in the right format” do to those who have jumped through their hoops is ask people to fresh reinstall, clam up when people actually erase everything and start over with the same problem, and then accuse people who are actually TRYING to help of posting ‘bandaids’ to a problem no one you’re obviously disinclined to root out.
I’m not posting my information because I know it won’t make a damn, but I did want to post my $.02 in hopes that maybe it will motivate you to actually help all the people who are trying to tell you there is a problem.
It’s free, I get it, and I’m okay with that. It works for me but not on a client’s server. That sucks. What sucks more is that these people who actually went out of their way to get help and help others are being condescended. Bravo.

Participant@r-a-y thanks…I thought I could squeeze it in here at these forums, since I’m pulling in BP Profile components into the author.php template. These BP elements are what I can not get to show when there are no post existing for that user.
like i said, everything works fine when a post exist by the member.
for example, this is how I have the layout in the author.php on all my subsites, sidebar-left holds BP Avatar and Xprofile info, in the middle column contains the author posts loop, and in the sidebar-right I have BP Activity latest posts by author and BP activity latest comments by author.

KeymasterThat works too, though I’m not sure how safe it is to use the $bp_unfiltered_uri global in future BP versions like 1.3.
Here’s the “login_redirect” filter method if interested (found the URL):

KeymasterHmm… this is an interesting idea.
I would propose maybe building a group extension plugin that asks the super admin when the group should be closed.
If the group is closed, remove access to the activity entry form and the group forum form. Off the top of my head, not sure if there are any filters to disable the forms, might need to modify the group templates to do this. Could also remove the group join buttons as well.

KeymasterFYI, the bp.org theme will never be publicly released.
The frontpage is just made up of a few floating divs and a little bit of positioning for the labels.

Member@Paul Gibbs In other words, a new user who registers cannot see any of the added BuddyPress functions. To any new users it apears as if BP was never installed. This wasn’t the case before I installed multi-user.
